The only reason this does not get 10/10 is because of the slow spin up and no DVD-R. However, I can now get DVD+R's I burn with this drive to play in my old APEX-AD600A by using LITEON's BOOKTYPE utility. I have had this drive since NOV 2003 (about $100 from NEWEGG which rules by the way). LITEON continues to provide new firmware and utilities, so I am really happy with their support. With over a year of ownership and moderate usage (1-3 burns per week) and NO COASTERS I can definitely recommend this drive. I have had problems with DVD+RW disks freezing for a few moments here and their during playback, but only when burned at 4X. If I burn them at 2.4X, they work fine. I am thinking that this may be a media problem (Memorex DVD+R 4X). I was planning to buy a new drive and give this one to my other half who doesn't have DVD in her computer. I am seriously thinking about just getting another 401. In any case, my next drive will definitely be a LITEON.

I have had this drive when it first came out and i will tell you i have not had one problem with this drive .
everything i throw at it has been rock solid.from making my own b/u to on the fly recording.I even have this drive running on linux Mandrake when i hot swap the hard drive.
I have had alot of cdroms and cdrw roms and have really been impressed with liteons quality in their drives.
every one i have bought is still working as good as when i first bought them.Thank you

I bought mine 401S in November 2003 in Wallmart for $98. The first unit went bad in December. I exchanged it for another one and never had any problems with the second unit.
Yesterday my 401S became 811S, thanks to Bryan from two posts below. Now I can burn -R/RW (if I need to), and also I can burn TDK 4x +R disks (and may be others) at 8x.
This is just great.

This is the first burner I have bought,as it was on special
and didn't know any thing about burning dvds I decided to buy it. Burnt a few coasters at first, until I descovered dvd shrink and nero.NO coasters since even though I only use the cheapest media I can buy. Seen where you can change it to a 411 and then to a 811. Be Very warey as when I Changed it to 411 it Failed,Thought I destroyed it forever,Thought wotthe heck and proceeded to change it to 811.thank god it returned to normal,THINK 10 times before atempting to do this upgrade.Haven't tried to Burn a dvd-r yet. HERES HOPING.

Those hacks you are looking for are here... Update your 401s to a 411s then to a 811s.

I've had this Writer for just a few days, but I am very impressed. It is my first DVD burner and I haven't had any problems with it so far. I'm burning with Ritek 4x media and have only had 1 coaster (user error). I'd recommend this one to anyone. Another quality product from LiteOn.

I have this drive for a week, seems a little bit problem witg 2x DVD-R (3 coaster, 1 succeed all Maxell). But very good with DVD+R (4 okay no coaster, all Arita). Read somewhere in the net, that we can patch the EEPROM and Firmware tp 411S to make it DUAL drive and it works!
Read again that we can even upgrade it further to 811S to enable burn with 8x speed. I try it and it works! now I have a dual 8x DVD writer with a single 4X price.
Viva Lite-On!

Made 5 dvd+r coasters and 1 dvd+rw coaster due to writing failures with the unit. Otherwise made 15 excellent discs. works great with my rca dual vcr dvd combo.

Well I got this drive at walmart for $49 . It didn't even the dvd's burnt on my 411s.. So I updated the firmware and then it works like a charm.

as for the 411 upgrade.. it didn't work lol

I gave this a 9 out of 10 a 10 would have been -dvd r support.

Good player, though doesnt support writing as ROM yet...this caused first movie to be "jumpy" when played.

Problem hopefully will be fixed in future Firmware, but for now its poss to upgrade firmware to that of the 411S...check out
http://liteon401s.front.ru/
but use at your own risk; noone at this forum or any other will take responsibility if it all goes wrong.

NB: this allows to write to +/- R ;)

Purchased for £80 in the UK and have not had one coaster yet, either with quality media or some really cheap nasty stuff. All the discs play faultlessly on my DVD players. Am even happier with it since upgrading it to the 411S with the Firmware/eeprom hack as it has burnt all -R that I have thrown at it without fault either. Excellent value for money in the UK.

My only gripe is that the drive is slightly slow in spinning up when you insert media.

Well, after reading all the other comments, I knew this had to be a good writer. I couldn't understand why I couln't get it to write more than half a dvd before running into a communication error. I called tech support, and while they were eager to help, and friendly, couldn't figure out my problem either. After burning 20 new frisbees with Nero, CopytoDVD and the Roxio bundled software I was at my wits end and decided to try one last thing before throwing my new burner off a 12 storey building.

What I did was buy an internal IEEE Firewire PCI card and install it in my Dell L1000R. Then I took the QueFire external CD burner I had hooked up to my Mac laptop out of its external case and swap it with the Liteon 401s. I plugged in the firewire and presto! No more frisbees. It cost an extra 29.99 for the IEEE card (just about what I spent on frisbees) and a little ingenuity, but I finally got it. Plus, now I have an external DVD writer I can use with my PC as well (?) as my Mac (havn't tried it on the Mac yet...don't know if there's a driver available for it).

Anyway, since the people at Liteon had never heard of my problem before (401s could read, no problem, and they'd never heard of getting a writesector error in CopytoDVD) I'm going to assume not many people have run into this.

I still have no idea why the writer wouldn't work off the IDE cable, but I guess it's a mute worry now. But if anyone else ever has a similar problem, rest assured that you can probably do the same thing with your existing external writer (USB my work as well). All you need is an IEEE PCI card and an external case (you can buy just the case for pretty cheap if you don't have one).

Good luck, happy burnings...

I was very happy with my Lite-On LDW-401s. Burned 5 B/Us with out a problem. I then decided to upgrade the firmware to ES0J. DON'T UPGRADE TO THIS VERSION, IT SCREWS UP YOUR DRIVE. This version only allowed me to write at 2.4x no matter what media I through at it. On top of that if you were able to finish a b/u it skipped and froze horribly on my desktop DVD player.

I found a little utility that will allow you to rollback your firmware version.

http://digi.rpc1.org/flashfix.htm

I rolled back my firmware to ESOG and now works like a champ. It now records at 4x and I have no problem viewing DVDs b/u on my desktop DVD.

This is my first DVD burner. I owned it for 2 months($103 in Hong Kong). I have burned one movie and 3 discs of my home video with Ulead Movie Factory. All of them (Imation discs)play back fine in all my Chinese-made DVD players. I connected this burner to my Dell notebook via IEEE1394 in external housing. A perfect combination. The computer said it was working in 4x but it took 25 minutes to burn a disc, adding the 1 hour initialization before that I need to spend one and a half hour to make a DVD. It is rather time consuming. It makes me consider buying a standlone DVD recorder.

I am very pleased with this burner. It works perfectly with dvd+r(+rw) and cd-r(rw). It's superb ....

The new firmware (ES0J) has solved my problems with SKY DVDs.
With the old firmware (ES0G) there were very high error rates at the end of the DVDs (Check with KProbe). The old firmware already had no problems with Ricoh media. I only can recommend the writer. The only disadvantage is the missing Booktype-Setting.

Very good recorder. I had only one problem. I have encountered errors while recording data on AKOSS DVD+R disk. Recording speed was 2.4x. Errors were at the end of track (about 90% data was correct). I haven't had any problems with Phillips disks (+R and +RW both 4x). Disks are full compatible with Pioneer (old model - 1999/2000) player.

I have burned 9 movies on medianca dvd+r now and they have all worked perfect on my stand-alone dvd. I have also burned both data and audio cd-r on highest speed, and they have also worked perfect. Not one coaster so far.
All I can say is that this is a stable writer! Thumbs up!

Best drive so far, I recently owned the Plextor PX-708A, TDK
Indi DVD 440N, and the nec ND-1300A and this liteone drive is so much faster than all of the ones I previously owned. I know this site says it doesn't support dvd-r/rw but it does. I've drive dvd-r/rw and dvd+r/rw and both work fine. Even their web site says they support it. Their site stats ATAPI/E-IDE Half-Height internal DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD-ROM/CD-R/CD-RW/CD-ROM combination drive. So this site needs to fix that, I haven't tried the rom yet though. But anyways this is the best burner yet for the money 100 bucks shipping and all, and not one coaster yet. Way to go liteone!!

I've had this burner for about 3 weeks now and am very pleased with it. I love the fact that it can burn cd-r at 40x. All but one movie that I've burned plays on all of my players. I can burn 2.4x dvd+r at 4x with no problems.

This is a very nice burner...I got mine from INTERNETISHOP for only $109 w/ a DVDXCopy software. The software itself have some problems but when I've used the Copytodvd software itworks just fine. I've burn about 3 movies now and it's just superb...the only problem I have encountered was the error writing to a +RW...it won't recognize the media I'm using which is FUJI DVD+RW but it works just fine on a FUJI DVD+R...hmmm...wonder what's wrong...anyhow, this is really a cool burner so I would suggest you get one..

I had some problems playing disks burned on the Liteon on my Hiteker standalone DVD player (BI600).
Purchased a DMtech DMP-300 and problems are gone!
Works fine with all (Ricoh) media and burns 2,4 speed disks at 4 speed without any problems. No playback problems on my DMTech player.

Got it from NewEgg $97 delivered FedEx. I've used Lite-On cd-rw drives and have had excellent results consistently. This one is great! It is a bit slow to start up, but that's not a problem. And, this is one quiet drive. Bundled software in retail box isn't good. I've used DVDXCopy Xpress, but I prefer DVD Shrink and ImgToolBurn (also have Nero5.5). My standalone players read the discs without a hitch. Highly recommended...great price.
