GSA-4120B "Illegal Disc Error" when quick formatting/erasing to HP DVD+RW media with Nero version 6.6.0.13.
Firmware versions A101 to A115.
Media is Actually Philips.
Remedy:
Use DVDInfoPro to quick format/erase the media.
Nero will not erase the media.

For several months this drive did what it was asked, but it now refused to recognize or burn DVDs... fine with CD's.

There are references to this problem on the Net, but no solutions. I'm not sure if it's an LG issue or whether it applies to other brands.

In any case, I have never been able to update the firmware: just get the error that it failed with a code of something like "0000 0000 0000". So updating the firmware is not a solution. In any case, it used to work with the old/current firmware, so that's not the problem.

Windows will no longer update the driver either... give an error: "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The data is invalid." Since there are not LG drivers there seems to be nothing else I can do.

Too bad.

this drive most definately sux , having first had its predescoor that lost focus during burns and burnt inaccurately rpolaced for this 8 x version , works well for 6 months now im getting more coasters than usable disc, using ritek dvds and cds, am seriously considering using a pioneer (at least they have been doing it longer than LG)

i have the GSA4120B which I bought for $80 Canadian. I upgraded the firmware to A11 from the LG web site, and sofar have had no problem with burning.

I noticed that on the net there are versions A12, A115 (and A115-2) on http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1841

My question is, what do the newer versions give the drive?

Got one 2 weeks ago. Burns succesfully on DVD-R E-Pro 8x, DVD-R Verbatim 8x, DVD+RW Traxdata 4x. Haven't try dual layer yet , but no problems with other formats so far...

Comments posted by Caeswar from Romania, December 08, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

Got this drive over a month ago. Writes -r ok at 4x but i could not get 8x dvd-r's to work until i got firmware version 104 from lg website. Get this drive and datawrite dvd-r 8x as they are a cheap and fast combination. Havent tried dual layers yet though. I see there is another firmware update out now also! Wrote 4gb in 8 minutes with nero and made a full dvd movie with Sonic MyDVD in around 10 mins! (but make sure you get the latest firmware or 8 speed wont work without focus/tracking errors)

Last year, I bought a LG4040B. After 10 monts of use, the unit died giving me Track/Focus error.

Called LG support and they replaced my 4040B with a 4120B FREE of charge. LG is fully aware of the infamous Track/Focus error.

Shipping didn't cost a thing, LG took care of everything. FEDEX delivered the new unit and picked up the old one.

O.K Took them 3 weeks to change my unit but still...

P.S.
I live in Montreal Canada, warranty was 1 year. CALL LG!!!

Bought one 1 month ago due to the great hype about this writer (i.e. burns anything).

Got a bunch of coasters with this writer trying to write on POSTECH POSG02 DVD-Rs which never failed on my Pioneer DVR-106. Write failure has always been reported as failure to Track / Focus. Tried all the Firmwares without success.

Is it a mechanical defect? I wonder. Getting a replacement under warranty would be costing as much as a new writer due to shipping charges.

Works with Datawrite Classic Yellow 4x & both plus & minus flavours of the 4x Mirror Platinum (white) discs. No problems with DVD reading & writing (fastest reading DVD and seeking). Slightly slower on CDs compared to my other drives (Liteon 52x32x52x16x IDE Drive(COMBO)& a seperate CDRW drive [can't recall the manufacturer - least used]). Not yet tried faster medium or my ram discs on this drive. All above media left over from my 4040B? LG 4x+/-rw/ram drive, I've now given to my dad. Not tried any dual layer media yet. Could ship with better burning software, suggest that you pick up a copy of nero.

works great with memorex DVD+R 8X but not with memorex DVD-R 8X for some reason it see's errors at 8X and when slowing it down to 4X movies come out really choppy. with the +R's a movie works perfectly, even in my old RCA 5 disc changer which won't even read CDR's. I haven't tried anything else in it yet due to lack of DVDr's in the local stores, all other reviews i've read say it should take anything you throw at it but i don't forsee changing anything since i have found a winning combo. runs for $75 on NEWEGG.

As "US Guy" wrote in 09-12-04, it does not like to burn 4x RW Ridata medias at 4x speed. I am using FW A102, as it came from the store. It burns DVD_RW Ridata G04 4X at 2x speed. Have not tried to update its FW to see if it goes to 4x but it may keep at 2x as "US Guy" have already tried it. :-(

This is my first burner, so I don't have anything to compare to. I've been burning almost nonstop for a week or so, not a coaster yet in 150 discs or so. I've been using Prodisc S03 and S04 at 2X and 4X, haven't tried 8X yet, soon. I did have to return the first one when it died on the 17th burn, but the replacement has been green lights and smooth sailing every time. I needed something to do RAM, which it does flawlessly so far, so not many choices. I've about given up on Panasonic lately and never did like Toshiba. So after 2 days of homework on the LG I went for it and am very happy I did.

Did my homework and read the reviews looking also firmware upgrades. All the discs I have burnt are Philips DVD+R 8x at 4x speed! No coasters yet. All play in my stand alone Plustron DN906 Micro DVD player. So Im very happy with the drive. As I was with the LG 8520 burner it has replaced. Good value for the money.

I have not been able to write at 4x on -RW, there are RiData 4x -RW. But it was OK writing at 4x on +RW , even on 2x rated discs.

I have patched my FW with both official and TDB's latest A110, still no luck.

I also found that it does not like any Princo discs so far. But my other burners (Sony and HP/NEC) had no problems what so ever.

Comments posted by US Guy from Canada, September 12, 2004. Rated this writer 5 of 10.

So far so good.
It burns well with Princo DVD-R no coasters yet.
Can be bought (in Perth Western Australia ) for $129.00 Aussie dollars.

This is my first dvd copier. Backup the system with dvd-ram is so powerful.
dvd-r, -rw with verbatim goes so good.
I've only bought one DL at the moment, but trying with shrink 3.2, when it comes to record, the program says I've inserted a CD-R.
¿any problem with version?
thanks

Drive does not like Datawrite Red V3 dvd-r, But it burns mirror 8x dvd+r at 12x

Comments posted by Nick from United Kingdom, September 01, 2004. Rated this writer No rating.

I'm not really happy with this drive yet, true no problems and just got it yesterday but it's bad. I have a Plextor 708A which burns 8X DVD+R and I only have memorex DVD+R 4X rated dvd blanks, plextor burns it at 8X while this new LG only burns at 4X, downloaded the new firmware for LG the A104 and still the same. Maybe that what makes plextor rated at top...

Strick:

I use InCD for DVD-RAM, using UDFv1.5 format for large size files, so far so good.

(If I remember right, UDFv2.0 format better for lots of small size files)

Never get the DVD-RAM-Driver work on my machine, which I know support FAT32 format. (InCD only support UDF)

DVD-R
= Works
DVD-R = Is not supported
DVD-R? = Not tested

Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
1x (CLV) = about 58 minutes
2x (CLV) = about 29 minutes
2.4x (CLV) = about 24 minutes
4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes

Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
1x CLV = about 105 minutes
2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
4x CLV = about 27 minutes

Single Layer (4.7GB) read speeds
1x read speed is 1.321MB/s = ~56 minutes
6x CAV (avg. ~4x) read speed is max 7.93MB/s = ~14 minutes
8x CAV (avg. ~6x) read speed is max 10.57MB/s = ~10 minutes
12x CAV (avg. ~8x) read speed is max 15.85MB/s = ~7 minutes
16x CAV (avg. ~12x) read speed is max 21.13MB/s = ~5 minutes

DVD Write types
CAV = Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is written at a constantly increasing speed.
CLV = Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is written at a constant speed.
ZCLV = Zone Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is divided into zones. After each zone the write speed is increased.
PCAV = Partial Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is being written at an increasing speed until a certain speed. After this speed it will not increase anymore.

Connection
Desktop = Standalone desktop DVD Recorder
EIDE = Computer DVD Writer with EIDE/IDE connection
SCSI = Computer DVD Writer with SCSI connection
USB = Computer desktop DVD Writer with USB 2.0 or/and 1.1 connection
FireWire = Computer desktop DVD Writer with IEEE 1394/FireWire/i.Link connection (some standalone desktop dvd recorder supports this also but then it is usually to connect your DV camera to the recorder)
