To play vcd in xbv343
Using remote with no disc in player
Turn on power, wait until "disc" appears on display. Press "pause"
Enter the #'s 1,4,7,2. The "EEPROM" numbers should be
on the tv screen.
Make note of the fourth pair of numbers. Mine was 55.
Using the right arrow, place the cursor under the second'5'. The xbv343 display should now read "04 55". With the cursor under the second 5, enter the number '6'. The numbers on the xbv343 display should now read "04 56".
Now press "pause", power off and back on and play your vcd. It worked for me.

To temporarily play a Region 2 disk on a Region 1 player (on mine
bought at Best Buy in US, December 2003):

1) Insert Region 2 disc
2) Wait for "Check Region Code" alert on TV screen
3) On remote control, hit "Display" button followed by 2, 2, 2 (doesn't
have to be too fast)
4) Press play

I have no way to test it, but I bet this works with any region disc.

I got this from the DVB312 hack page (see mr deutsch post). I suppose
this works for the XBV342 as well but haven't tried it.

I just wanted to confirm that I was able to use the hack that was posted previously (for another model) by the user named "Deutsch". As Mace points out - you can bypass the region check with this player using the "confuse the player" scheme.

- Insert non-native-Region DVD
- Wait until the "Check Region Code" box appears
- Press "display" on the remote
- Yellow box appears on screen with "1/#" designation for track
- press any two # keys in succession - timing is not very important
- Press "Play" on remote

I have found that by pausing the movie and "messing" with the DVD player setup menu - I was able to re-trigger the region check... and without any fanfare, I simply re-entered the sequence above and was able to get past it again - even in mid-stream on the movie.

Also - this DVD is PAL encoded - and it played flawlessly on my NTSC TV - so this Zenith model must have a built-in encoder/decoder.

I just wanted to thank all of the users who provide this information. I have a region 2 DVD that was given as a gift... and live in the U.S. I find that watching foreign DVDs with non-english subtitles is a great way to learn / re-enforce a foreign language.... it's a shame that the mighty marketing dollar would drive such shenanigans when there is tremendous cultural benefit to being able to watch foreign DVDs in the U.S.

For those interested - I just purchased the XBV343 from Best Buy in the U.S. as well. Cheap - hassle-free... good quality (so far.)

Anybody know if there is a multiregio hack for the XBS344?

PostRegion code posted by D, January 15 2004:

Hey, I just got my XBS245 from FedEx (kick ass home theater system with DVD/VCR) and that VCD hack worked! I was reading the hacks for all other Zenith and LG DVD's and I guess they all have the same programs or hardware cuz they all use the same hacks. I think Zenith is part of LG or the other way around. I'm taking this to Mexico with me, cuz I study over there, so when I get over there I'll try out the region hack, if that doesn't work I don't know about trying the firmware(burning the CD) cuz I heard that it might mess up your DVD player PERMANENTLY if it's not the right one.

I was wondering if thr EEPROM has anything to do with the type of region hack you can use or if u can even use one, I has the XBS 245 and CANNOT find any region hack to work and I am to chicken to use the firmware hack, cuz I've been told that if it's not the right one u can fuck it up forever. But the VCD/SVCD hacks do work. Can people who have successfully used the region hacks tell me their original and new EEPROM codes? Thanks
