I'm encountering alot playback hiccups with online content from YouTube in last month or two and also it takes much longer to start the playback, on latest LAV filters and Potplayer, I suppose it's not bandwith related as the problematic videos do play perfect smoothly in native browser container.

After reading in the change log "* Remove sponsor-related features," I tried this current 64-bit beta version today. The installer passed VirusTotal scan on all vendors, and the install itself was flag-free. So far have NOT noticed any occurrence of the corner "empty ad window popup." Runs beautifully. Caveat: as with all other versions, I have blocked potplayermini.exe for both In and Out in Windows Defender Firewall. What we all hoped would happen may have really happened. I would say, "get it while it's hot" before someone at Daum changes their mind. Note this review only applies to the version specified.

@ blud7 - thank you for your input.

The playlist is showing filenames (hence the quotes in my review of July 15th, and here) and the filename "14 29 Palms.flac" will not appear in the playlist. The track will not play.

When the file is renamed to "14 Twenty Nine Palms.flac", the track appears and plays.

This has nothing at all to do with metadata or tags, because I've not modified any of that and it's all the exactly same in both cases. I've only changed the filename.

I've taken the trouble here to refute your dismissive one liner because this IS a bug and SHOULD be fixed.

To the previous commenter, the player isn't "confused", it's just displaying the ID / META info instead of the file name.

This has become my go-to FLAC audio player with its good sound, neat informative interface and low resource usage.

BUT numbers in song titles still seem to confuse it. To explain, here's an example:
"14 29 Palms.flac" will NOT appear in the playlist
"14 Twenty Nine Palms.flac" will

Seems a simple enough thing to fix...

of all the paid and free players i've used over the years, with the many configuration options this player has and configured correctly, i by far get the best viewing experience with this player on my homecinema. it takes some knowledge to setup windows 10, madvr, and potplayer correctly to get that perfect picture and sound but that's true regardless of the player you choose. if you care about that then you need a player that allows you those options for both SDR and HDR content without limiting you. this player will play like any other player out of the box but unlike many players you have the options you need to taylor it for your specific setup. this player does that without being overly complex or too dumbed down. i used my previous favorite mpc-hc for years and it's another great free configurable player. IMO much better than VLC and absolutely better than any paid movie app for my purposes, albeit less configurable than potplayer. if you need inky blacks, bright whites and vivid color then you a good player setup to play on that expensive monitor or fancy 65+" hdr tv. not so much on your phone or budget monitor.

I loved POT-player when it was -REALLY- free ( and I was so lazy to avoid MPV)

Now I'm a MPV guy.

You can do (quite) whatever you want with the TOTALLY FREE MPV video player, if you are really interested in learning and understanding it.

It's the only video-player which is completely offering to you.. to be used and customized in any way YOU like and need.

It has a very steep learning curve (reading the manual gives you headaches at first and makes you cry) .. but once you GOT IT... .. .. . .

(and it's so fast.. it can use - at its best - EVERY resource in your configuration/setup/system)

MPV forever !

OK, I was wrong about the portable version. That's what the version says when you hover over it. However, after opening it and looking at the version, it says it's the most recent. Still, WTH? And my unable to play a video without freezing was entirely Windows fault because Windows sucks! That's what happens when you rage post.

Overall this is a great player. However, as others have mentioned the weird pop-up logo that appears, this review isn't about that. It's about the portable version offered here. It's from PortableAppZ, which is fine. The problem is the version states that it's 2018.12.12.23. WTF??? I expected the latest version, not this! This version keeps crashing. I can't watch an entire movie without this thing crashing. Never had this issue with the installed version. I'll have to reinstall (ugh!) if PortableApps doesn't include an x64 version.

Like reviewer vertigo, I had the problem of not being able to access the lower right corner of the screen. I wasted an enormous amount of time looking for a solution to the problem and searched google every which way without finding an answer. I finally discovered the cause of the problem by copying and pasting text that was in the invisible window and saw a reference to Pot Player. After not using Pot Player and not having the problem re-occur, it confirmed that it was indeed Pot Player causing the problem. I suspect that the window was invisible because I was using the modified host file to block ads.

Normally, I wouldn't give a free app a low "value for money" rating, but in this case, time is money and it cost me a lot of time, so it merits a low rating there too. Functionality is also low, since it crippled my computer until I stopped using the app.

I am using MPC-BE now. It does everything I need but is a little less convenient than Pot Player was when using playlists because it doesn't save your place when you close it. I have to re-save the playlist after each use to update it to the last video I was watching.

By far the best player from a functionality and capability standpoint, but it has some issues and the dev flat-out doesn't care, so it's a waste of time trying to inform him of them. And now he's including ads, which on its own isn't really an issue, since devs have to make money, but I'd rather pay money for it--and it would be worth it if the dev wasn't such an ***--and they're not even contained within the app. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't interact with things in the bottom-right corner of my screen then realized it was because of an INVISIBLE ad window by PotPlayer, even though the only instances of it I have running are on a COMPLETELY SEPARATE DESKTOP (Win10 multiple desktops). Sorry, but that's totally unacceptable. Highly recommend AVOIDING any version of this app newer than 190621, not only to not reward this scummy behavior but because having an app secretly running invisible windows, with web content no less, is a HUGE security issue. Unfortunately, last time I tried out alternatives, I couldn't find anything as good. GOM Player was probably the closest, but it had a LOT of issues.

From a technical and visual point of view, unfortunately the best media player for several years. But when the manufacturer was caught with adware, I made myself out of the dust.

I also find it questionable that Videohelp praises the player as "free and good".

Because it is not. It is a spyware. Therefore only 2 points from me

Since I changed computer in January 2019 PotPlayer stopped working properly. The problem was/is that with certain movie files, especially with "Interstellar 2014 IMAX BluRay 1080p AVC DTS-HD MA 5.1 x264-MgB [ETRG].mkv", the sound saturates/clips heavily when that didn't happened before (Q9400 win10 x64 to R5 1600 Win10 x64, same soundcard).
Tried every sound setting possible, of course including lowering volumes, wav volume, mixer volumes, and all other volume settings in preferences, also audio rendering, etc.
Well, last night I found the "problem" with one setting somehow I didn't tried before.
I have it on spanish so names can be different to the way I name them, but in settings or preferences -> audio decoding -> audio codec (through output) and change in DTS the "FFmpegMinimum64.dll" which is the recommended to "OpenCodeUnity64.dll(libDCA)" (did the same with AC3 just in case and I will see the rest). Then just lowering PotPlayer volume, as long as the volume method is the predetermined, to 65 seems to be enough or in settings -> audio -> first tab "mixer level" lowering all to 40%. Every other way (wav, individual volume in volume control) doesn't seem to do anything in the sense that the clipping will still be there even when the volume is lower.

I like Potplayer so much because it plays various Types of video files so smoothly and the Picture quality is also very excellent. But sound quality is satisfactory not to be as good as others Because the sound feels Crackling, distorted & Very poor during listening soundtracks due to low Bass frequency. Please add + Bass controls on this Player for best sound quality.
Thank you.

Pros: Highly Customizable & User Friendly

To the two reviewers below saying it doesn't support HEVC, it does. 8bit HEVC. I haven't installed any kind of LAV filters and it runs HEVC/x265 movies and sample videos out of the box. What it does NOT out of the box support is 10bit HDR HEVC. For that you need madVR/LAVs. Also what's with that adware BS? Haven't got a single ad inside the program or in the update setup(s).

Unfortunately, PotPlayer(both 32 and 64 bit) doesn't support HEVC/x265 videos. So it doesn't play HEVC/x265 videos. If you want to play HEVC videos with PotPLayer. You have to install external LAV Filters, additionaly. I hope owner company of PotPlayer solves this problem as soon as possible, immediately. I checked other players. KMPlayer and GOMPlayer are supporting and playing HEVC/x265 videos.

VideoHelp Admin: I reviewed back on 5th March 2019 that support for Windows XP had been dropped:
"It should be noted that Windows XP support has been dropped in versions AFTER 1.7.17508.
To use on Windows XP, version 1.7.17508 or earlier is required."

I'm not sure in which subsequent version it happened, but it seems support for Windows XP has since been added back - 1.7.20977 works absolutely fine with Windows XP.

November 2019, for new users - PotPlayer (born from KMPlayer) was originally made with the great code of MPC-HC player + parts of FFDSHOW audio-video filters. It's quite reliable (more bugs than MPC-HC), quite fast and light-weight (thanks to MPC-HC code!), with a lot of options. Very good use of system resources, video hardware acceleration implemented very well, usable on old computers (as MPC-HC!). It's used a lot in South Korea for PBS (Personal Broadcasting). Great configurability, smooth GUI, lots of external skins, the numbers of options can intimidate the average user, but everything works fine just with the default settings. BUT my advice is to use madVR as video renderer and Sanear as audio renderer. IMHO audio quality with Sanear Wasapi renderer is very good, articulate sound signature (similar to MPC-HC, much better than JRiver Media Center). Infact, MPC Audio renderer is the Sanear one implemented into the player. PotPlayer also has got a very good native support for online streaming services and videos, much better than MPC-HC + LAV Splitter + external youtube-dl. Fast opening, fast seeking, but some issues with Dailymotion videos (same for MPC-HC + internal LAV filters + external youtube-dl, no issues with MPC-BE + internal filters + internal webpage parser). VLC, from this point of view, remain unsurpassed (but the video and audio quality are poor). The internal splitter, video and audio decoder work very well, but LAV Filters are implemented in a more correct way respect to the standards. Possibility to use Avisynth and Vapoursynth scripts, implemented natively, without the help of FFDSHOW as for MPC-HC. p.s. Just a small but important tip. In the section Video - Color Spaces - YCbCr to RGB conversion use the 'Auto' function and not ITU-R BT.601. ATTENTION: as for November 2019, PotPlayer is bundled with adware, but You can skip it during the set up process. More important, it open two or three back-door internet connections to some korean (?) external server for telemetry functions, to send unknown infos about the home user. It's visible, for example, with the TCPView software made by the great Mark Russinovich - Sysinternals).

You can avoid any installation rubbish in Windows by adding the .7z extension to the download and unpacking with 7Zip. Just leave out the $0 and $PLUGINSDIR folders. This is not my standard player, but I just tried this and it works OK. MalwareBytes Premium didn't find anything untoward. Just an option to try.

It's always a shame when developers resort to these tactics. "Making money by causing misery to other people" I think is what they used to call PPI's. All sorts of deceptive tactics.

I've been using this product for years since VLC kept stuttering.

Had Duam provided a way to donate I would have been happy to, but resorting to these tactics has killed it for me. I've now uninstalled it off all 10 PCs and using MPC-HC. Would definately consider coming back to PotPlayer if they remove the dodgy addons

@yonta: Thanks man, you are right (it doesn't install the AV if you uncheck the "I have read..." box), but if you hadn't confirmed that, I wouldn't have tried to install it, as I had several bad experiences with antivirus programs that once installed, is extremely hard to uninstall them. On the other hand, Daum should've seen the "simple mistake" until now (it's released on 07/31), and fix it. Otherwise, I can suspect that it's not just a "simple mistake".

Unfortunately the capturing of subtitles doesn't work properly in this version.
In the former versions the red rectangle always corresponded its subtitle, and subtitles always came back to their position after capturing. In this version capturing the subtitles is quite unstable. I mean the red rectangle may be way above the subtitle on the upper edge of the screen, or at the next line below the subtitle. It's quite uncomfortable.

@Ladyday - It's not compulsory to update. Try disabling the auto-update option.
If a version is working for you and doing everything you expect it to, then stick with that version.

Personally, I'd rather have software that's constantly being developed/improved/having potential bugs ironed out, than one that is stagnant for months on end.

Best player I have ever used. It has a very high level of customization options, which is both its greatest advantage and its biggest weakness. I've tweaked lots of settings to my exact personal preference, but that was pure experimentation and I honestly couldn't understand half of what I was doing. That said, I switched to PotPlayer from VLC, and would never go back to VLC, precisely because I (after exhaustive testing) found the exact settings I had been looking for in PotPlayer, which VLC did not have.

When it comes to the overall software experience, I have yet to run into a single file that PotPlayer has failed to run, meaning I haven't had even the slightest bit of regret or worry about removing VLC due to fear of file incompatibility. The developers aren't lazy either, with updates on a regular basis. Also, as a final note, I'd like to add that there are several people in this thread who reported stutter during start-up. I had that issue too, and was waiting for an update to PotPlayer to fix it. However, I had apparently disabled driver updates to my NVIDIA graphics card. As soon as I updated to the newest version of NVIDIA graphics drivers, PotPlayer now starts instantly, no delay or stutter at all. To anyone reading this with that issue, try that :)

Long time happy user, lots of settings, changeable hotkeys, very light, portable, frequent updates. Cons: poor english help, you have to count on the forum(s) and power users to fine-tune it. Lately it developed a delay when exiting (to close the main window). Other than that, the best.

I also LOVE Potplayer. But yeah, the latest versions have been behaving weird.
When opening any video file there is a delay in my case, kinda stuttering of the timeglass/spinning wheel.
No problems exiting or any kind of freezes. I Have tried both x32 and x64. Same problem.

I LOVE PotPlayer, but as someone already mentioned the last few versions have been slow, in my case it's really slow to open my usual videos (short 10 min video tutorials). From 10 seconds to a minute, but today I had to force it to close a few times already.

PotPlayer is simply the best media player I've used on the Windows OS. It is for the person that wants full personalization. You can set hotkeys for any function imaginable. Use any codec, filter, etc. you want and plenty of skins are available for those who'd like it to look fancy (like me). The only negative thing (though not to me) is that there are so many options that it could overwhelm somebody who doesn't want to deal with it. It's still very functional even if you don't use the options, but if you're the type that changes an obscure preference, it could be hard to find. Other than that, it's awesome.

This is one of the best players I've tested, has the necessary codecs, has different rendering methods, its hardware acceleration works much better than the LAV codec, in addition to accounts that have small tools like the creation of thumbnails, record audio and video . almost perfect software, its interface can be something positive but at the same time negative since it is quite "difficult" to configure it since some configurations are only made in the contextual menu, its default skin is too robust for me, I would like something more similar to MPC HE, now there are certain options that I can not make them work, including the option "live" how does it work ?, chat? what is that? I thought it was an obsolete utility but in the changelogs I've seen that they continue to add functions to this "function".
For all this this program gets an 8/10 for those little things, easily can be arranged either by making a skin simple enough and make the most accessible settings, and it would not be a bad help file in English.

Potplayer is one of the best, though this recent update has some issues (at least for me). For whatever reason opening a movie file now (initially/first time after restart) it is extremely slow to open (sometimes takes like 10 seconds). Another random issue is when right clicking on the screen the menu/options list also takes a very long time to open initially. Really unsure what they did and I highly doubt it is my computer as I have a good system, but something is bogging it down on initial openings.

So, I want to suggest about subtitle included on "Video Recording", and I'm meaning for including all subtitles that are playing (like this https://i.snag.gy/t8jxNk.jpg), it's is pretty that PotP capturer not having such options, or even more like a small post-video editor, also make it possible to change color for individuals subs, ty so much, PotP still the best one out there for Windows.

Creators of this software are blessed and have real good taste on creating cool stuffs. C ya o/

I spent hours trying to improve VLC seeking speed (choppy AF) - no luck.
Switched to PotPlayer, played the same video file and it seeks like a GOD.

+Intuitive interface
+Everything perfect from installation (except double click that I switched in 2 sec from pause to fullscreen)
+Bonus points for removing the bottom seek menu from fullscren the MOMENT mouse hover is gone. A nice touch that doesn't treat you like you have Parkinson's disease.

audio didn't work
i downloaded the latest version which overwrote my original. big mistake
the latest version is giving me an error "requires xp sp3". there is no sp3 for xp x64, only sp2
so there's something wrong. latest version won't install, install has no audio. so i looked up the version number and by sheer luck found this site. it was horrible having to sift through all the detritus to finally find what i was looking for. the download was flawless. i reinstalled this version on top of itself, and checked to make sure all the support files were enabled, and it worked! yesh! but this project wasted my whole morning. i feel somewhat older; a feeling of loss, that i could have done something more productive

maybe potplayer intended droping support?
so I double-checked playback of webm files for each version after 1.7.625 - sadly this version was the last version to work correctly and play webm. all subsequent version crash immediately when trying to open webm files.

otherwise fantastic player and keep up the excellent work.

Pot player could be one of the best video players ever, but just too many bugs, and poor documentation, with almost zero support.
I still cannot simply sign in to Forum any more, will not accept simple my documented orig info, or password, p-player reset does not work in forum either. Tried re-registering, but keeps asking for registration code, but none given. So cannot post my hot video crossfade features requests or make new forum inquiries, but had never received any forum replies on my orig inquiries either, when forum access did work.
None of the pot player Email contacts or developers bother to reply to any inquiries or problems, and nothing really works smoothly with this player.
I have been using windows pcs, video editors and forums for many years, have never experienced so many problems,, and lack of support like even this latest potplayer program update, which again could be great, if not for all the headaches .

**As many are now using potplayer for their many video playlists, not just audio, Still Could not find any simple Video crossfade, or video fade out options, this feature needed mainly at end of video downloads and MP4 clips playlist, so do not have to use an addtl editor program,to edit and re-encode just to fade out video at end, instead of all cut or trimmed videos ending abrubtly, which looks terrible. Why no simple video crossfading options.
Cannot find any way at all to do this in Potplayer with even internal or external effects or plugins to crossfade video & audio. So all mp4 videos in potplayer video playlists, can transition automatically smoothly like similar video and audio programs/players.

**(One good thing is that pot player (does appear) to be at least updated somewhat regularly, just was hoping there was some preset options, so that all audio and video can play automatically in best or max quality at all times, (Auto removing or fixing video/audio problems after pot player analyzes all media played) so we do not have to keep tinkering and testing just to always play all video & audio in max quality, with little or no audio clipping or feedback .)

** Also Still trying to find any option in Potplayer, like similar players have, the option to save loaded Online youtube videos etc as MP4 to my PC or external drive.

**Why still no similarly equipped features for android with potplayer yet.

Again, even though it has great potential as a player, too many bugs, and poor documentation, with very poor support. So even though they do update it, and add new features, but this player is still missing a few superhot video features especially, and by potplayer developers just slapping together quick updates and new features, but without good documentation or support, it is not really making this player much better, with just more problems, but very little support.
I would much rather pay a few dollars , and have better documentation, and at least some working support, so do not keep wasting so much time trying tinker, and get pot player to work properly.
Hope they keep improving in the badly needed Video/audio enhancements and features though!
(Rated 2.8 out of 5 stars) for now.

The latest versions have a noticeable lag on starting up on my older laptop. I was using an older version (unsure which) but uninstalled it. I installed 1.6.52515 but now find that EVERY time I start a video I get a nag screen asking whether I want to update to the latest version.

Do I want to check every time or every week? Well never actually. There is a setting for this in Prefs>General. I set that to never but still every time I start Potplayer the same thing. It doesn't seem to save the setting.

This is NOT cute when the latest versions aren't ideal for you. Hopefully I can keep going back until I find a build which doesn't do this.

Playing any video file results in audio going off after about one second.

I have to re-select audio renderer to hear the sound. Something wrong I'm doing?

Have been using this product for over many years.

@cdburn: in addition to AllisOne's good advice, regarding your register prob you might try using another email adress (E.G. gmail.com).

Positive thing I noticed in recent versions, .pgs subs seem to play nicely by now. In previous versions they got stuck occasionaly. Switching to x64 version worked slightly better on that for me, by now seems all solved.

Post questions here: http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/353738-Potplayer-Generic-Current-issues-development-bugs

I've just checked both versions. Everything seems OK. All 4 internal/built-in audio codecs (FFmpegMinimum, dtsdecoderdll, OpenCodecUnity and FFmpeg) are working and external LAV as well. Do you download additional codecs at the end of installation (your firewall might block it)? Have you checked what splitters/codecs your player is using during playback? Is the Pass Through (S/PDIF, HDMI) for DTS disabled/enabled (depending on where you send the audio)?

I just still find the setup a little basic. Would be nice that in case of previous versions installed, this was detected during the setup so you don't have to select the shortcuts, file association, additional codecs, etc every time you upgrade.

@ Sputnik55: is there any particular reason you use 64 bit PotPlayer? (I'm sure you know you can use x32 apps on x64 OS). Wherever I go they advise to use x32 version and newest beta. PotPlayer x32 is updated much more often and I guess your x64 version informs you about those x32 updates.

Or you can try to do a clean install: uninstall PotPlayer, remove all folders from Program Files and Users - [Your profile] - AppData - Roaming - PotPlayerMini (+wherever else you'll find its files and folders). Just in case you can backup those folders somewhere else and Export Current Presets from Preferences window (be aware it will copy all foregoing errors). When doing a clean install you will need to set all the prefs anew.

PS. I don't think you'll find any PotPlayer developers here. You can message him - Kang here: ahahlive@hanmail.net and hope he answers :-)
And it's better to ask for help at videhelp forum, for example here: http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/353738-Potplay ... pment-bugs

@ Royalstar

Thank you for your suggestion, but I don't use Windows Firewall, I work with COMODO Firewall.

Also, there is no use to block the internet connection of Pot Player because it is not the internet connection which has to be blocked but the window which opens up to say that there is a new version available when 1) it is the latest version which is installed and 2) I expressly say to Pot Player not to check for updates in the Preferences.

Also, I have checked for an exe file which would belong to Pot Player and which would clearly indicate that it is used for the updates and I found none.

The update functionality seems to reside inside the PotPlayerMini64.exe file and it would really not be a good idea to block this one.

Do you know which exact exe file or else should be blocked ?

Thank you.

Each time I open up PotPlayer a window appears which is telling me that there is an update available.

First, I have the last version, so there is no need to tell me that there is a new version.

Second, in PotPlayer's Preferences, I have told PotPlayer to never automatically check for updates.

Because of these flaws, I have been obliged to install an old version of PotPlayer (v 1.6.47995) to avoid this problem.

Could someone from PotPlayer check this problem please ?

"ConverterCrazy
What I learned from a website of PotPlayer's Polish translator is:
(Google translator with a few corrections) It is associated with granting the certificate for PotPlayer by VeriSign. Therefore, at specified intervals CRL is checked online via Windows CryptoAPI.
CRL (Certificate Revocation List): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revocation_list
Without an Internet connection, PotPlayer will wait for a response from the Akamai network (CDN). So, do not reject calls from Akamai (try to change your firewall settings). I'm not sure if it's only reason that you have to wait those few / several seconds to turn on.

Certificate confirmation and expiration status:.
Right-click on PotPlayer.dll (.exe) file -> Properties -> Digital Signatures tab -> click Details -> click View certificate -> Details tab -> Extended error information
PotPlayer has now increased protection against adverse effects. Because of growing popularity of PotPlayer it becomes a victim of hacking and Some antiviruses notify that its files are suspicious/infected.
Original link: http://potplayer.pl/viewtopic.php?p=5263#p5263

A solutions proposed by one user (I'm not sure how it might influence Windows security in general) is:
Disabling CRL checking on Windows level proved to solve the problem of certificates:
Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> click Security -> uncheck Check for publisher's certificate revocation.
* please do this only after installing and running PotPlayer - Windows must at least once download/check certificate.
Now PP loads immediately.

@cicak: I've noticed the same with a few last betas. Thanks to Comodo Firewall warning I suspect the culprit might be PotPlayer's desire to connect to external IP: 23.43.75.27 (Akamai Technologies European from Holland). It's a new "feature" apart from a few "old" IPs that PotPlayer wants to talk to even if 'Auto check for updates' is set to Never. The old ones don't seem to affect PotPlayer that way.

For those who say new version (1.6.x) takes high cpu usage;

New version has turned off DXVA feature by default, so it doesn't use hardware acceleration to play your videos, and instead it uses your cpu for everything it does. To turn on DXVA goto:

Preferences > Filter Control > Video Decoder > Built-in codec/DXVA settings

and check the "Use DXVA" checkbox. Apply the change and close. It should be ok now.

@ Doomsday.a: try to play HD movies with Built-in Video Codec/Transform turned off (visible in 'Filters' among external codecs/splitters needed to play the video). For me it doubles up CPU usage when playing (Ultra)HD - h.264 (AVC) and h.265 (HEVC). Preferences - Filter Control - (go to the right) Built-in Video processing filter settings - Condition: Disable with the following conditions and choose the conditions: FourCC, Extension, Frame Rate, etc.

Did you download the Open codecs during installation? In the internal filters/decoders setting you have a few decoder to choose (OpenCodecUnity, FFmpeg, Libav). Or try external ones like LAV Filters.

Disregard the two posts below, I'm using a Windows 7 64 bit laptop with an i3 processor, and it barely uses any of my CPU playing 720p+ videos.

Further more setting up Madashi VR (MadVR) is beyond simple.

To set up video rendering madshi is very complicated. Madrv already installed and not open. In light alloy player is only madshi you click the option and it opens automatically.

I had to revert back to a previous version. Hopefully this version fixes that.

Great player though….

There's a problem with WarpSharp in PotPlayer x64 (Stable Version) , when I use it, the cpu is going to 100%.
PotPlayer x64 1.647450 -> Video Processing -> There aren't problems with Motion Blur and Deband and others, except with WarpSharp.

In version PotPlayer1.6.46586Upd, in WinXP, the option in Audio--> "Output Speakers" --> Same as input" doesn't work correctly. Normally in that way, having XP/Creative panel to 5.1 and actual 5.1 speakers and of course with a 5.1 video source(I have test videos), the output was 5.1, in this version mixes the surround speakers, and I have to manually set "Output Speakers" to "3/0/2+LFE - 5.1 channel" for it to work properly. Didn't test the last version (1.6.46599 Update - April 13 2014) yet.

@ TGB: You might disable internal filters [at least for HD-content], try LAV-Filters instead. Setting your preferred Sub/audio language in LAV-Splitter Settings works properly. I use built in filters for DVD-playback only, LAV Splitter/ decoder works like a charm even with untouched Bluray playback on a middle/lower class engine..

The subtitle download window doesn't allow us to order it by language, good if could do this and save that option... (and when i'm saving the sub it doesnt give me the movie folder first, this is pretty bad, since i have to find the folder everytime)

Also an ability to se multiple subtitles on the same screen, i actually only can do this by using filter vobsub auto-loading, i still don't understand what current multiple subtitle option does. I like to see another language sub and the original one, makes understanding easier for learning porpuses.

The last version in linux I can currently get working is 1.5.42994. After that they put in a second audio decoder in the code and it crashes it even if disabled.

I posted part of the instructions to install below. Here are the last steps:

Just an addendum to my previous post. A couple steps I missed:

4. Copy mscoree.dll and streamci.dll from an original Windows installation to /home/*user*/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32.

On crossover it is in a subdirectory in your bottle directory.

Working versions are:

mscoree.dll version 1.1.4322.573
streamci.dll version 5.1.2600.0

5. Download DirectX9 november release from here. Extract it on a new folder.

Go to that folder and execute DXSETUP.EXE

On crossover you can just install it to that directory

(by double click on it or by using the command wine DXSETUP.EXE).

To test DX installation, go to /home/*user*/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and execute dxdiag to test the 2D and 3D).

6. I also installed Adobe Flash Player 11 for Internet Explorer. This is available in Crossover but I imagine you could do this manually just as well.

7. Install Dirac codec in the bottle you have installed Potplayer in.

8. You should install PotPlayer1.5.44465.EXE first and then update it with PotPlayer1.5.42994Upd.EXE. Both are available at:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PotPlayer/old-versions#download

If I missed any steps please post a follow-up

Great player, but at the moment its Built-in Video Codec/Transform when turned on (visible in 'Filters' among external codecs/splitters needed to play the video), doubles up CPU usage when playing UltraHD (4K) h.264 (AVC) and h.265 (HEVC). They all are in developmental state, so hopefully it will be fixed soon.

@DanRo - I can play your .ogg stream (Radio Infinit) using internal and external codecs (LAV). I use PotPlayer ver. 1.5.44981 x86 Dev Beta. First update PotPlayer (new one has more codecs to set up manually). Check if your firewall isn't blocking this specific stream address. If you use for example PeerBlock check it as well (It blocked the stream on my computer). The codec used in your .ogg container is Vorbis, so check Vorbis in Audio Codecs (but go via Preferences and scroll down to Vorbis in that section. If you go via right click - Filters - Manage Codecs|Filters you can't scroll and see the whole list). Last try - in LAV Audio Decoder - Formats double check if Vorbis is ticked.

This video player is the true definition of All-In-One operation! It's amazing because this player is only known for those who seek the best rather than advertising.

Although it isn't open source it's full functionality shows that it implements the best and which is why it can't be open source (understandable).

Besides most players in which you have to force/block filters, PotPlayer allows you to specifically choose what filters/splitters you want to use.

The only thing I see an average user not liking this program is it has TOO much to offer while MPC-HC is very minimalistic as possible (straight forward).

I continue to use this because I now stream many of my content and this player shows the loading bar! Only if MPC-HC was able to do that i'll jump right on over but this player does it at best.

My only greatest, absolute concern for this player is the option to "disable all" or "choose all" in selecting filters. Otherwise you have to manually select what you want per codec it's HASSLE-SOME!

I was trying to get KMPlayer working on wine using outdated instructions. While I wasn't successful, I did manage to install Potplayer (the new KMPlayer so to speak) using the same method.

To be more precise, I use Crossover Linux, but imagine Wine, playonlinux, winetricks, etc. could get it going.

So to get it going:

1. Install Wine/Crossover/whatever (I used the latest version of Crossover for this).

2. Type winecfg to create the .wine folder.

The Wine config window appears. Select Windows 2000 OS. Now, configure audio. In Libraries tab, set "d3d8" to builtin, and also override quartz.dll. Close the Wine config by clicking on "OK" button.

3. Go to /home/*user*/.wine/ and open user.reg

Search for [Software\\Wine\\DllOverrides] section and copy below the following list:
"d3d8"="builtin"

Awesome options to tinker with. Supports CUDA, 3d, chapter skipping, etc...

Cons: While resizing to full-screen while the main is minimized via taskbar preview button, the window goes offscreen after coming out of full-screen.
Does not output analog audio to a second sound card (only spdif).
No English support forum.

Requests: 2nd (or 3rd) sound card support for directsound (like in kmp) .
Ability to use madvr for 3d videos.
Manual playlist advance i.e. play just one file out of many in the playlist and stop or close file after that.

And I contacted them and already got a reply saying they will fix both of my video playback issues,

The e mail address again is ahahlive@hanmail.net and they will reply in English :)

gate1975mim: Your problem is an easy one,,the codec Id isom as well as the video codec Id mp42 are the issues that will give media players alot of problems playing,,they are really non standard codecs. If I had that file and I really wanted to keep it I would either rencode it to a more standard type video file that all players will play like mp4/avc1/aac or mkv/x264/ac3 or xvid/avi/mp3 and if couldnt do that I would just dump it and look for a more compliant file..Honestly I cant remember seeing those codec Ids together in one video file...good luck...;)~

Suggestion: Make the playlist/albums searchable like VLC

as in, when you type characters it narrows the playlist/album down based on what you typed

@bartslol

« @Plx start in default aspect ratio isn't bug, do it as you want and export your preset/settings, so you don't have to configure it every time you install »

What I meant is that ‘Keep aspect ratio (recommended)’ should be the default, and if not the ‘(recommended)’ should be removed.

« It do opens simmilar files when exists a similar named file on the same folder, you must try a reinstall »

The function doesn’t work well, it’s very random. It doesn’t consider a list of files with numerically ordered as always similar for instance. Try with these filenames if you are not convinced (tracks of the album The Dark Side of The Moon, Pink Floyd):
01-speak_to_me.flac
02-breathe.flac
03-on_the_run.flac
04-time.flac
05-the_great_gig_in_the_sky.flac
06-money.flac
07-us_and_them.flac
08-any_colour_you_like.flac
09-brain_damage.flac
10-eclipse.flac
Each track is opened independentely, except for track 3 and track 8 which are detected by Potplayer as similar, how consistent!

« detect durations won't work for online streaming, always worked for me in other formats »

I didn’t talk about right-click–Detect durations in the playlist, but about the playlist setting ‘Auto detect file durations’, please read carefully.

« Man are you crazy!
Suggest stuffs for it, instead of reporting errors where there is no one »

I wrote just before my last post:

The only 2 big things that are missing for being used as default audio player are:
— gapless AUDIO playback (I can’t understand why there is gapless video but not audio.);
— display of tags (The main window displays the filename instead.)

So please read carefully.

I would like to capture frames from the video. However, when I chose the PNG picture-format, the color space is not the same as I see on the screen. (therefore the quality is much worse) The capture in JPG and BMP formats are in the correct color space.

Can you solve the PNG wrong color space problem?

To Daum / Potplayer developer - have you considered setting up a forum for Potplayer to be discussed?

There are many free hosted phpBB forum providers such as www.phpbb3now.com - Otherwise perhaps a even a user-run forum could be created if developer would be willing to read it every now and then.

The main problem is the Daum site is all in Korean. There is no english place to discuss or give feedback to developer. But there are many English users! Please set up a forum as it would be good for the software and community as a whole.

Is it possible to save bookmarks for different videos. For example, suppose you are watching a video, save a few bookmarks, load another video, save a few bookmarks, you decide to go to a bookmark for the second video, the video is loaded and resumes at that bookmark ? From my experiences bookmarks are only saved for one video, actually, come to think of it, it may save for multiple bookmarks, but it doesn't allow me to categorize the bookmarks per video.

Guys, would be great if we could reach the developers to give them a few suggestions... Do you know how?

For instance, the default skins included are a complete joke... They make the player look cheap, outdated and ugly. They don't include a single "acceptable" skin! Check two simple I've been using:

http://i2.minus.com/iUS1wSrb1dwge.png
http://i1.minus.com/ibcSmg5uR5QKDR.png

These 2 are both light and simple; acceptable at the very least. Both have Windows Native menu design... I'm using the normal Segoe UI Regular 9px and I've got piece of mind.

Otherwise, great player. Additionally, I can confirm when I close the player, it hangs for 4-5 seconds, but this happens only on x86 version. With the x64 you don't face the same hanging. Just keep it in mind.

Pros ¬¬¬
- Really good rendering quality for both a/v, I've never seen like that b4, for EVR(amazing) or even in Automatic option, so fast and responsible, even in my Celeron 1.8
- Changing skin color automatically is so cool.
- Man, you should add support 2 download from OpenSubtitles.org's ISDB, seems like you forgot that coz it has so good subs options. It could suggest to look for srt in db if there is no one. Subs over VMR, I can easily set bellow the movie. Appreciated.

Cons ¬¬¬
- I couldn't export profile setting to live pp, real bad thing since I can do it easily in mpc-hc.
- It doesnt supports MiniLyrics, even if I select Minilyrics opt in Vis, but it does with .lrc files. Lyrics support is biggest miss in most of known audio players. And the one built-in on JeAudio does't work anymore. It would be cool if the lyrics changes by itself when listening from radios stations like 181.fm, 181 should come with the next versions.
- Automatic video rendering, it's causing too much slow, I thought each instance was free and independent of each other (about using built-in plugins at the same time) or is it some kind o bug. I can't open them both with same quality and the subs becomes different.
- No way to see 2 or more subtitles like in JetAudio, currently I can do that only by adding VobSub filter (I do this in other some hard way, opening the Sub Explorer during playing, but I lost many scenes)

Suggestions ¬¬¬
- Doesn't have option to see YouTube videos just copying url address, u have to get the full direct link, it could be like smplayer w/ a panel for searching. Such a miss 4 mpc 2.
- We could save settings, like playlists and everything in new Live PotPlayer, after login.
- It would be great to play the file in current playlist direct to another instance, a right click and then >>Open in another ppm. I have movie and audio/radios playlists aside of each other, cool if if I could open them separately, easy like that.

I hope you consider my add here, because it comes from the heart, for such a great work you've done. I just read the PP history, so much progress since the first version.

Hi everyone,

I've been using PotPlayer for some time now and I love it except for one small flaw that bugs me. When I double click a file it opens in a new playlist which is ok, but the playlist I last opened doesn't start with the last file I played anymore but from the beginning. The other playlists are not affected by this, and they will open with the file that was last played.
Can anyone help me with this?

@leecherman - Thank you. I tried it and can confirm that when I went back down to v1.5.36421, the application closes immediately (properly) again. On the same WinXP SP3 x86 machine - the newer versions hang for between 3-10 seconds on the taskbar before closing.

Also, I recently tried KMPlayer (this author's former project) and PotPlayer is much better. KMPlayer was taking 45% CPU whereas PotPlayer takes 15% CPU for the same files playing at same resolution.

If only the author can investigate what happened in the closing script after v1.5.36421. Someone please inform the author of this closing bug in his native language (Korean).

To be better it needs to have multi-subs support, additional VSync Renderers like mpc-hc, and the option to dl subtitle from opensubtitles isdb. And also option to download and show lyrics (LRC), or some way to integrate it with MiniLyrics. I'm using the beta version from videohelp website, because it's in english.

I couldn't configure it to use external "ffdshow dxva", in that way it shows 2 subtitles on the same movie.

I really like it for audio/streaming, its equalizer, the speed,, so I moved all formats into it instead of mpc-hc, that I've used for a long time because of dxva, but the quality and speed here is supreme, much over than VLC or JetAudio, just need some adjusts to make it perfect.

I used to use KMPlayer which was excellent and was my default media player, but that became aged after the dev stopped developing it. Then PotPlayer came along from the same dev as KMPlayer and again its excellent, it took a little while to learn my way around it as it differed slightly to KMPlayer but once i had it then became my new default player.

It has always served me well and plays anything i play at it and also is easily configured to take advantage of DXVA which is a must when playing 1080p vids as the GPU can take on the load instead of the CPU. It comes with all the codecs / filters built in which ive never had the need to use others, the same goes with splitters which are good but i prefer Haali splitter. After installing Haali its a breeze to configure PotPlayer to use it.

I have always recommended PotPlayer to anyone who asks me whats the best app to play media with and will most likely always will as it has frequent updates.

So if ur in the process of finding a new or replacement media player i cant recommend PotPlayer enough. I Highly recommend PotPlayer to anyone looking for a complete standalone media player, whether you are a beginner or advanced PC user PotPlayer will accommodate your needs.

A great media player!

Can't disagree that it's probably the 2nd best player for all media.

It will never be the best as it can't display 2nd subtitles.
The old KM Player which is v1439 that I'm currently using with LAV filters is and will be the author's best ever work. Displaying the 2nd subtitles on top/bottom of the video is important as we fancy watching non English videos or English videos with small parts of foreign audio in it.As one of my family is hearing impaired, displaying English subs is almost a necessity.

Are there any other players out there that can do this for MKV?

I doubt it.

Update: Having been using 1.5.34665 x64 for a while now, I have found...

- Sped-up plackback (like 1.3x) still adds an annoying reverb to the sound.

- When playing a .wtv file that is a digital-tv recording by Windows Media Center, and there are two audio tracks #0 and #1, it always selects the #1 track (center only) instead of the #0 track (full 5.1).

- It's digital-tv support is still lacking. While it does work, the channel numbers are completely out of whack, and the app crashes itself (no Windows error, it's its own crash dialog) when it is nearly done a channel autoscan. Oh well.

- Oh, and there's no beta updates for the x64!

Having grown increasingly frustrated with MPC-HC (and some "BE" variant of it) when it could not play a seemingly normal .mp4 that Avidemux would load and play; and hating how VLC just doesn't seem to use acceleration properly (making it impossible to watch hd-tv recordings); I decided to give the great PotPlayer a try again (last time was about a little over a year ago).

It definitely works better for me now (some quirks are gone), and it plays the file the other 2 couldn't. It has all the customizable amazing features I like to be able to control, and works very well so far. I don't know if the tv card support works properly yet, may try that eventually.

This is arguably THE BEST player in the known UNIVERSE. The author is the one who created KMPlayer, after PANDORA took KMPlayer, he left the development of KMPlayer (no wonder why KMPlayer SUCKS now) and created PotPlayer. I gave it a 9, only because it takes a little effort to set it right for your needs. Other than that it's PHENOMENAL. Here, just compare this too shots I've taken with KMPlayer and PotPlayer rendering a anamorphic MKV.

KMPlayer: http://www.img4up.com/up2/52533546193347013437.png

As you can see, it failed to recognize the correct aspect ratio and look at the colors and how washed out they are.

See, it recognized the correct aspect ratio and the colors are gorgeous.

*I'd like to re-write my comment, since, the previous had been cut unexpectedly.

This player is using the lowest resources I've ever seen! For instance, for an MKV 720p file it uses less than 3% CPU utilization ( i5 2500 @1.6Ghz - idle mode ) and less than 3% GPU utilization ( AMD7950 @501Mhz - Video Mode )! It's amazingly resources-friendly.

One problem I have; I can't find how to make it stop playing all files in a playlist... I'd like to play one file and then stop. My inefficient "workaround" is to: "Remove -> Remove All Unselected Items". I'd appreciate a little help!

Also, I'd really like a fully Windows native Theme. Currently it has an old glossy style on the main window and an older theme on the options window. It's looks a bit messy.

Anyway; Great player overall.

After being a Media Player diehard for years, I finally switched all video playback to PotPlayer. Frankly it plays everything, even the videos that play on VLC but not Gom and MPC-HC but not VLC, etc. I did have to do a litle customizing to keep the screen size constant, the aspect ration the same and several other settings but PotPlayer has so many settings that can be set and is rather easy to set up, no matter what you may wish. Now I can play ALL my test videos with one player and still get subtitles in VOB, sub/idx, SSA/ASS, SRT, external with same name, DVB and Teletext besides. I love it.

Works very well - I would like to warn people, though. DL it by clicking on "Download from our site (direct link)" and NOT by going to the maker's home page. If you go there, you'll get a Korean-language installer with no English option that will also install bloatware on your system. Make sure you get the installer that's in English!

Only 2 words to describe the player
"BEST PLAYER".
Nothing else needs to be said.

I do have a request for a new feature
In the new updated version of VLC player they included one new feature i.e. "SUBTITLE SPEED" by which we can change the fps speed of the subtitles.
I would like to see same feature (or ADVANCED), if possible, in DAUM POTPLYAER.

thanking you in advance.

Good player that includes Blu-Ray playback but the drawback for me is the lack of remote functionality. MPC-HC is compatible with the Microsoft remote and it also plays Blu-Ray so that is still the preferred player. Also none of these players can play Microsoft Recorded TV files with audio and subtitles so you still need WMP.

I tried using this for dvd's last night and the playback is perfect but I'm afraid I'm having the same issue as another comment posted. I can't get rid of subtitles. They just stay on. If I try closed caption, both sets are on simultaneously. I tried setting the splitter with LAV or Haali and both play fine but the subtitles don't even show they are there. I think maybe it's a setting I'm not getting right but I wish it was a simple as MPC HC where you just load it up and the default subs are off.

MKV and BR playback are perfect. No issues there.

The procedure you describe did NOT work in the last versions. Just the latest version from Feb 8th seems to handle the subtitles somehow, but still with major drawbacks! It shows the subtitle track even if it is not the "default" track, doesn't recognize and auto-enable forced subtitle tracks, doesn't include a "no subtitle" in the cycling with ALT-L, etc. It's unusable! With Haali Media Splitter it works fine though.

Unfortunately, the internal source/splitter for Matroska files (mkv) does not seem to support selecting the subtitle track. The player does display the default subtitles, but it's impossible to switch to another subtitle stream. The only work-around seems to be to install another splitter, like Haali Media Splitter. A bit inconvenient though, having to do this. But still a great player!

Hi
First I want to say this is the best player on the net today.& I tested all players around.
I have A Sony Handycam HDR-XR500E Video Camera.
When I play HD m2ts files connecting the camera direct to TV I can watch all my recorded & filmed sections continuously & smoothly with no pouses between the sections and parts.
When I copied my recorded video to my Hard Disk and play them from my Hard Disk,
the player pauses between each sector for 1 second with A black frame, which is very annoying.
I Must say that the PotPlayer does the shortest pouses, compare to any other players around.
I appeal to the PotPlayer Auther,Can You Please Fix It?
I Think you developed the best player around today & you can make it even better.

Out of frustration I decided to try this little player and it's just amazing at the HD video it does. It just works. I have some old HD m2ts files from a vacation lyin around on an external drive and MPC HC did the same thing..froze up. Played them in Pot Player and voila!!!! No problems. I was a fan of Media Player Classic Home Cinema but when HD videos came along I found that it would freeze and I could not play them properly with it without making the MPC-HC window much smaller. My PC is a few years old but I have quite a powerful system.

PotPlayer is the best media player I have ever used! It plays HD video content smoothly without any problems and thats in fullscreen. The GUI is smart and you can choose plenty of different skins for it. It plays nearly every video format you throw at it and works straight out the box. There are lots and lots of advanced options you can tweak if you know what your doing, if not leave them with the "Recommended" default settings.

Even if you are happy with your current media player, give PotPlayer a try out I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Recommended!

This is a cool player with briliant costomizational options.

The video/audio playback smooth and the quality is flawless.

One of the key features include, marking of already played files. This is only supportd in only some skins. I would have preffered it on all of them...

I would also like to request, blu-ray menu support and sterioscopic 3D movie support and convertability.
It would also be really good if all the skins (the ones that come in skin packs) and if all the windows were translated to english.

PotPlayer is the best player around I have found in a long time, it's like a combination of 'Media Player Classic Home Cinema' and 'VLC media player' but with an actual modern look and feel. All the techy settings are there (like MPC) and more, and it has some special features (like VLC) such as speed-up playback with adjusted audio pitch.

The only problems I have with PotPlayer so far are:
- The speed-up playback with adjusted audio pitch: The audio sounds normal for the most part except it has like a reverb effect added for some reason. VLC's feature for this sounds completely normal.
- PotPlayer's TV card support actually works compared to MPC and VLC (both of which never did for mine), but it won't display a picture at all for the analog tuner (audio works), and it doesn't change channels correctly for the digital tuner (it did fine in one session but can't get it to again).

Really good Player for playing Anime.

but still have problem's with font size & style
PotPlayers settings forces its font size & style
on SSA/ASS subtitles.
I tried every setting change to prevent that.
I want Potplayer to use/adapt
SSA/ASS built-in subtitle fonts, font size, style & settings.
Instead of forcefully using font & its size set in Preferences.

Only SRT & UTF subtitle should use font settings in Preferences.
Its annoying to re-set font size everytime.
If My subtitle is UTF i set font size to 24
but when subtitle is SSA/ASS text becomes too small to read
resulting me to re-set font size to 36.

Vobsub works fine.

Except these problems
overall its a great Player :)
lot better than vlc

The interface is cleaner than KMPlayer and the settings dialog allow the user to customize the player to his/her liking. Has plethora of useful features. I've been using this program for about 2 weeks now and have had virtually no issues, each revision has become more and more stable. I have stopped using KMPlayer and find this too be nearly identical (which it should be since it's the same author) only laid out a little neater; if not a little different as well.
I was not expecting to be blown away by it, and I'm not but for it's core functionality as an all in one player - that is very configurable - it's quite good and certainly faster on startup than KMPPlayer.

Disappointing replacement for The KM Player (same author). While it seems to play most formats, it lacks simple things like 100% zoom. It also changes the IE homepage to a Korean search engine, and attempts to alter the base search engine as well, all without asking permission first. To me, that is basically spyware behaviour.

Not quite there yet. Did not preserve the aspect ratio. And unlike KMPlayer I could not find any settings to change that. But it handled the avchd mp4 videos on my ancient computer with minimal stutter than the dozen other players I have tried so far.

I will wait for the next release.

This Player is a typical ALL-In-One-Player.
I always wanted a player like this and this one is definitely one of the best of all (vlc, kmp ["old version" of this player), mpc with ffdshow, smplayer and all other).

But the codecs are not the best and all of them have some problems, e.g. they don't decode H.264 in mov-Container properly (e.g. Clips from EOS 5D Mark II [but vlc can, but has DVD-problems]).

I like it, but don't expect too much from this player and all similar. Also PowerDVD 10 Ultra isn't my 100%-choice.

But as an Audio-Player I like AIMP very much. Try it :)
