Hi All

No problem at all with empty DL and +R, but it takes a looong time to read emprty -R DVDs.
Sometimes I have to eject and insert again the disc to "get it". Sometimes the recorded disc has errors.

After update to version 8....same problems still...
So +R wins....

performance degraded after 6 to 9 months

+RW burns barely readable using sony discs on sony stand alone player.

I have bought a lot of sony stuff. At least 50% of it I have been very unhappy with.

There customer service has been non-existent for me. For example, more than one email regarding different problems with different components sent in different years have gotten no response.

In fairness I have had a lot of the previously mentioned problems regarding media and having to write at 4X to prevent it creating coasters, however since visiting the 2 below Sony sites for acceptable media - http://www.sonydigital-link.com/osd/media/700/english/700.html
& Sony firmware upgrade (VY08WIN-E.zip) at - http://www.sonydigital-link.com/osd/osd.asp?l=en
I have been able to write at 8X with every single verbatim disk I have thrown at it, +R, -R!!

I cannot read or write Philips DVD+RW discs, even after upgrading my firmware to VY08. is anyone having the same problem?

Comments posted by Jos from Belgium, January 02, 2005. Rated this writer No rating.

Get this only if you do not mind buying top notch (expensive) media. Otherwise you are wasting your time. This burner does not like -R media either.

Tested with firmwares upto VY08 and even flashed to LiteOn 832S with not much improvement.

I've used my DRU-700A with no problems. My first DL burn went without a problem. Then to my horror, I found that the DL disk would not play in my Sony RDR GX7 recorder. This recorder has played everything I have used so far. It's a shame that Sony didn't test the compatibility of it's own products before their release on unsuspecting punters.

The dual layer disks produced on the DRU-700A seem to work on other players. I have asked Sony Support for help but they have not aswered yet. I have installed the latest firmware update (VY05E) but this just produced a beer mat.

Has anyone got any ideas ???

Gord

This drive has been flawless. I've burned a number of DVD+R's (both DVD-ROM and DVD-video at 4x) and quite a few CDR's (at 40x) and every one has been perfect. The dual layer capability is also a huge plus (and the reason I waited to buy a DVD recorder until now). I haven't found a reason to complain about this drive yet. Here's hoping that I don't! I can certainly recommend this drive.

Great Burner, burns everything I have thrown at it. All the media plays great on all of my DVD players and Xbox. Using modded firmware from: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html

I also found that the dvd tray was loose when it was open. I've burned several movies on Sony dvd+r disks and they work fine. Also made a couple audio cd's without any problems.

This is the best burner ive used yet. I haven't had a single problem with any of my copy's. I hope they come out with the dvd+r dl soon. That's why this burner gets a 9. For those people that have had a problem with this drive or say that it's bad just don't know what there doing or have a crappy cpu :)

DRU-700A with firmware vy02 can burn Ritek Dual Layer DVD+R 2.4x 8.55GB media by DVD Decrypter 3.2.3.0 on WinXP just using ISO read and then ISO write to backup a DVD movie.
The burned DL DVD can be played on my APEX AD-1500 and CyberHome CH-DVD300S DVD player with original quality.
Unfortunately, all of my old DVD burners and DVD drive can't read the burned DL DVD.

I was planning on taking this back after a couple of days of using this burner, until I went to the Sony website. I was burning discs that wouldn't even be recognized by my set-top player (Shinsonic DVD-100a that will read pretty much anything you throw at it. I updated the firmware to vy05, and also read the information they have on the website about acceptable media. There are a few brands that they say are acceptable, and when using that media, I have yet to have the burner make a coaster (I had one coaster of Verbatim 8x, but there were dye problems on the disk--black dots).

Well, with acceptable media it has been perfect. I burned my first dual layer today (which I got in the Verbatim DL media Solution Kit) and was really excited when it played flawlessly on my set-top. I ripped an ISO with DVDDecrypter and burned it with Nero 6.3 (Sony edition that came with the burner). I also burned a Verbatim +RW with no problems.

I give it a 7 because I have about 50 Memorex 4x discs now that I don't want to burn because most of them will be coasters. Unfortunately I already sold my Optorite DD0201 that wouldn't burn much more than Memorex media.

I am burning a DVD with the burning plug-in for DVDDecrypter right now and it seems to be working well.

Check the Sony website for acceptable media--it will save you a lot of time and a lot of money.

Returned my Sony DRU-700A. Failed to write Datawrite +R 2.4x single layer, hit and miss using +RW disks. Will keep my faithful old Sony DRU-500A which has no problems.

I have recently upgraded my DVD burner to the DRU-700A and so far seems to be working fine, except that the tray appears quite flimsy (ie: has a fair degree of play or movement in the open position), compared to my previous burner (ie: Sony DRU-510 A). Has anyone else observed this or is it the particular unit that I am using and is it a fault? Any comments/feedback would be appreciated.

I had no problems with memorex media @ 4x. Worked fine even with my pioneer home cinema.
The drive came with firmware version vy03 and i upgraded it (to version vy05) prior to any recordings. Maybe it will work out for you guys. Get it at http://www.sonydigital-link.com/OSD/downloads/downloads.asp?l=en&sc=dvd#firmware

I,m Returning my DRU700a! PC detected it, but would not play dvd,s would not read or write to blank media! tried Datawrite + 2.4X, and 8X, in the end put my old ricoh back in! only writes 2.4X! but reliable!

Memorex 4X ( RICOHJPNR01 media code) do not produce stable video when burned at 4X. They work OK at 2.4X however. This media worked fine for me at 4X on my Optorite DD0203 DVD Burner...

Had the unit for a week in a Windows 2k3 system.
Burned about 10 Single Layer DVD's, at 4x. No problems at all. Burned a few audio CD's as well, no problems.

Burned my first DL yesterday:
7.5gb of DATA. (Can't justify a $15 disk for video just yet, when I can shrink video down to a $.80 disk).

Took 40minutes to burn. You only have 1 speed options 2.5x. There is no option to go to 1x or 2x.

I have been able to read that burned disk in 5 different PC-DVD players. Later tonight, I will test it with a CAVS DVD-Karaoke player. (The disk is a backup of a 7.5 Super-CDG Karaoke disk)

The media looks just like any other DVD media. Purple in color, Verbatium logo the heck out of the top of the disk, but it is a functional top. Enough room to write description, with out "fitting" it in.

I will post a MEDIA review later tonight when I can grab it's media code.

Works great now. Had also issues with on-the-fly burning of DVD's. I am using Intel Application Accelerator Drivers 2.3 now, no it works ok.
