I have owned a nec nd - 1100a for over a year now, recieved a few miss callibration problems now and then, but that wont my dvd's coasters. I have used Maxell +r and Memorex +r buth have worked great. No name brands I only have experimented with one and i couldnt even get my drive reconize it. All in all i am happy with my drive, untill it dies.
Oh, I use DVD-xcopy and DVDShrink with Nero on encripted Dvds.

Have had no problems with this drive. If it does not write on certain media at 4x it does at 2.4x. Very reliable drive. Have used Verbatim media, Memorex, Ritek, HP and many other no name brands like Vakoss and Centrios.

Had great results so far with Verbatim DataLifePlus 2.4x and Phillips 1-4x media! Mixed results with Memorex 4x DVD+R/+RW.

Advantages: cheap and cheerful; Disadvantages: may not be compatible with all media.

No h/w problems.

Didn't work for me. CD burning jammed whole drive (needed hard reset). DVD burning did many writing failures and most of the disc was unreadable. I changed the machine to a new one 2 timed. All of the 3 drives had the same problems.

I had this burner for over 6months now. Bought it from NewEgg for $140 back then. Very impressed. Burned over 100+ DVD+R and no cosater using Nero, DVDecryptor, CloneDVD. I recently updated with hacked 1300 firmware and now it burns DVD-R! So far I've tried TDK 2X DVD-R and Princo 1X el cheapo dvd-r working great. On Princo media, it burns at 2X and when scanned with DVDINFOPRO I get error towards the end. However when played on Pioneer DV-260, it plays fine without any skipping and pixilation. So I'm very happy. This burner will last me until dual layer dvd burner comes out till it dies :)

bought oem from ebuyer uk for about £60 in november.
great drive but problems finding 4x +r's that actually burn at 4x.
tried mirror 4x & bulkpaq gen 4 4x but they will only burn at 2.4x - eventually found datasafe media 4x & they do burn at 4x (4.3 gb movie file from hdd in 14 mins).
so if anybody knows of any other +r media that burns at 4x on this burner please post comment.
and if you say this burner burns great please give us details - media used and time taken to burn etc

Hi,
I like the NEC-1100A (in Germany it is the 1090A).
I have no problems to play the DVD's on my DVD-player.
But I have a problem to write 800 MB CD's with it.
I tried it with Roxio 5 and Pinnacle Instand CD/DVD 8.

Can you tell me aht I have to do for it.
I mark the disk in Instant CD/DVD as a 90 Min-CD but it doesn't work.

Thanks
NAP_PAM

mediatip for german users:
use Sky DVD+R (RICOHJPNR00). You can buy them at `Pennymarkt´ its very cheap (1.99€) and very good.

I bought this drive 3 days ago for €79 in bulk on a computerfare and I just love it. I bought a pack of maxell dvd+r's and sentinel dvd+r's and they all work great. Backupped xobxgames work flawlessly, movies play very good in my xbox and in my cheapass lifetec dvd-player. I just wished I bought this drive before because I didn't know what I was missing.

Using Sony DVD+R's [5DPR120N2] seems to work fine in DVD-players
Not in my Sony DAV-S300 home-cinema-crap - It's the cinema-set
that sucks - Reads Philips DVD+R in a few tries - Philips DVD+RW
seems perfect [in 1!! try]
Good burner using CloneDVD - Nero all coasters
(Coasters = unreadable in DVD-players ;)

Picked up this drive for about $110 after rebates this summer, and have been very pleased with it. I'm using Memorex and TDK media, and all the burns (25+) have been fine in my HTPC and my friend's cheapo RCA standalone player. Can't beat the price for this kind of reliability! All my burns are with DVD Shrink or DVD2DVD-R/CCE/Scenarist/Nero.

Received my Dell 8250 with the NEC 1100A. I have burned about 4 disks so far with Vertabim +RW and +R media and they all seem to burn fine so far. although my standalone DVD player (sony 700p) ONLY reads the +rw disks, but can't read the +R disks.

Sorry everyone. Seems I was a little premature in stating that 'the drive does well with all types of media even the cheap stuff'. The cheap stuff I was referring to was CompUSA DVD+R. Don't waste your money or be tempted by the low price. Every DVD movie I burned using this media ended up in the garbage. One played all the way through, but when I tried to re-play it, it had problems.

However, the media I have been 100% sucessful with so far is Philips DVD+RW. I'm going to try another brand based on what I've read here and I'll post more comments when I know.

Further, I stated in my last comment that I've been using DVD X-COPY as my way of backing up my DVD movies. I've come up with a little trick to keep this program from messing up during the burning process...

Allow DVD X-COPY to rip the DVD to your hard drive in a temp folder of your choice. Before the burning process, start NERO BURNING ROM and place all the files (not the folder itself) that DVD X-COPY places on your hard drive into the TS_VIDEO folder of NERO and use NERO to burn the DVD. I've done it this way four times and so far I've not had a single problem playing them back on my DVD player.

Although this may seem like a hassle at first, it's way less of a hassle than burning again because DVD X-COPY encounters a problem. DVD X-COPY is pretty good, but I have encountered problems where it does not split the DVD original properly.

Updates to follow.

Unit works really well with all CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW media that I've tried (even the cheap stuff).

MUSTS!

Make sure the DMA setting in Windows System Manager is set to 'ON' or else you'll be burning rearview mirror ornaments.

If you're using DVD X-COPY go into 'Advanced Settings' and activate 'External Burning NERO Engine' and click the 'UDF Compatiblity setting'. You'll need NERO BURNING ROM installed on your computer to do this so be prepared to spring for it if you want DVD X-COPY to work right.

I've had NO hardware trouble, just software related so I can give the unit a 10.

Lastly, I've got mine installed as a master on my secondary EIDE connector with a 10 giga-byte hard drive set as a slave. If you got yours connected as a SLAVE and are having trouble, try switching it to the MASTER position.

I got this drive branded as I/O Magic. $199 with a $30 rebate at Micro Center. It came with one no-name +R disk and Pinnacle software. So far I have made no coasters and have gone through a spindle of 30 Verbatim +R disks. I use DVDShrik or DVD2One for copying nad Nero for Burning. +RW disks are another story. They usually fail when burning in Nero and the ones that do manage to complete cannot be read by my standalone DVD players. They do work in the NEC drive and in my LiteOn DVD-ROM.

Johan,

thanks for your reply, prooving that at least one person had the patience to dig through all my rantings ;-) . In the meantime (actually just two hours ago), a friend of mine who's a frequent poster to dvdboard.de told me that they have recently had a discussion about the flakes I mentioned with this particular drive, too, and that somebody said that NEC used _several_ different boards for their ND-1100s (he mentioned a SONY notebook - probably a VAIO - in that context, but from what I've understood, this wasn't the only scenario where they did it, but rather was part of the reason _why_ they did).

Can't say I even understood half of what this guy referred to, and so far didn't have the time nor the motivation (being a proud Pioneer user now, hehe...) to check out the respective board and search for these messages. Tried it, but closed the browser again when I saw it required registration, for which I simply wasn't in the mood ;-) .

Still, it seems my thesis about the PCBs being the actual culprits has some substance: It ought to be the board. It couldn't have been the drive, after all, and it wasn't very likely that it was the firmware, either.

However, this, plus your (and other people's) positive experiences with this burner, only strengthens my point: It's a game of chance if you buy this thing, and seeing as NEC still keeps quiet about the whole issue, nobody knows the actual odds (I'm still sure that there are more "good" variants out there than flakey ones, though!). Hence, people, try the particular drive you want to take home with you _before_ you buy it. If you cannot, e. g. because you're preferring mail-ordering, rather stay away from it, or at least be prepared for the exchanged/refund blues...

I have no doubts, though, that _if_ you get a "healthy" drive, it will work okay. After all, my experiences with burning CDs were all very good, and the drive is extremely quiet (oh, and I forgot to mention: *cool*, unlike my new Pioneer, which gets damn hot!).

Have a nice weekend,
Chris.

Chris,

WOW what an aswer. I own my NEC 1100 for 2 months now (manuf. date: march 2003) and I have no problems with the one you mention. Of course I started testing with a +RW (HP en Thats Write, both RICOH). The first time, nero asked/said to format the disc. So I did, just a few seconds. After that I burnt and ereases them several times now.
I used data and movie. Totoly now probs.

Well I had problems with it: When I use nashua DVD+R (slim case), the disc becomes useless. Tried several players (standalone and in PC) but just shit. Movies will play a little time and then the player goes nuts and gives errors.

Flashed to 1.A1, but still the same errors. So no more Nashua for me. I am a little happy that I am not the only one with this problem. much do also.

But for me the NEC 1100 is great!!

Johan

"The most expensive write-once-media I ever used (DVD+RW and the NEC ND-1100"

Sadly, I cannot agree with those chaps praising this drive here. I wish I could, as it was you guys who actually made me order this drive ;-) .

I got my ND-1100 two weeks ago. Ordered it bundled with five Verbatim DVD+RWs (2.4 speed approved), which are what NEC officially suggests to be compatible media.

Well, in fact these blanks were compatible in that they could be written to. Right. The trouble started when I tried re-recording my first test burns by quick-erasing the first DVD+RW I used. Bang: Nero reports "SCSI target error" (don't let yourself be fooled with the term SCSI - that's not important, and many postings on the net deal with this already, so I don't want to go into the details). Uh, what the hell? Try "complete" erase: Same result. HRMPF!

Tried another DVD+RW blank. Same result again.

Used lots of different software, even tried the burner on a different, freshly installed system: Nothing improved. Tried different Primary/Secondary/Master/Slave combinations (including using the drive as the only one on that port) - same negative results.

Flashed the drive many times with different (even OEM) firmwares - nothing.

And so on...

Then I searched the net and found a thread in DELL's support forum (I'm not a DELL customer myself, and my computer isn't a DELL brand, either, so don't get any wrong ideas, please!), consisting of some friggin' *fourteen* screen pages (!) of user complaints who all had the same trouble as I had (DELL uses an OEM version of the ND-1100 in some of their drives): No answer from DELL, no statement from NEC, no solution, just some shots into the blue by the community ("Try a different firmware, use a drive that has been manufactured after [...] or before [...]" - all dreamers' bullshit, sorry...).

Finally, I called both my vendor and NEC, who both couldn't offer a solution except for an exchange. Ha! As if they could guarantee the next drive would work any better... Further, the NEC support guy told me that no firmware updates (in case the error _was_ due to a firmware bug, which is everything but granted, too) were planned for the near future. GREAT!

So, what was I to do? I sent the drive back to the shop where I've ordered it, and asked for a refund, after they told me they probably wouldn't have the time to check out any potential exchange drives before sending them back to me. Instead, I thought about getting the ND-1300 (dual standard) variant, hoping that it would use a different drive/board/firmware, so the problem may go away.

Funnily, during these days, the prices for many burners have again dropped significantly (at least here in Germany), so I read a couple more reviews on "dual standard" burners and thought about the SONY and the Pioneer alternatives before pushing my luck with yet another NEC produt. Finally stuck with Pioneer (DVR-106), although it's said to be based on the ND-1300 NEC drive as well.

That drive arrived yesterday. Installed it, fired up Nero, and everything worked as it was supposed to: No coasters, no "SCSI Target Errors", no nothing: Just plain, perfectly recorded discs. FINALLY! I think this answers all questions as of whether it may have had something to do with my particular system etc., eh?

But back to the NEC drive and to what I could say about it given the short time I had it, which admittedly isn't much, as I was mainly occupied browsing the web and phoning with support hotlines :-( :

First, it's a *very* quiet drive, which is nice. If you own a heavily and noisily cooled system like mine, you probably won't even hear it operate :-) . Then again, compared to the results of its "operation" (see above), any more noise than silence would have been inadequate, anyway ;-) .

Tray mechanism looks a bit cheap and fragile, though.

Further, it burnt my CDs (!) and CDRWs without any problems whatsoever, even the cheaper brands. CDRWs could also be erased again (something I don't consider self-sufficient anymore ;-) ...).

I have *not* tried burning standard DVD+Rs (non-rewritable), because what I experienced with the DVD+RWs already pissed me off too much, and I didn't want to risk any coasters. I'm sure, though, that they would be recorded well (haven't heard anything contrary, anyway).

The DVD+RWs I tried (two) did not work very well, though: My other drive _and_ the NEC (which was the one recording this crap in the first place, after all) had some difficulties actually _initializing_ the respective media. Software players like PowerDVD went back to their (not the DVD's mind you!) init screens after displaying the intro of an (unprotected)DVD-5 movie I copied as a test, WinDVD even crashed after trying to read the DVD for about half a minute on the NEC. "Impressive" is something very different from that, I think...

Some may argue now that I should have tried different media. That's true. Then again, I don't consider us the guinea pigs of the DVD industry, and while I can live with the fact that it's still a comparably new medium, and hence bound to cause compatibility trouble like the one many of us have experienced with the first affordable CD burners back then, at least the "officially recommended" media *should* work no matter what, shouldn't they? I mean, if even these blanks don't work correctly - hey, what media can be considered reliable ;-) ? Besides, if I recall correctly, both Verbatim and NEC belong to Mitsubishi. If that's true, I'd consider it highly embarassing if even these "brothers" don't get along with each other. Last not least, what good is it to buy "test sample packs" of DVD+R(W)s every week just to find out if some vendor has changed his distributor or, in case he produces the blanks himself, maybe changed the mixture, so the search for the compatible DVD+R(W) starts again? Nah, come on!

As for the errors I've encountered, it seems to me as if something in the finalization process of DVD+RWs goes wrong with this drive: This may explain why Nero (and other programs) hase difficulties actually detecting what's inside the drive and - once demanded - erasing it. Even the Pioneer I own since yesterday, couldn't quick-erase the formerly "NECtized" DVDs (bailed out with the same error message) until I finally told it to _completely_ erase the media (that option didn't work on the NEC, either), which it gracefully did. After that, quick-erasing, overwriting etc. was no problem anymore either. You see: It _can_ work out okay if you don't buy NEC ;-) ...

It must be said, though, that the flake I've encountered doesn't necessarily affect _all_ ND-1100s. Otherwise, all other people would complain as well (still, my vendor said I wasn't the first one returning the drive for the given reason). But even NEC is obviously unable to determine which drives are affected and which aren't. E. g. my drive has been manufactured in June 2003, and the DELL discussion mentioned above was held from February to April! Still, the error is obviously _not_ fixed yet. It seems, though, that it is the PCB, as - as shown above - it's not the firmware, and the drive itself is said to be used in many other drives sold by other parties who don't confront you with these problems.

Last not least: The reviews about this drive are usually quite good. After all, that was the reason why I bought it myself in the first place! But if you look a little closer, you may notice that most people writing about it only talk about writing to DVD+R, or "have recorded two DVD+RWs already". Recorded. Fine. As I said, _recording_ DVD+RWs wasn't that much of a problem in my (and the poor DELL owners') case, either. Erasing/overwriting was. And obviously, not many of these folks have tried this; at least their reviews don't explicitly mention it. Some may have done it and were lucky enough to own one of the "good" ND-1100s, but I guess most didn't before writing their reviews.

This being said, do yourself a favor and stay away from this drive unless

a) you're a hopeless gambler who thinks he'll be lucky enough to get a flawless version (which _does_ exist, of course!), and/or

b) you know exactly what you're buying (e. g. you know the vendor and have the rare opportunity to have him test the _concrete_ device you're buying with a DVD+RW before you take it home), and/or

c)unless it's really so dirt cheap that the price would justify virtually everything. Including the possibilitiy of having to abstain from using DVD+RWs.

I strongly discourage you to buy it via mailorder at the current price (150-170 EUR/USD), though. You certainly don't want to go through all these exchange/refund hassles you risk by doing so.

As for the Pioneer, thanks to the people in this forum to suggest it - it's a great drive, it seems. Maybe I'll write a more concise and hopefully more enthusiastic review about that one later when I've had the time to thoroughly test it.

Thanks for digging through this long rant, and happy burning,

Chris

Bought it separately in the bulk version (1.A0). Used it with Philips DVD+RW and with Philips DVD+R (2.4x and 4x) discs. Burned 25 discs sofar as DVD-data and as DVD-video and all succesfull. Not a single coaster or drop-out. My Pioneer 343 stand alone DVD-player plays my +RW and +R DVD-video without any problem.

One remark though: Where to find support (FW updates). There seems to be already 1.A1 FW but is this reliable and what are the improvements? Is this an official update of NEC and why is NEC not offering this on one of their (too many) web sites?

Anyone has more experience on this?

Came with my Dell 4550; have backed-up several DVDs using DVD XPRESS with Memorex +R media. No coasters so far.

It is a verry relyable recorder until now. I was afraid to buy one and the main purpose was:not to buy every year a new harddisk.
You here a lot of troubels around DVD writers so I was not so interested to buy one. I like to work with digital foto 's and movies so you harddisk is full and you need a lot of cdr's.
I have no problems to see the results on my Cyberhome 302 DVD player.
The results are tremendous. I waited to long I can say now.
I use Nashua DVD +r with this recorder and so for I made 8 copys with it. Every hit was succesfull but I needed un upgrade to Nero Burning 5.10.35 to burn DVD 's.
I practisized with a Nashua DVD +rw and got problems immidiatly.
My instict said to me the Nero I used was good.
I think when you need a burner buy a DVD burner instead of a CD Burner. You can make nice backups with it. You don 't have to close tge disk at once so you can use the DVD a long period.
Good luck with your choice. There are a lot of nice burners but when you are not sure this NEC was cheap enough to try.
I paid only 135 euro for the burner.

Anthony, try updating your burning software. Drive updates should be available from the software websites. Also, could someone please write a firmware that would allow the 1100A to be multi format. Yeah sure no problem.

After reading the comments about the NEC 1300a and the NEC 1100a being the same machine just a difference in software. I have been checking my software booklet that accompanied my NEC 1100a +r/w dvd writer. At the back of the book it in the Data section it compares like for like 3 dvd recorders from the nd 1000 to nd 1100.
The nd 1100 is highlighted in my booklet because that was the model i purchased. It quite clearly states that this recorder can read and write both -r/w and +r/w dvd disks and normal cd's. The other 2 examples can only write in the +r/w range.
given that this booklet is produced by NEC does this not constitute false advertisment of its product in stating that it can do something that it cannot, and that if this is the case then the goods purchased are not fit for the purpose that they were intended by the manufacturer. I feel that it is a legitamate arguement given the recent release of the nd 1300 and that NEC indeed intended to release the nd 1100 as a multi- format dvd given the fd - ic letter saying that both these units are electrically identical. I can only assume that NEC has held off in light of recent competition from other manufacturers in the field releasing multi write dvd recorders. But this has been at the detrement of the consumer who given a choice and the issues of both formats would rather go for a multi format machine due to many issues, again one of the most important being cost and with this in mind the media differences, others being compatability issues etc.
My comments are rather oblique because while i do not have a problem with the dvd itself. My point is really this if you go out and buy a car with three wheels and then they release one shortly after and you are better off buying one with four even though when you buy the one with 3 they tell you can put a fourth one on is this not a bit irish and suspiciously deceptive.
