Closer to Perfection — Neat Video 5 is here!
May 7, 2019

If you shoot video, like us, you shoot for perfection and the quest is never-ending! Every new version of Neat Video brings us closer to the ideal of noise-free video. Which is why we’re excited to announce the launch of Neat Video 5 — the fastest, most powerful and most user-friendly version of Neat Video yet.

Let’s take a quick look at the new features, tools and improvements.

What's New in Neat Video 5?
Neat Video has been given an overhaul to improve its performance while adding new visual feedback features and adjustable generic profiles helping to achieve great results easier and faster.

Significant Speed Improvements
The Neat Video 5's noise reduction engine is more efficient and makes better use of the available processing power. As a result, Neat Video processes video frames faster across the board, with up to 3.5 times speed improvement on certain systems. Actual speedup depends on CPU, GPU and OS used:

CPU-based processing
Up to 1.5x faster
GPU-based processing

Windows and Linux

1 GPU: Up to 3.5x faster (2.2x average)
2 GPUs: Up to 2x faster (1.6x average)
MacOS

1 GPU: Up to 2x faster (1.6x average)
2 GPUs: Up to 2x faster (1.7x average)
As measured in Neat Video 5 running with the filter settings matching those of Neat Video 4.

For more benchmarks and more hardware-specific details, check out history of changes.

You can quickly check the speed achievable by Neat Video 5 on your computer by downloading and running NeatBench 5.

Cleaner, Crisper Video
Neat Video 5 has improved the way frames are analysed and processed, which has resulted in a general improvement of noise reduction quality. Neat Video 5 also adds some powerful new features to deal with common imperfections in video.

Flicker reduction
Flicker is a distracting repeated change of brightness. Neat Video 5 includes new advanced flicker filters that can detect and reduce this problem for a more consistent look.

Jitter reduction (jitter of details)
Jitter of details is the distracting trembling of the objects in the scene seemingly distorted by heat haze. This problem is usually caused by video compression. Neat Video 5’s jitter filter detects and combats this effect to create smoother, more natural video.

Improved noise reduction
Reducing digital noise and film grain can be significantly complicated by presence of other imperfections such as flicker and jitter of details. Neat Video 5 uses its new flicker- and jitter-related tools to take into account and where possible reduce those imperfections to make the reduction of regular random noise and grain more accurate. All that together helps to eliminate more noise and retain more details than ever before.

Improved sharpening
Neat Video 5 adds new controls and makes improvements to the already sophisticated sharpening tool. It has been further refined to help users give their clips more definition and bring out the details without the features becoming unnatural or over-processed.

Improved Dust and Scratches filter
Dust and scratches are unwanted contaminations often found on archive film. Detection of those contaminations may be complicated by other imperfections such as flicker also often found in film-based video. The new flicker reduction tools of Neat Video 5 work together with the Dust and Scratches filter. Their synergy allows to identify and eliminate dust and scratches even more proficiently.
More User-Friendly than Ever
The Neat Video team has spent a great deal of time and effort to help users achieve better results easier and faster. As a result, Neat Video 5 has introduced several new features that make the plug-in more user-friendly and efficient.

Easier profiling
Neat Video 5 automatically obtains a better noise sample by using a larger number of frames for analysis — leading to more accurate noise profiles.

Adjustable generic profiles
Creating an accurate noise profile is the first step in quality noise reduction. Where possible, it’s best to build a noise profile using the very clip that needs to be denoised. Since this is not always possible, Neat Video 5 has introduced adjustable generic profiles to help you create a noise profile when the actual clip contains no suitable areas for analysis. This feature offers a good starting point and allows to easily tune the profile to more closely match the actual noise in the clip you’re working with.

New visual feedback tools
Neat Video 5 includes new visual feedback tools helping to adjust filter settings and achieve the best visual results. Specialized visual representations help to tune the amount of filtration applied. New masks help to find the areas that do not receive sufficient treatment.

New playback features
Want to see how the noise reduction results will look like in action? You can! With a new playback feature, Neat Video 5 gives you a live view of the final result directly in plug-in window. Allowing you to experiment and make changes before applying your final settings.

Premium Noise Reduction and Sharpening

The Best Noise-Reduction Algorithms in the Industry
Neat Video’s noise reduction algorithms surpass the quality of all classic noise reduction methods — even relatively new wavelet-based methods. Neat Video’s more advanced, more efficient approach allows it to draw a clearer distinction between random noise and details in video data, enabling it to reduce more noise and better preserve true details.

Advanced Temporal Noise Filter
Neat Video’s advanced temporal noise filter analyzes and compares a range of consecutive frames in order to gain as much information as possible. This allows the filter to more accurately distinguish between noise and detail in order to reduce noise and artifacts.

Sophisticated Spatial Noise Filter
The spatial noise filter reduces noise elements even further on a frame-by-frame basis across a range of frequencies and color channels.

Specialized Dust and Scratches Filter
In addition, Neat Video features a filter that targets specific imperfections such as film scratches, film dust, impulse interference and similar defects. This filter can also treat corrupted scan lines, spots, dots, and other video maladies.

Slow Shutter Mode
This mode reduces noise in clips containing repeated frames such as those shot in “slow shutter” or “night mode”. It also improves clips that have had their frame rates artificially increased.

Artifact Removal Filter
Digital artifacts such as impulse noise created by video compression are treated by this filter. In addition, it also addresses dots and small lines that may be not fully removed by Neat Video’s regular noise filters.

Adaptive Filtration
This feature automatically adjusts the noise filter in situations where noise properties are changing in different parts of a video clip — ensuring more accurate noise-reduction.

Smart Sharpening
The intelligent sharpening filter takes advantage of Neat Video’s noise profiling techniques to sharpen the picture without amplifying noise. Neat Video sharpening has a halo-free mode.

Customizable Noise Filter Settings
Neat Video's filter is highly adjustable. While its default settings deliver good results, it also offers near complete control over each noise filtration setting. This allows you to fine-tune the noise reduction parameters to your exact requirements.
Intuitive Noise Profiling

Device Noise Profiles
Neat Video generates and utilizes device-specific noise profiles. These are reusable analyses of the noise characteristics of different devices in different recording modes. Thanks to these noise profiles, Neat Video knows exactly what type of noise it is encountering in a particular clip regardless of the source or mode of capture. Armed with this information the program is able to distinguish noise from details and achieve more accurate noise-reduction results.

Auto Profile Feature
Neat Video’s Auto Profile tool automatically examines the content of a clip and builds a custom noise profile specifically for it. This is extremely accurate, however it is possible to override it and use semi-automatic or manual noise analysis methods if preferred.

Profile Viewer and Profile Quality Indicators
Building and using good profiles is the most important step to ensure quality noise reduction. The Profile Viewer provides detailed information about the noise sample and the measured noise levels. The profile indicators help determine if a profile was accurately built and fine-tuned.
Instant Visual Feedback

Immediate Preview
Neat Video offers a built-in preview that allows you to view results and adjust the filter settings to optimize performance.

Multiple Preview Modes
You can manually select an area of interest for preview as well as evaluate filtration results separately for each channel and frequency component.
Comprehensive Host Integration

High-Bitdepth Rendering
Neat Video takes advantage of the full power of modern video processing applications, offering high-bitdepth rendering in programs that support it. These applications include After Effects, Premiere, Final Cut, Motion, Vegas Pro, AVX hosts and OpenFX hosts.

Supported by Most Video Editing Platforms
Neat Video works with most of the current video editing applications in use by both professional and consumer video editors.

Neat Video plug-ins work as regular video filters. They can apply noise reduction and sharpening exactly where it is required: in a chosen layer of an After Effects composition, in a chosen clip of a Premiere sequence, in a chosen track in Vegas, etc.

Click here to explore the full list of compatible software and system requirements.

Supports All Frame Sizes

The Demo Edition supports up to 1280x720 pixels (VCD, SD, DVD, HDV 720p) with a watermark added.
Excellent Hardware Optimization

GPU Acceleration
Got a powerful graphics card? Neat Video enables GPU acceleration to speed up processing and cut down on render times. Neat Video supports most CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPUs and a large number of OpenCL-capable AMD video cards.

Multi-Core, Multi-CPU and Multi-GPU Hardware Functionality
Neat Video is engineered to make the best use of the available hardware present in your system. It is optimized for use on multi-core, multi-CPU and multi-GPU systems. In addition, Neat Video supports the use of multiple graphics cards and multiple CPU cores simultaneously to deliver the best filtration speed possible.

Works with All Video File Formats
Neat Video is able to process any video format that is supported by your editing application including AVI, MPEG, MOV, WMV and many more. In other words, if your editing platform is able to open a video file, Neat Video will be able to apply noise reduction to that clip.

Works wonders on old TV shows, but it is slow. I used it a sample clip of a 60s soap opera and out various programs it gave me the best result.

Granted it took nearly 10 hours (2 passes) It played very smooth and clear

Review by craigarta on Nov 18, 2009 Version: 2.5 OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 8/10 Functionality: 8/10 Value for money: 8/10 Overall: 8/10

On my simple Core2Duo with 2 GB it works with Virtualdub at about 4 FPS (so it takes app. 6 times the len of the film to render it).

The quality after some tests is excellent, much better then for example the denoiser in Magix Video deluxe or the virtual dub one. NEAT seems to know the job from their famous photo version.

You must be careful in combining the filter with others in the same run, a combination with the contrast/saturation filter gives me a blue video.

If I find out how to let Virtual dub directly produce MPG´s I will buy the full version.
(Not a problem of NEAT, of course)

I use the Virtualdub version.
It is slow as hell. Even on an iCore7.
And you need to test a lot to find out how it works.

But it's the best filter you can have for video noise. Analogue, Digital, name it. A must have.
