This drive can be flashed to Lite-On 832S and turend into DL burner (for links to firmware scroll down the comments). I did it with my unit and tried burning DL disc (Memorex DVD+R DL); it worked without any problems. Playback worked on both my desktop and 2 out of 3 DVD player. Make sure to use bit-setting tool and change book type from the default DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM before burning DL disc. I wrote my disc before changing book type, which is the primary reason one of my player does not play it. NERO CD-DVD Speed disc scan revealed 100% accurate burn (no bad sectors).

Since I posted last May, the problems have continued much the same. Out of hundreds of DVDs burnt and various brands (Infiniti, Mirror, Bulkpaq, Datawrite) I would said one in four has been a coaster.

I have had similar experiences to those already mentioned: the drive going through the recording cycle and disc being blank. CDs never mess up. Very disappointed with this drive...

The percentage of coasters increased lately across all brands tried, so today I went out and bought an NEC ND-3520A.

drive started to give me "POWER CALIBRATION ERROR" when trying to burn 8x memeorex/maxell and other walmart brand dvd-r disks
with US0F BIOS I have burnt about 300 dvds with this drive and about 20 cd's and data disks hope the bios update will fix problem, I'm about to upgrade to dual layer drive anyways so it's no big woop :P

I've burnt over 100 discs with my 812S since I bought it last August.I've used Memorex media on this model,Fuji,Verbatim and some generic media I picked up at Fry Electronics.I've used Alcohol 120%,DVD Shrink,Nero 6,DVD Decrypter & Easy CD Creator 6.When I get another DVD burner this summer,it'll be another Lite-On.The name sounds a little bit lame, but the drive is hardly that.

I have three Lite-On drives in two different computers, a DVDRW and 2 combo drives. Never had any problems with them - all superb drives. Only ever had one coaster and it may have been dodgy media. I use TDK DVD+Rs almost exclusively, so can't say much about media compatibility. The extra tools available for Lite-On drives were also a lure (book typing, etc.). Great drives!

It was glitchy from the very first day I got it. It took it about 20 seconds to spin up and recognize DVD media, CD media was fine. It was writing DVD+R and Fuji DVD-RW very well and had tons of errors on pretty much all DVD-R I tried. Now after few months it finally died. It reads DVDs , reads and burns CDs, and fails on any recordable DVD media. I get either "laser calibration error" in Nero, or it pretends that it burns and than spits out the disc with no sign of any recording. I guess DVD burning laser is dead or the power ctl ckt if it uses a single one. Cleaning the lens did not resolve it. What a disaster it was compared to previous Lite-ons I had! Will not recommend any Lite-on products anymore.

I had it for 5 month and totaly unhappy and won't go with Lite-On anymore. Seams to me that -R/-RW support is very poor. I'm getting verification failed every on second disc.
Drive doesn't have any hacks. Media are Ridata 8x (G05) ,
Maxell 4x (TY), TEON 8x ( CMC).

My old Pio-105 was rock solid and still burns without coasters. So I got new Pio-108. There is no coasters anymore. Beware of Liteon. My two friends who have model 811 can't burn any -R media anymore, only +R

Poor media support. My original Imation 4x-R and Verbatim 8x+R discs worked. When those ran out, I couldn't find the same ones again, so I bought Memorex 8X +R(prodisc R03) and Memorex 8X -R (CMC MAG AE1). These seemed to work at 8x the first couple of uses, then I started getting verification errors after burning. I tried recording at 4x and it works sometimes, but fails to verify other times. Recording the same data on the same media at the same speed 2 times in a row will often result in 1 of them failing to pass verification.

I bought this drive hoping that newer firmware would increase compatability, but that hasn't been the case. Looking through the feedback here, I can't even decide which media would be safe to buy. After almost 8 months, I'm very disappointed in this drive. I think I'm going to replace it with another brand drive soon.

Good burner ,no problems ripping and burning a breeze and I got it from www.newegg.com for 60 bucks refurbed .I also have an 851 and I wanted to add another lite on because of the reliability and quality.

The rumours are true - doesn't like cheap -R media at all. However, I've even had problems with Prodisc branded as Memorex, and that's a recommended manufacturer for this drive. I may have better results stepping up to Ritek or Maxell media. However, I use cheap Generics for archiving, and good stuff for things I want to keep. When you consider the cost of going with good media all the time, the cost of the drive may be offset by the cost of the media. I'm keeping it for now (it came with my new computer), but it's already on my "upgrade" list.

I had this drive for about a month and I burned all my old home movies to DVD without any coasters! This works really well with Roxio and Nero 6.

Don't forget to update your F/W to the latest stock "USON". I just updated mine from "USOJ" today and I can start using my previously "crapy" DVD+R discs like the Ininiti's OPTODISC,MID:OR4,with low PIs and POs. Example in one burn I could get 70max PIs and 5max POs.Such results were unthinkable when I was using "OJ" F/W which could give me over 1000max PIs and the discs were totally unreadble in my standalone DVD Player.
So don't simply blame you 812S or the DVD Media, try latest F/W first.

Regards

Eric

Here is an update to Sohw-812S users. There are more proof that this LiteOn 812S can be Firmware-patched to LiteOn 832S DL drive,as long as you are comfortable with using hacked firmwares and your Application SWs. Check below link for more details:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=97781

As for myself,I am more than happy to keep this 812S as is as the DL media is still rare and expensive.Besides, my existing Appilcation SWs,i.e. Nero 5.*.* and Sonic MyDVD may recogiise the patched 832 yet. I have no plan to upgrade my SWs yet.
Just to let potential buyers know this.

Regards

Eric

Absolutly wonderful drive, LiteOn has never let me down... i was a little weary after reading the review at CDfreaks, it made it sound like the 812 might have some issues with cheaper media, but i found it absolutly loves a extreamly inexpensive 4x DVD+RW from Mwave.com... their branded Legacy but cdinfo says they are Infodisc (Disc MID = 49 4E 46 4F 44 49 53 43 (INFODISC) Disc TID = 41 31 30 (A10)) Havn't a single issue after 4 discs burnt, and K-Probe shows very low PI and PO errors... Havn't tried the 4x DVD-R Ritek's yet, will report back with any problems

good drive, quiet, solid. would not burn on 2 of 5 memorex 4x dvd-rs. weird. burned all tdk 4x dvd+r flawlessly. I actually got ripped buying a sony dwu-18a for $115 which I flashed with soj firware for 812s, and it works great still and choose not to return it cuz sony sucks anyways.

rgs_uk, May 02, 2004,

Hello, I read your above mail and would like to make the following suggestions (in order of their priorities):

1)making sure that your sohw-812S drive is "DMA" enabled and working properly in your OS,
2)update your firmware to the offical "S0J" in the Lite-On web site, which started to supprt Bitsetting,
3)try a known good DVD media, such as Verbatim's DataLifePlus DVD+R (8 or 4 X) which I used with ALL burns without a single write-quality problem when I checked them with Lite-On specific KProbe utility.

The beauty of using the above DVD+R disces is you can bitset it to DVD-ROM for maximum compatibility and speed. I have'nt use Infinite's disces before that is WHY I could not comment it.But sure it is NOT as high quality as above Verbatim! I am not related to Lite-On by any means, but just would like to help! I have been owning a Sohw-812S from Lite-On for a month and I am extremely happy with it as long as you use quality discs.

Good Luck,

Eric

Got this from MicroDirect last week with 50 Infiniti 4x -R blanks (great price). So far fine on the three DVDs that I've burnt. But of six ISO discs, three have been coasters with Nero reporting fixation error. The same after upgrading the firmware. I suspect it is when I almost completely fill the disc. Seems OK when I've left some space (eg. 250Mb) free. Haven't tried any other brand of blanks so far. Have burnt lots of CDs with no problems. I also have a 52x32x52 LiteOn Cd Rewriter which is superb. Got that to replace a crummy Artec which produced more coasters in six months than I'd had in the previous three years. LiteOn are great :-)

Mytflyguy,

Just follow this link: http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/e_index.asp

to upgrade your Lite-On's 812S (INTERNAL) firmware. The latest firmware for it is,according to this Lite-On's offical site, is S0J with more media supports and Bitsetting for DVD+R/RW discs. I tested the DVD+R using my discs after the burn O.K.

Eric

I just got it in today , and I noticed that my burn speed on 48x CD-R ( Imation) is only around 20-25 average with smart burn OR with 40x MAX.

Is this common ?

I checked on the LiteonIT site for firmware updates but saw none listed for this drive, can someone please point me in the right direction for a firmware update ?

Thanks in advance :)

Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
1x CLV = about 105 minutes
2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
4x CLV = about 27 minutes

Single Layer (4.7GB) read speeds
1x read speed is 1.321MB/s = ~56 minutes
6x CAV (avg. ~4x) read speed is max 7.93MB/s = ~14 minutes
8x CAV (avg. ~6x) read speed is max 10.57MB/s = ~10 minutes
12x CAV (avg. ~8x) read speed is max 15.85MB/s = ~7 minutes
16x CAV (avg. ~12x) read speed is max 21.13MB/s = ~5 minutes

DVD Write types
CAV = Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is written at a constantly increasing speed.
CLV = Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is written at a constant speed.
ZCLV = Zone Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is divided into zones. After each zone the write speed is increased.
PCAV = Partial Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is being written at an increasing speed until a certain speed. After this speed it will not increase anymore.

Connection
Desktop = Standalone desktop DVD Recorder
EIDE = Computer DVD Writer with EIDE/IDE connection
SCSI = Computer DVD Writer with SCSI connection
USB = Computer desktop DVD Writer with USB 2.0 or/and 1.1 connection
FireWire = Computer desktop DVD Writer with IEEE 1394/FireWire/i.Link connection (some standalone desktop dvd recorder supports this also but then it is usually to connect your DV camera to the recorder)
