HP dropped the ball on this drive. They not only discontinued support for it, but they removed all the drivers and firmware from their webpage. Continued support would have been useful, because the drivers often cause a BSOD on XP.

The rumor is that the 300i is really an NEC ND-1100a. Another rumor is that the ND-1100a supported both +R and -R writing, but -R writing was disabled in the firmware before release. Yet another rumor is that the hardware is the same as (dual format) ND-1300a; and that the only difference is in firmware. So if the ND-1300a firmware could be flashed onto the HP 300i, the claim is that it would then become a dual format drive.

I've had a 300i for about 5 months now. Burned about 50 dvd+r's with it and I was very impressed. Quiet, fast, with no compatability issues. Would have rated it a 10 EXCEPT
The drive died on me. Finished burning one dvd, went to do another and suddenly the drive would not work. Won't recognize any discs at all (commercial discs or burned, cd or dvd).

Have had this unit for 6 months, has never burnt a coaster yet. Have had some problems with some DVD+RW not playing in other players. I believe this is more the players fault then the HPs fault.

Use mainly Maxell DVD+RW with no problems. Burns CD+R no name brand flawlessly. What can I say very satisfied with this product. I don't usually use HP products as they are low quality, I used to work for HP, I know what goes on with this company, but I got this DVD burner so cheap I could not pass it up.

Had no problems writing to CD-R's but I burned a whole lot of coasters trying to write to DVD+R's (got errors at the end of the writing sessions). After trying a bunch of software combinations & reinstalls, I talked to HP and they sent me another drive. Turns-out the drive was defective (or unreliable).

My opinion of this drive changed from "not good" to "very good". Reliability is good with RecordNow and Easy CD/DVD Creator 6.

Successfully used Verbatim DVD+R's with no coasters yet (with my new drive).

I'm having audio/video synchronization problem when authoring with Showbiz so I'll probably be using something else...

I bought an HP 300i in January. It worked really well for 2 days, and then refused to recognize any media whatsoever, so I took it back, and they gave me a new drive.

The interesting thing is that the replacement drive was completely different to the first one. They were both in identical boxes (HP DVD 300i), identified themselves as HP 300i, and had 300i writen on the faceplate's. That aside, they were not the same.

The first drive was black inside, and the faceplate had a different layout (LED on the far right). Very strange.

I'm a noob and have burned 25 dvds using CloneDVD, TMPGEnc, and so far no coaster. I'm using Imation 4x+R discs. It's a very quite drive. Only "problem" I have is that it can't read a few DVD-Rs made by my friend, but I think this is due to my friend's bad disc (media), I don't know if it's the -R media, but the HP seems to read other -R discs from other people fine, so it's prolly my friend's fault.

This is a very quite drive. I can't hear a thing. I'm giving it a 9 rating.

I've had the drive for a month now, it's wonderful. Haven't had any problems. Not a single coaster. I've burned the HP discs it comes with and about 25 Verbatim discs. I software that comes with the drive is simple and works good as well

I've had this burner for 10 months. I have over 20 movies and over 30 PS2 games. This DVD writer is great. I use FUJI and Philips media. I've never had a problem with this unit.

I give it a 10 because any dvd that I have backed up has played in EVERY player I have stuck them in, including my PS2. I rate it as a 10 because I have only had 2 newbie coasters and that was in the first week I bought it. Now I NEVER get a coaster and thats with any media I have bought(too many to name). Quiet drive, I just wonder how many dvd's it will burn before it peters out. As for only being a '+' drive only doesnt matter to me as I have said....they ALWAYS play! Oh...and I gave $149.99 at Walmart for it.

Have had this drive four a couple of months now. Got it on sale at CompUSA; I believe price was $149 after rebates.

One of the quietest burners I've had, CD or DVD. You can hardly know when there's a disk in it. Have successfully burned many CD-R and CD-RW discs as well as numerous DVD's, both +R and +RW. Never made one coaster with it.

Using Windows XP, Roxio EasyCD creator 5.3.5.10n (only for CD's not DVD's), TMPGenc DVD Author v1.5.15.49 and Acronis software all write to the drive no problems. Only complaint I have is that you have to have HP's software loaded on your system in order to get the firmware downloads successfully uploaded to the drive. I would have much rather had a self-run utility to perform that as I desired. (Otherwise I have no use for the software that came with the drive.)

System: HP Pavilion 321n, AMD Athlon 1600+, XP Pro

I've had my 300i for about 2 months. I've burned Imation and Fujifilm discs (about 100 total) with only one coaster. I use DVD Decrypter for ripping and Intervideo for burning those 8+ gigs onto the 4.7 disc. No problems so far. The discs played great in JVC, Samsung, and Pioneer players, along with a couple of lesser-known systems.

I'm now using un-branded 4X discs (50-disc spindle for $39.95 from digitalcomputersolutions.com) and have not had one problem. I purchased 100 DVD cases for $16.00 at mediadiscountstore.com.

I totally satisfied with my purchases.

Comments posted by JeeMac from Other, December 08, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

So so burner. I also found it won't burn to cheaper DVDs, like Fujifilm and Pengo. Wish I knew that before I boaught a slew. Else, it burns OK to the more expensive (HP--of course--and JVC were tested).

Also, my buddy bought one and it died after 200 DVDs, roughly. I learned all this too late!

You've really got to ask yourself about these factors before you buy one. Wished I'd found this forum before I purchased.

regards,

g

Good burner. However, cant get a 4x speed burn out of it on DVD movies. HP sells it as a 4x speed burn, but the firmware they flash it with doesnt support 4x burn. They keep telling me call back next week to see if they have released the 4x burn speed firmware. Other than that, no problems, very dependable.

I got a smokin deal on this DVD+RW Writer at Staples about 3 weeks ago. They were selling it for $199 ($269 - $70 instant rebate), but they had a misprint on the in-store label and they sold it to me for $99! Can't go wrong with that. The drive is super quiet, you can't tell when the disk is spinning most of the time. I haven't gotten around to burning a dvd yet, but I can say that it burns cd-r's really well and fast (this burner has buffer underrun protection too). If I have any problems with it, it's just that it doesn't like black cd-r's and now I have a spindle of them to get rid of. For the price, i'm happy even just the 16x burner part considering I was only using an 8x before. NOTE: THIS DVD WRITER CANNOT BURN, NOR READ THE BLACK MEMOREX CD-R'S.

I just bought the HP dvd300i. It's a great writer. I haven't tried DVD media with it yet, they're too expensive. I have tried normal CD-R and it seemed to burn fine and fast. I bought it at an excellent price at Office Depot. Apparently it was selling for $249.99, and they had it on clearance for $99.03!!!! I picked it right up, and payed $120.19, with the product replacement for 1 year. My only bad feeling about it is the fact that its only DVD+R/RW compatible. It would've been nice to get a +/- drive. I'm extremely happy everything worked out though, my DVD player ONLY plays DVD+R. So why am I complaining?
Overall, great writer, burns fast, works well. I dont like the software HP packages with it but, we've all got our preferences. I recommend you get this.

I bought this drive from Office Max with @ 299.99 - 100 Instant Rebate. Great Price. I then took my external USB CD Writer and cracked the case put this one in and my laptop recognized it at a HP DVD300N (Don't know what the N means) but now I have an external for 199.99

UNIT ROCKS!!!

I have been burning with this drive, HP DVD300i, which came with my custom built HP 2.66Ghz Pavilion for about 1 month now. I've had good success with Memorex DVD+RW but it's only a good deal when there on sale. I've since bought a 50 splindle pack of Optodisc 2.4 DVD+RW from Supermediastore and paid only $1.89 each incl shipping. Burned about 12 DVDs and so far they have played perfectly in my Sony DVPNC665 5-Disk DVD Player. You will need to buy some cheap cases but they are on the net cheap too. Great thing with the +RW is if it doesn't play right the first time you can burn it again and not waste $$ on a coaster. I haven't seen just plain +r disks enought below $1.89 to be worth buying.

This is a fairly good DVD+R/+RW burner based on the NEC ND-1100A hardware and Firmware. But NEC added a feature only for HP, the possiblity to change the Compatibility Bit DVD-ROM <> DVD+RW.
A disadvantage: With the actual FW the drive cannot read DVD-RW, oh well.

BTW, how stupid must someone be, buying a DVD+R/+RW only burner and then asks for software-upgrades to enable DVD-R/-RW burning????????

The Sony Dualburners arent based on NEC drives!

Go for 1 of them or wait for the P.x06 or buy a NEC 1300/TDK indiDVD 440 or a LG 4040 to get a dualburner.

Hi,

I use this burner from a couple of weeks and I want to know if there is a firmware update who will make it compatible for DVD-R/-RW disks.

He's on ND-1100A chipset based like the Sony DRU500AX. So why not ???

But where can I find Updtae ???

I've had mine for almost a month. I have not had any problems with it. It is very fast and seems to burn 1x media at 8x speed without any compatibility problems.
