Help! Got my Emprex 16x DVD Dual at outpost.com for $59.99 and it is GREAT at: 1) read and burn CD's (Audio & Data) 2)read and extract DVD's BUT, when I put a blank DVD+R in it - the green drive lite flashes continuesly and the system locks up (My Computer "Not Responding") and I have to power off the system to get the disk out. I am using Memory DVD+R 4x DVD's and I have an older NEC DVD burner in my system that works fine (when I put the same blank Memorex DVD in the NEC, windows "sees" it as a blank disk and asks me what I want to do with it. I have the latest Emprex FirmWare (A082). I waiting for a response from Emprex Tech Support (but it may never come). Any ideas on what the problem is, and if I can do something to fix it>
Thanks,
Pablo

I got this DVD writer at Fry's 2 months ago for $70 and it is great. I have burned over 150 DVD's and not one coaster or corruption of video.
Make sure you upgrade your firmware i can't stress that enough. Most of the time i burn at 4x and that takes only 12 minutes. I use the Greater Quality disc and they work great, i was even burning at speed rated higher than disc on one of the firmware but lost that after a firmware upgrade.
Summary, it is a great DVD burner for the price, superb clean burning and make sure you upgrade your firmware!!

I've tried updating the firmware with the dvrupdate program and i get an error message every time which doesn't allow me to complete the update. Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks in advance.

When I first got this drive around last November, I thought I had made a big mistake. It made nothing but coasters even at low speeds, and that was true with CD's too. I had bought it at Fry's, but didn't get around to returning it.

With their house brand DVDs, (GQ) I had only managed to burn one DVD successfully before I gave up after making a stack of coasters.

With their newer drives, they recommend going to http://www.drvupdate.com/download.htm to get a utility that installs new firmware automatically. That utility works just fine with this drive too and they recommend using it, but did not say so with the original drive documentation. There's no need to burn it to a floppy or recable the drive as a secondary slave and boot from DOS to change the firmware.

The original firmware was useless. I think it was 0046. Since that time, they have gone through many releases and they got progressively better. (The first two digits are the release, so 0545 is the 6th release of 0045 and is older than 0046.)

I can now burn name brand disks at any rated speed, i.e. up to 4X for DVD. I use BeAll most of the time and have had a 100% success rate. The GQ disks now burn at 2X without any problem. If I try at 4X, sometimes they work, and sometimes they seem to work (burn without reporting errors) but fail verification.

If you have one of these or come across one that was giving somebody problems, you should be able to get it working with the right firmware and discs. There are much better and faster units on the market these days for much less money, so I would not recommend buying one new.

same deal got it from fryers outpost.com. ok I've had this burner for about six months. burned over 150 dvd+r's vcd's music cd's seems like a pretty decent dvd burner. until, (duum, duum, duum, duummmmmmm......) i tryed to burn to dvd-r's. like I said its a pretty good drive, but when i tryed dvd-r's I got some kind of error message. Bottom line is -r's dont work at all. but be cause my 30 days are up I can't return. so i emailed the company because my warrenty isn't up yet. they sent me a firmware update 2.50 now i have already tryed 2.71& 2.72 with no luck. but moneys funny right now and i have to use up these arita dvd+r's these babies are cheap and they play in my apex 1100w but not my apex 1225.

Now for the goods
memorex+r's===== good
memorex-r's===== bad
fuji+r's===== good
fuji-r's===== bad
arita+r's===== all good
digital matrix+r's these use to be the cream of the crop but they have changed the way they make them and now they no longer work in my apex 1100w (and she plays everything)although the emprex plays it fine. so i guess there======== good
GreatAZO 4X DVD+R same deal with these they burn flawlessly but would not play in home dvd player
when my card comes in the mail i'll purchase a 5pack of fuji or memorex -R's then i'll post to let yall know if the firmware from the tech support is any good. if any one hear anything hit me up
peace.

Haven't had too many problems since I started to ignore the shoddy software that came with it. Use NEro 6 and DVD Shrink and it's been working like a charm now. Interesting reading all of your posts.. the link to comparison of the Emprex and Digital Research drives shows the Emprex logo on it.. got mine at Frys (Fremont, CA) and it has the DVD dual logo on both faceplates that came with it.

All in all, you get what you pay for ($69). So I can't complain THAT much.

If there's a problem with this unit, I haven't found it yet. It installed easily as expected, works as expected, read things as expected, etc. And I got it on sale at Fry's for $71.99.

Decent for price, but finicky with dvdr and cdr media. Bought unbranded DVD-R media that won't work. Wasn't working with unbranded CD-R media until upgrade with 0.49 firmware. Will they make a new firmware upgrade for better DVD-R compatibility? Hoping so - would like to use 25 pack that is wasted... Not holding my breath, though. I would have purhcased a higher end burner if I had known.

Bought at Frys. Had for over two months. Burns the occasional coaster but usually my fault or the media's. Overall can't complain with the quality for the price.

using nero 6.X and apex 1110w dvd player.

using memorex 2.4x RW...20/20 successful burns..work on dvd player

using 4x good quality +r, 0/5 ....this was horrible...even after the burn the player could not read media.

update firmware to v.48

using memorex as above 5/5

using GW as above 5/5, but would not play on my dvd player
using memorex 4x +r 5/5, but would not play on my dvd player

This my first writer..also bought as Frys. When I tried to burn cheap disks (GQ) had errors until I did a firmware update...now burns great. Can't complain at all.

I purchased this from Frys Renton. I have tried burning 4 GB data to the GQ DVD media (bought at Frys). I had no problems burning but, I am not able to read/retrive the data.
It takes more than 2 hrs to copy the data back to the hard disk and then it fails.
I have checked using 3 DVDs but same result.
I cant even return the disk now, I have moved to another country.
Do not know whether the problem is with the writer or the media.

Bought one at Fry's (Seems they are one of the only resellers in the US for this otherwise little known brand) for $94.00 (Renton, WA). I installed in a self-built Athlon XP 2500+ based dual-boot (XP & Redhat Linux 9). Worked fine right off the bat. In general, the drive seems a bit sluggish compared to my Sony Model DWU14A. The one coaster I made I blame on the crappy Cyberlink software that it came bundled with. The Roxio 6 software is good enough, but Nero still works better. Of note: it works great with TMPGEnc DVD Author! Burnt 19 DVDs so far flawlessly! In my opinion, killer bang for the buck!

I bought the Emprex drive tonight as a replacement for my DRU500A which, after 13 months of sterling service, no longer works (power calibration errors on DVD+RW media).

The drive I purchased has an 11/2003 manufacture date and version 43 firmware. I got the drive at Frys Electronics for $US99.99 + Arizona tax.

The drive works with Nero 5.5.10.54 and it was a seamless replacement. Literally take the old drive out, put the new drive in it's place and it just works. No software changes needed, no win2k reconfiguration, no new drivers, nothing. DVD's burned on the new drive play flawlessly in my set top DVD player.

It works for me :-)

PRINCO DVD-R 4x good
SKY DVD+R 2,4x good
ULTRON CD-R 700MB good
i am still testing different media

I cant really say if it is better than other burners but i can say that the software bundled with the Emprex SUX...in fact I am learning that nearly all the software is immature...reminds me of the SCSI 8x CD burner days! Any coasters were generally DVD's (about 6 or so) and I blame it on the software. Once i figured out the quirks of the software I got better burns. Since this is my first DVD burner I am dissapointed at the need to educate myself with crappy software...but the drive itself is a good piece.

+ I baught this drive from Fry's for $79.00.
+ I have burned 10 movies and uncountable SVCDs and 1 vcd.
+ I have made 3 coasters total.(All DVD)
+Great Drive. Changeable faceplates (Black and White) were a nice plus also.

- Coasters made are from user errors or trial and err.
- CDRWIN Doesn't like the drive.

Bought two of these at Fry's for $89 each. Got some Maxxel 4x dvd-r media. One of them set up and burned 6 dvd's one being the dvd+rw that came with it. 1 dvd-r must not have finalized correctly because it takes forever to spin up and I get crc errors (same drive that burned it) while the other 4 dvd-r's work fine the movies play in the home dvd player and the data discs read fine in another dvd-rom. Not sure what to blame the one coaster on. The dvd+rm won't read in anything, spins up quick, but lots of files with crc errors. As for the second drive... well everything it's burned so far has turned out great 10 dvd movies and 5 data discs... but the damn thing won't read a single disc that it has created. I get an "incorrect function", I removed Nero 6 and put Nero 5.5 back on and updated it at Nero's stre to 5.5.10 something or other, and now it reads just fine.

All in all I think this is a much better drive than the other brands.... and it was damn cheap! I blame the specific problems I was having on software and computer configuration. Don't plan on installing a DVD burner in a computer that has even the slightest of issues, these need to have a perfectly operating system in order to function properly.

OK - hooked it up, ripped a DVD (one of my Trigun discs), burned it, played it on my home DVD player (Apex 2100), and "Boo-Ya!" it worked like a charm :)

More details:

My system:
Homebuilt AMD Athlon 1200+ (1GHz)
256MB PC133 RAM
17GB Seagate EIDE HD (for everything except ripping files)
40GB Maxtor EIDE HD (for all my CD and now DVD rips)
Motherboard with VIA VT8363 chipset
Windows 2000 Professional SP4
DirectX 9.0b
ATI Radeon 9200SE AGP video card
Emprex 4x Dual-format DVD EIDE internal drive, firmware 0043

Media used:
Memorex DVD+R 4x (25 pack from Fry's for $39.99)

How I ripped and burned:
1. Ripped to HD using DVD Decrypter 3.1.9.0
2. Burned at 4x using Nero 6 Ultra Edition 6.3.0.2

As I watched the ripping progress, I think the read speed reached 4.9x (speeds got faster as the rip progressed - probably due to the higher velocity as you read further out on the disc).

No problems at all during the rip and burn. I played the disc back in my Apex 2100 - it was a little finicky and had to be reinserted twice, but it's been finicky lately with commercial DVDs so not blaming the DVD burner. When I watched the DVD it was perfect - couldn't tell any difference from my original Trigun disc. No re-encoding necessary though since the original is a DVD5 disc, so any differences would've been due to read/write errors as opposed to compression artifacts.

So, all in all, I'm REALLY happy with this drive :)

Hope you have good luck too!

This is just informational. I've confirmed that at least some of the OEM drives that Emprex uses are the same DVDRW1004IM drives that many brands are using.

I've posted details with pictures showing the drive alongside an identical OEM drive packaged by Digital Research. You can view them at:

Bought this @ Fry's too. got it for $99, seems ok. I'm new at burning DVD's, so I think there's a bit of a learning curve as far as software usage goes. I've been able to burn using DVD DeCrypter and DVD Shrink, but some of the movies get that pixelation going and some freezes too. I'll try some of the other freeware out there and see what happens. So far, no major complaints. But then again, this is a Fry's product.......

Same deal at Fry's. I've burned everything with this thing (VCD, CD-R, CD+R, DVD-ROM, Audio CD's), and I've had no problems with it. I've used every kind of media known (cheap, expensive, and everything in between) DVDs and VCDs play on my Panasonic DMR-E50, and my PS plays the DVDs with no problem. I'm using Nero 6 for most of my burning. Used DVD X Copy and Intervideo WinDVD also with no problems. My guess is that most of the people with complaints didn't burn properly, or used bad media. My friend also bought this thing, and he's using it with no problems either.

I bought this DVD Burner at fry also for around 100$ and for the price/preformance ration its scores gret i have burn over 20 DVD and 1 has failed cause of underrun (my dumbazz) any way considering it is cheap you may have to get better media but i use cheap fry's dvd 2x dvd so hmm... Any way the drive need a firmware upgrade to really let it shine heres the link " http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=18296&highlight= " they have a firmware for the drive read this thread thoroughly however i dont want ppl bitchin at me for destroying theyr DVD burners OKies

I have written 3 DVDs so far, Memorex DVD-R media with Pinnacle Studio 8 SW and pentium III 1GHz 256 MB machine.
All three play very well on DVD-Rom I have (IBM laptop and a Ricoh DVD-ROM drive). They also play fine on my Cyberhome
standalone dvd player.
On my Toshiba 2715 dvd changer however, I get slight pixelation occasionally and freezes playing every so often for about a sec and continues. This is annoying.
