Worked well when new about 4 years ago on Imation and Memorex DVD-R media. Performed terribly most recently on Maganavox and Sony DVD-R media. It's success rate is about 25%. I've had no trouble with CD-Rs.

No problems at all with this one. I've been using it from october 2005, writing hundreds of CD/DVD, and it works as a charm. Had problems with some cheap disks (Omega), but those are extremely bad.
No problems with good disks like Imation, Sony, Traxdata, Verbatim, Emtec and Intenso.

This drive is a workhorse. I have thrown all kinds of media at it. Hasn't given me a coaster yet. I use it with the full nero 6.6 suite. Runs great have used atleast 10 kinds of quality media dvd-r, dvd+r, cd-r what ever I put in it burns it and does it fast and quite. Much quiter than my Lite-on. Great drive liked it so much I installed one in my mothers pc.

All DVD-R's and RW's have been recorded flawlessly so far, I've recorded about 600 DVD's on 2 NEC 3540. According to Nero this writer seems to make a calibration every 512 MB - at least the recorder-buffer goes to 0 every so often - e.g. 8 times on a full DVD5 and it does so every 12% - but this doesn't seem to have a negative impact on the results. What I like about this writer is the high read-speed on burned media - up to 16x, so verifying with Nero takes only about 5-6 minutes, the Pioneer 109 on my other PC needs 10-11 minutes for the same task, an LG 4163 even 13-14.

Great Burner! Works Perfect, not one coaster In almost 200 DVD/CDs. I highly recommend getting one. I'm about to get a 3550A hopefully the quality is the same. I've never had a problem with NEC.

Media: Sony 4X +/-
Memorex 8X,16X +/- & DL 2.4X
Nexxtech 8X +/-
Teon 8X +/-
Princo 8x-
tons of generic Stuff

Purchased NEC ND-3540A at Newegg Feb 2005. United initially burned everything well and DVDs at 16x. Unit began to refuse to recognize CD-R's and two weeks later failed to recognize DVD's of all types all media. Bought second NEC ND3540A from Tiger Direct October. Second NEC ND3540A began by failing to recognize all brand new and burnt CD-R media today and intermitently stopped recognizing DVDs. Installed and reinstalled all drivers and Nero etc on 3 computers same result, defective NEC's. This is the last NEC DVD burner I will ever buy. There are thousands of reports of NEC burners refusing to recognize media after only a few months use in Google.

Just got mine from newegg.com on 10/20/05, came bare/OEM in black and was an easy plug 'n play.

It writes perfectly but it doesn't like to read some Memorex, and the worst combination is : DVD decrypter + NEC 3540A + ESA DVD (cheap, unreliable discs from Circuit City), I was hoping to back up ESA to better Media, reading pretty much just stalled.

Luckily, my other writer Memorex was able to read the rejects from NEC with the help of Nero Express. I am happy that NEC 3540 is not my sole writer and it works beautifully with Memorex 16X writer.

Thanks to all the reviewers.
I’ve had it for just over a week now. Burns flawlessly using Any DVD, DVD Shrink and Nero 6.6.016 using Arita/RietkG04 DVD-Rs. They even play on my cheep stand alone dvd player. I rate it 10 out of 10.

I bought this burner on the strength of the reviews given it right here on this website.
I did have a Samsung TS-H552U.
I put the NEC in my PC with no problems at all, No software needed to install.
All the media which the Samsung wouldn't record to has worked flawlessly on the NEC, All the DVDs' have worked in all of the standalone players I have.
Just one word can some the NEC ND3540A up, and that's 'PERFECTION'
I'll finish on that, Very pleased with it.
If you're looking for a burner, Then get this one, I can't imagine any of them being better.

Excellent burner. First, copy full DVD to S-ATA HDD for some 5 minutes with maximum speed of 22 MB/s. Burns everything I tried, and I mostly use good quality media (Verbatim, TY, Ritek). After flashing with 1.W5 firmware, Nero automaticly sets DVD+R to DVD-ROM.

Had this writer for a week now and it has performed flawlessly. Can't complain about any noise problems when compared to my old Pioneer-106 (which is still going strong in my kid's computer). I am using Taiyo Yuden for the important stuff (home movie archive), and a mix of RitekG04 and Imation-CMC MAG for anything my kids might get their hands on. All have been written at 8x speed, though there is an option in Nero to burn at 12x. So far no problems. Very happy with this drive.

So far the reliability is good, no coaster yet. I used all types of media( Memorex,TDK,Maxell,Prodisc) and they all burned well. The unit is not as quiet as some people say. You can hear the spin up and the opening/closing noise is noticeable. Overall, this unit is good.

This is an outstanding DVD writer. Highly recommend it.
Work great with CD/DVD encloser with USB 2.0 and firewire.
No problems with Ridata's 8x RITEKG05, Maxell's 8x RITEKG05 and Sony's 8x (burn at 16x) SONY08D1. Burned over 50 DVDs.

Here's a review on the NEC 3540 ;-

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/214/1

Now I will add my own humble comments...I bought this writer on the strength of this review above and I was NOT dissappointed! I got it on 18th July 2005, from Express Computers ( http://www.express-computers.co.uk ) and I pulled my old TDK DVDRW0404N writer out of my PC and stuck the new NEC 3540A (I got the Black one) in to my PC, and it just worked, no mucking about, and no software needed (I bought the OEM version of the 3540, just the bare drive, no cables or software).

My old TDK 0404N writer used Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD / Instant Write (version 7 I think) as the bundled software (I got the retail version of the TDK drive, which was
actually a rebadged NEC 1300A). I have many cheap brands of media available to me locally (one of the biggest blank DVD media sellers in the UK is just 1 1/2 miles away from me) and I can get the brands called DATAWRITE, RIDISC, RIVISION, RITEK, and INFINITI, in all sorts of variations of discs. I buy these discs since they work out as being about 20 pence each (45 cents) when you buy 50 on a spindle in a 'cake' of discs.
However my old 0404N did NOT like ANY of the cheap discs and always made errors and burned mostly coasters. I can go to PC World store and buy Phillips, Verbatim, TDK, Sony, etc... brand discs but they are VERY expensive (like 1 GBP / 2.20 USD per disc even in packs of 25!!!) so I NEVER buy them.
The only discs that I actually managed to get working with my TDK drive were some very expensive DVD+RW Memorex discs that someone gave me to try, at 2 GBP (4.40 USD) per disc!!!! So that's why I was getting rid of the old 0404N.
My new NEC 3540 drive was dead easy to install, perfectly standard. I used the cables from the TDK 0404N drive to install it. I am just in the process of backing up my data onto DVD-R discs (I bought RITEK G05 DVD-R 8x Silver Printable discs from Lightning Computers http://www.lightning-computers.co.uk ) and so far no coasters and everything seems to work).
I didn't install ANY software, WinXP SP 2 just detected the drive and installed it's own driver (without accessing a CD or anything) and then for backing up my data I have been using Windows Explorer. When I click on a bunch of files, and 'copy' and then 'paste' them onto a DVD-R in my new NEC 3540 drive, on a blank DVD-R, it says "preparing disc" and uses the previous TDK writer's software (!) Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD version 7 / Instant Write to format the disc and then the data is burnt onto the disc. I didn't have to mess around with ANY settings or anything.
Then I finalize the disc. When I used to do this with my TDK writer using the same Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD version 7 / Instant Write, it ALWAYS failed on my cheap
discs, but with my NEC 3540 writer with the exact same software on the above Ritek cheap discs it has now written to and finalized 3 out of 3 discs successfully so
far. One out of the 3 said "error in finalizing" but when it had completely finished I ejected it and re-inserted it and read the data back in, the data checked out perfectly, the drive read all the files, all the ZIP and RAR archives were fine, so I am a happy bunny, at least for now. So that seems to have finally sorted out my old, long running, backup problem.

Last night (20th July 2005) I made some DVD-Video discs (using the same Ritek 8x DVD-R discs mentioned above) in the 3540, and bugger me it all went very smoothly and I ejected them and put them back into the PC and they played back perfectly.

They also played back PERFECTLY in my Sony SLV-D950, and also in my Compacks DVD-S580 and Technika DVD-104 cheap Chinese players, which really did suprise me!! Now I can finally make my own DVD discs!! This is wonderful!

I love my NEC 3540 since it likes cheap but quality media like the above Ritek discs, and these same Ritek discs then play back perfectly on all my 3 DVD players and the drive only cost me 40 GBP inc. VAT, which is pretty good going for such a new drive in rip off Britain.

This drive is definitely recommended.

one of the best DVD writers currently out there. One of the newer drives that supports faster dual layer write speed. also seems to have a few fixes over the previous model (the nec 3520) which is also an excellent drive. if youre in the market for a new dvd writer, get this or the benq 1640.

Burned my Verbatum 8x DVD-R media at 12x with no issue. Burned my Fuji 4x +R media at 8X with no issue. Burned Maxell 2.4x media at (4x guess by time app did not show speed) with no issues. The dive also burned media sucessfully that my old liteon 411 had issues with. The only negative I have is the start up time is noticably longer than my liteon. This is the time the disk is roating before the actual burning starts. Aslo the fact that there is only a green activity light may bother some.

Good burner ! It likes good quality disks, with cheap media PI results aren't the best. It doesn't support bitsetting but, looking at cdfreaks, you'll find some links for modified firmware.

Burns fine on my 8x media out the box with Nero 6.somthing.

Super quiet, no fuss drive.

Only dropped a point since its a paler shade of beige than most other drives, could be a +ve point for some people.

Got this drive yesterday and burnt a DVD+RW and a DVD+DL without any problems, the dive is definately quiet and more refined than its previous siblings, however I did notice the video quality of the second layer was not as good as the first one but maybe it is to do with the quality of disc (used Traxdata 8.5 GB +DL disc). A definate must have.
