I burned 2-15 packs of Maxell disks and 1-15 pack of TDK at 4x without a single bad burn. With these Memorex, I've made two coasters from the first four out of the box. The burn ended sucessfully, but the disks were not able to be read. The only good burns I have had have both been at 2.4x. Cheap disks for a not-so-cheap price. I will stick with Maxell and TDK.

More trash from CMC. Burns fine until last 20% of capacity when the media cannot handle a proper burn. Pixels, freezing, and the usual problems result with last 10 minutes or so of video capacity. Remarkably, the DVD+R CMC from TDK does work okay, so it's very clear CMC uses different standards for each of its manufacturers.
For Memorex, the standard seems to be "screw you."
Cake box purchased at Staples, 4/30/04. Has purple colored label, foam ring, half-sized card with UPC, plus disc-sized white card insert warning about earlier burners and firmware upgrades.
Staples will cheerfully accept returns of media.

I've had great success with Memorex. Both using the -R media with Nero 6 Ultra and DVD X Copy, and the +R media with Nero Vision Express 2 and DVD Shrink. My NEC 2500A is new and my first DVD burner. I've burned 17 Memorex blanks with no coasters. The only issue I've had was with one disc burned with Nero Vision Express 2. It plays fine in any computers I've tried it in, but 2/3 of the way through stutters and pixilates in both a Panasonic and Samsung stand-alone DVD player. It's the only disc I've burned in the LP extended mode (180 minutes) so I think that mode may have been the issue. I really can't complain. Bought on sale for $1.50\disc. Usually $2 per here in Canada.

Memorex has recently upgraded their DVD media to work better with higher speed burners. Lower speed burners need a firmware (driver) upgrade. I have found not all burners have firmware upgrades such as Dell's 4x Hitachi LG GSA 4040N. Now I'm stuck with a spindle of DVDs that will not work.

Bought Memorex 4x DVD+R - worked great - so I bought 2 more packs of 25. But - the media is different! The original ones were RICOHJPN-R01 which worked fine - but these suck with my recorder every disk (12) hanging during playback on APEX-1500, Polaroid DVP-1000, Initial IDM-9539 and Dell laptop. They burn clean - but always hang after 45 minutes + on playback - even on the EMPREX 4020 (BTC 1004) burner that made the DVDs.

most fail at lower rated speeds. and all fail 8x burning on my plextor 708a. for data they are fine for 4X burns anything slower or faster chunks. I usualy burn at 2.4X for movies cause of data reliability, but most if not all the time these discs fail verification in nero. I see ricoh listed as memorex product but out of all the chances I took with multiple types of packageing (5 10 15 25 and 50 pacs) NONE have I ever seen are ricoh. I recomend everyone to stay away from cmc or mcc discs. Maybe the companys will start useing QUALITY manufacturers like RIOCH.

My Player APEX 1500 is not 100% compatible with DVD+R media, has to try a few times before it see the disc once once saw, it'll play the disc perfect.

This is the 50-spindle pack with the Purple Label... on sale for $50 (for 50 discs). Top of blank DVD is silver and the bottom is purple. DVD Ripped for backup of FULL original DVDs, compressed most of the time. Used DVD Shrink to ENCODE & BURN TO HD... then used DVD Decryptor to BURN to the blank DVD. I burned ONLY at 2x speed because I like to make sure that my back-up movies are in the BEST possible quiality. So far I've burned/backed-up about 25 movies and NO coasters... all very good-excellent quality. Aside from the compression loss in quality (the more you compress, the more quality I seemed to lose), I never had a problem with the blank DVDs themselves. I burned it with my HP-400i (max is 8x, but never took it up that high... did 1 in 4x speed, came out fine). Worked in my Toshiba SD-4900, but also in 4 other DVD players (2 lesser model Toshiba's, 1 Sony & 1 eMachines DVD-Rom player - NO PROBLEMS!). I recommend it!

These are the Memorex DVD+R 4X discs with the purple label on the package. Memorex (like Fuji) uses the same labeling for single discs and 5-Pack boxes. The single discs and 5-packs are top-grade 4X Ricoh discs.
Unfortunately, the 25 spindles are NOT Ricoh's like I had expected but these unpredictable, inferior quality CMC Mag discs. Fuji uses the same marketing trick with their discs and labels: single discs and 5-packs are 4X Taiyo Yudens but 25 spindles are 2X Ritek's. It's the 2nd time that I am misled into buying something other than I thought.
It's really outrageous that manufacturers can so casually screw consumers this way. There should be a law forcing DVD recordable manufacturers/distributors to clearly print the Media ID code of their discs on the packaging.
To follow up on shayne's comments below:
I have made I coaster so far. It burned fine @4X but the disc was garbled during playback at the very end. The disc itself had several large dye deposition defect at the outer edges. The next one in the pile of discs also had severe dye defects and I simply thew it away... no sense in even trying to burn it.
The 3rd one I examined carefully for faults and it looked ok. It burned and played fine.
Conclusion:
Discs which have no visible dye defects will burn and play fine @4X. But you have to visually inspect them carefully before burning and I predict that many discs in the pile will NOT be good.

Plenty of bad burns with unreadable sectors in middle or end of disc when burned at 4X on Pioneer A06.
Almost all of these CMC ones burn ok at 2.4X.
RICHOHJPN Memorex discs burn fine for me at 4X.

Have Burned 15 with no coasters.
I suggest getting the Memorex 4xDVD+R (RICOHJPNR01)
because they will burn at 8x in my Liteon LDW-811s
Disc's have played fine in my Apex AD500w, Apex AD1225, & Philips FW-D5 / 37
The DVD's came in a pack of five(5) in actual DVD case holders.

Well, there exists one small flaw:
Burning this media @ 2.4x results in a very clean burn, however burning this media @ 4x does not result in such a clean burn.
The effectiveness of the burning process was tested with Nero CD-DVD Speed. The graph created with the 2.4x burned disc was very smooth. The graph created with the 4x burned disc was not as smooth and dipped near the end of the disc.
Conclusion: Good media, but only burn @ 2.4x for perfect burns.

Bought a 25 pack spindle of these on Amazon.com hoping that they'd be Ritek G04's, but they weren't. I have only burned a couple, but they seem to be decent discs when used with my NEC 1300a. They seem to be very similar in quality to the 2.4x CMC MAG R01 discs I've used. Nero DVD Speed shows no read errors, and the speed graph shows a couple of small dips. These do seem better than the Optodisc 4x discs I'm using, which have burned very poorly on my system - borderline coasters at 4x, many serious dips at 2x.
