LDW-411S
Stay away from it. This thing has given me too many coasters to count and that's with latest firmware and Nero 6X.

I got this writer at Christmas 2003, so it's getting quite old. It has turned out to be a superior writer, I've burned about 300 CDs with it, only coasters I've gotten have been because of bad media, and I've burned around 250 DVDs as well, have got maybe 10 coasters total, all of them have happened with DVD-R media, I don't know if that has been the medias' problem or the writer's, but it has burned 200 DVD+R without a single coaster.

It's disadvantages are that it's pretty slow, but considering how old the model is it's pretty fast.

No problems with it so far, I've upgraded my firmware without any problems so it burns more discs at full speed than it did with the original firmware.

LDW-411S works fine. IF your having problems then check your fimware. Also works fine with v6+ of nero, but not with the older v5+.

I have owned my Lite-on LDW-411S for exactly one year now. I have had little trouble with it besides the occasional bad burn mostly because of cheap media. Last week I purchased some 8X Memorex DVD-Rs and the burner only saw them as 2X media. I called Lite-on Corp. to ask them if there was a fix and they told me to upgrade my firmware from their site to version FS0K from the FSOJ that came with it. I did this and found after the successful "flashing" of the firmware that my burner no longer is seen as a burner and can be only used as nothing more than a DVD-rom it will no longer read any blank DVD format as useable! My second phone call to Lite-on was "no joke" a wait of 5 hours on hold! I finally hung up and called back at 2AM as they have 24 hour service. The customer service guy was smug and very unhelpful and told me it is not there problem. I have seen several other forums listing similar bad service from Lite-on and the same problem with the firmware (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=110977). Talk about a scam they sell you the product than after the warranty expires they give you bad firmware to ruin the product so you are forced to buy a new one! Expect NO help from Lite-on as they do not stand behind there product! BUYER BEWARE of any Lite-on product!

Had my 451 for about 9 months now (bought feb 04), and have had no trouble at all, apart from 1 coaster (or 2 at the most). I mainly use it to back up DVD movies, using DVDshrink and burn with nero. Its so easy to do and only requires a couple of button presses. Open the movie with DVDshrink, reduce the quality of the movie`s extras to as low as they will go (you only watch these once anyway), which will give the movie more memory and better quality then press backup and walk a way. An hour or so later you have a perfect copy. I have not found a movie which wont backup using this method. I have mainly used Bulkpaq orange (because my friend give me them) and Verbatim (because they were on offer), and have not found a DVD player which wont play them.
If I had any criticism, it would be the disc tray feels a little cheap.

Got a couple of months ago for $25 on a discount w/ coupon.

Upgraded to FS0K recently.

Burnt about 50 discs.

Highly recommend. Does much much better than the pany LF-D311 that I paid >$500 for 2 years ago.

Can't beleive they can make and sell these things at this price. I've paid more for a Steak @ Hereford House.

Couple of Comments. Make sure you make this the master on the secondary motherboard slot. I had all types of problem w/ conflicts with the other burner when I ran it through a PCI/IDE card. Had to disable the other burner. I don't have RAM support now.

Each Firmware I upgraded to from FS0F has reduced media & player compatibility for DVD-R/RW. I've now switched almost completely to DVD+R/RW and am having no problems. In fact DVD+R media is now cheaper in my area. Got a 50 pack for $22.

Try not to specify write speed. Just set it to max. I've seen a tendency to write coasters otherwise. At 4x absolutely keep your burn hard drive on a seperate IDE channel as it only has a 2MB device buffer.

Seen compatibility problems w/ older panasonic, kenwood and JVC DVD players. Excellent compatibility with newer models.

I've had this drive for 10 months and am very pleased with it, I've burned about a 1000 discs now and he's still working perfectly.

This is absolutely the King of Cheap DVD writers... Hands down. I had originally sold one of these to get an 8x opto-rite, well that turned out to be total garbage. I recently replaced the opto-rite with an OEM LDW 411s and have had nothing but great luck with it.

I am getting it off ebay OEM brand new for $39.95 and it is by far the best DVD burner I have ever used.

look no further, get yourself an LDW 411s.

I use Ulead and Nero for burning and would recommend this drive.
It would not complete the burn using Norton Ghost (this is a popular brand-Norton should have included it!)

This is a really bad drive i ony had it for about four months and the stupid drive stoped working, now all it does is srach up all the disk i put in it, i could not get any one to help me to replace the drive(Lite-On Support Sucks!), so i want and bought me the same drive and returned it with the bad in there and told them it did not work. Thats about the only way to get a replacement with out going insane by calling there support over and over and over agin!!!

Posted a comment in late March I wanted to follow-up on. The 411S made over 30 coasters. Tried about a dozen types of media, every burning software out there: CloneDVD, 321 Studios, Fab, Nero, etc, then uninstalling/reinstalling them. After an unbelievable run-around with Lite-On tech support, they finally issued me an RMA. I returned the drive to Lite-On and they completely replaced it.

LiteOn die-hards can rave all they want here, but I guarantee if just one of you went through what I did, you'd never have another good thing to say about LiteOn. After the first 30 days the drive started slowly getting worse, burning more-and-more coasters, one-after-another. Keep in mind this is after the 30 day store warranty expired! Only resource after that, LiteOn.

Let me just say LiteOn has the worst cust svc/tech support of any company I've dealt with. It took 3 weeks of emails and voice mail messages before they finally responded. Yes, 3 weeks after my first voice mail messages and emails, they finally responded. First off, they don't answer the phone, or at least they didn't in late March/early April. All you get is voice mail hell. When they finally did call back, 3 weeks after the first of about 6 messages I left them, I had to spend an ungodly amount of time trying this-and-that, per their gurus, before they would issue me an RMA.

I told those jerks all along "the drive is bad" you're wasting your time and mine. Their reply, we have to follow procedure. I spent hours/days completely re-doing everything with them I'd been trying for 2 months. I found myself uninstalling software, reinstalling sw, formating my drive several times, reinstalling Windows 2000, and doing the same to various recording software, only to have them continue saying "well now try this".

After about 10 back-and-forths over a 2 week period with these jerks they finally issued an RMA. I wasn't going to let these a**holes get the better of me. They did replace the drive, but I lost total respect for them as a company, with all the hours/days of BS they made me go through to finally get my RMA. If you're thinking about buying their product, AVOID these jerks like they plague. Their support completely sux. If it's too late to avoid them, pray to god you don't ever have to call them!

I have since bought an NEC 2500A and burned about 70 disks over the past few weeks, with the same media the 411S couldn't handle, and not ONE COASTER. You heard right, not one skip, pause, or flaw of any kind. Every NEC disk plays flawlessly! NEC totally blows away the LiteOn piece-of sh*t those jerks in California tried to stick me with, and make me give up on (meaning - I truly think their tech support wanted me to give up and keep the bad drive).

I will never again by anything made by LiteOn

Ok my friends......after hours of reading and try (lot of disk)..i discover the perfect way for use this machine.

for a perfect back up of all cain of DVD with a lite on 451 do this:

1. be shure to have the last firm ware intalled
2. download the book type program in the web page
3. use DVDshrink to put the entire DVD on the HDD (i'll not explain how use it...that you can learn in forums)
4. then reboot your pc and insert a DVD+R of a good trade mark (not -R, and forget the players incompatibility.....with this method don matter)
5. Use the book type aplicattion and change the book type to DVD-ROM (follow the liteon web instruction)REMEMBER THAT, FOR THE BOOK TYPE OF THE DVD THERE WILL BE NO IN SCREEN CHANGES AT ALL....BUT THRUST THE BOOK TYPE SOFTWARE.
6. ONCE YOU HAVE CHANGED THE BOOK TYPE don close the aplication.....and inmediately use the CopytoDVD for to back up the DVD....LIKE ALWAYS....the copyto dvd will say that its recording a DVD+R....but dont worry....its all right.
7. finally, you just have maded a DVD-ROM, in the best recording media type, that you can play in any DVD. You can check the media book type in the same bookk type software.

beautifull!!!!!

I have the ldw-411sx (external version) since few months and I am extremely happy with it, very compact, very reliable, used through USB connected with my laptop, burns with no problem at 4x both +-R and +RW, not used till now -RW (max 2x). Different brands tried, Creation, RPS, TDK, Philips, Fuji, Smartbuy, Samsung, Princo, only had problems with this last one. Also tried CD-R @ 40x, fantastic!

Just two small observations: first the mechanics looks a bit sensible, but you just need to threat it properly and it is not a problem. Second he doesn't like very cheap DVDs (e.g. Princo), but the same happens with my Home DVD Player, so I just avoid them.

All in all a very good choice, and its price is very much compensating the two small problems listed above.

Buy it!

To all owners of LDW 411s:
I've had this drive for bout 5 months now, and my strong recommendation is to never use this drive with Nero 5.x
Use "Copy to DVD" - it's great! Not a coaster. Used cheap "create" media and burned in 4x - Not a coaster!
In Ner 5.x i got costers every time with 2x speed.

Best burner!

One thing not mentioned is that this drive will write Karaoke compatible CD+G CD roms. Use CDRwin from Goldenhawk and you can quickly burn discs compatible with your local pubs Karaoke or home systems.

I have had my 411s for over 6 months and have made many copies and I never have any problems, I only use Copy to DVD and DVD Shrink. I always defrag the partition that I rip the movie to and only burn at X1. Blank media is too expensive to create coasters with and I am more than happy with the results that I get.

Have used since December and burning has been flawless using Nero 6.6.0.2 or Dyd Decrypter and Memorex 4X. Only coasters have been operator error. For $79 5 months ago, you can't beat it.

I bought a LiteOn 451S two weeks ago for $118 CAD and had nothing but problems. The device looks cheap and operates the same way. Opening and closing the door produces horrible noise. I've tried different media and got inconsistent results. The last drop was today when the drive refused to read and even format CD-RW disks I burned yesterday. Returned it to the seller and it was confirmed to be defective. Added $20 more bucks and got NEC ND-2500A.

411S - Bought around Thanksgiving from BestBuy for $79. Since then, about 1 out of every 2 movies I copy are bad, freezing primary problem. I've even purchased 6 different dvd players, and verfied all burned coasters on all 6 players. I now have a stack of about 50 coasters (literally)! I have tried about 8 different brands of media: Maxell, Ridata, Platinum, Kypermedia (-r,+r,+rw), Starlogic, Imation, TDK, etc. I've only found Maxell +rw to consistently burn ok. This burner really sux! I've tried 3 different LiteOn firmwares, and same result, 1 out of every 2 are coasters, and only Maxell's expensive disks burn ok. I've tried a combination of DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, CLoneDVD, DVDxCopy, DVDxCopy Xpress, no difference, still 50% of the time coasters, unless I use Maxell. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Windows XP, constantly check my DMA settings, updated VIA drivers, close down all background aps when burning, uninstalled/reinstalled all burning/coding sw, and still, 50% coasters unless I buy expensive $1.00+ Maxells. I hate this burner, and I've spent many many hours trying to figure out what's wrong with it. Avoid this burner like the plague, unless your willing to only buy Maxell expensive dvd's. Anyone want to take this piece-of-**** off my hands? Will probably buy an NEC or Pioneer today, tired of coasters, spending too much time trying to figure out the problem with this thing, and tired of buying expensive media. Plus, I've sent several emails to Lite-On about my problems, and they have yet to send back even one reply. 2 of my co-workers use all of the same sw I use for burning, and, we all go and buy the same media together. Can't figure out why, when they burn the same movies I copy, using the same sw, with the same media, they don't get coasters and I do. One of them uses and NEC, the other a Pioneer. Seems I've finally narrowed it down to the Lite-On. Again, DONT BUY the 411s.

wish it was faster. but for $95 at newegg, can't beat the price. have made a couple coasters, but i think it was because of the media (memorex dvd+r).

NOTE: These comments refer to the LDW-451S.

Compatibility Problems:
- Problems with cheap media (no manufacturer's ID) have been encountered.
- Recording quality with low quality media (e.g. Princo, InfoSmart) is poor.

Advantages:
- Good seek times for a DVD burner.
- Can be upgraded via firmware to a LiteON LDW-851S with 8x DVD+R support. With the latest LDW-851S firmware, this drive can burn RICOHJPNR01 media and others at 6x and 8x Z-CLV with great results!
- Shorter than most other DVD burners.
- Frequent firmware updates means good support for new media.
- Great for backing up copy protected discs.
- Compatible with KProbe for CD/DVD error checking.
- Because it's a 4x drive, you can pick one up for next to nothing.

Disadvantages:
- Poor instruction manual/user's guide.
- Questionable build quality.
- No Mt. Rainier support yet.
- Does not read or write to DVD-RAM.
- Poor burn quality on cheap media.
- Questionable results with KProbe for CD-R/RW burns.
- Bundled software is medicore.
- Bundle does not include an IDE cable or blank media.

First thing is first, take the OEM software that comes with the burner and chuck it as far as possible. Then download a copy of Nero Burn (Nero Rocks!). So far I have only burned one coaster and it was a cd I was trying to do a wierd conversion from MPEG-2 to MPG-1, totaly my fault. I use TDK 4x +r in this burner, they show to be RICOH on the dvd info tool.

You guys need to go over to www.cdfreaks.com and check out their Liteon forum. There is a wealth of info there. I personally own a 451S and have upgraded it to 8X with info from the site above. I use Book Typing or Bit Setting with DVD+R discs and it writes discs as if they are DVD-ROM. These discs play in everything with no problem at all. This is the best burner I've ever seen. The cheapest and most reliable discs I've found are Maxel DVD+R 4X (but they'll write without issue at 8x). I've also used Princo 4x DVD-R and Memorex DVD-R 4X without issue. I have had major trouble with cheapo SKY Media and will never by that media again. By the way, NewEgg has the 451S for $95 free shipping right now.

great dvd burner. no problems as yet; used for month. like very much the slim, compact design. fast extraction times; longer than average seek times for dvd movies cds. it came with bios, FSO5, flash before use with latest, FSOJ. using Decrypter, DVD Shrink, amd Nero Burning Rom Ultra 6.3.0.2 for backups and Sonic MyDVD for home-movies vcd's. been burning high quality media, Imiation, Memorex, TDK. the cheapest used is Verbatim 2X dvd-r, this media is little problematic playing on PC dvd rom drives opposed TV dvd players. It is not the burner; my friend has a Optorite D203 4x dual dvd burner and media acts the same way after doing a movie backup. NTI CD & DVD-Maker 6.5 Platinum recoqnized the drive, but B's Recorder Gold 5 doest not; this is one reason why it got a 9 out of 10 in my book.
