This media is quite unreliable. After finding out about a program called DVDInfoPro! I decided to recheck some of these discs for reliability. I had spent a short time burning disc after disc without verification or watching any of the movies.

So far I've tested 12 burned discs, 4 of which have reported many errors in the Read Error Test.

Two discs showed read errors that recovered upon retry often. These are okay but not perfect.

The rest seemed good. These are the ones I've actually tested, I've thrown away 5-8 discs that I was watching and the movie turned out unreadable half way thru. I don't recommend this media at all. It was inexpensive but now I will have to redo a bunch of Sopranos backups.

Bought 100 of these discs. Burn them at 4x, majority of them turn out okay. Originally I was burning with CloneDVD2 and they compelte successfully but upon playback 4-5 discs were skipping or becoming unreadable near the end of the films. I started burning with Nero because of the verify option and had 6-7 fail to verify. I've burned this media at 1x 3 times, all three times it was unreadable even though it was labeled a 1x disc. Not recommended for storing very important info. Accidentally bought thermal printable discs. =(

Update:

Actually, this is not a bad media after all. After burning (with Optorite DD0203, FW 2.23) for about 25 discs, all perfect burns and only 1 bad playback due to some goo mark on the burning surface. I can happily report that this cheap media is not bad at all for $.59/disc. I used to have some pixilations with my older DVD players but not with my PC DVD players. That led me to believe that my older DVD players could not handle the recordable discs very well. So I went out and got 3 new DVD players to test my theory: Apex AD-1225, Daewoo DVD-P480 and Kawasaki SVP500 and they all play the Sonic DVD-Rs(burnt at 2X) perfectly without any pixilation error as with my older players (Apex AD-600A, Pana A110, GoVideo DVR4200).

Just updated my Optorite to FW 2.25 and noticed nothing new, still good burn. What did Optorite fix in FW 2.25?

very cheaply made, thin & flexible. Recording surface appears to be very smooth & even. Burned fine at 1X & 2X with Optorite DD0203, however, recordings at 2X will play back with several (5-8) pixilation glitchs (but no freezes). 1X recordings seems to be better (1-2 glitches). So you have it, this media is cheap & not meant for long-term storage videos like home movies. TV episodes that you want to watch a few times is ok for this cheap media :)
