I bought this writer on sale at Fry's for around $90 a month ago. I haven't had any problems with it so far, I have burned over 25 discs and I only had one burn fail(I dont know if it was the writer or the media) but I tried burning the same DVD right after and it burned fine.
I know there are better writers out there, but I think considering the cost, this writer is decent.
I'm still deciding if I should keep it or not, after reading all these other comments.
