| I bought this DVD burner and installed it on my PC (HP workstation xw4100 , 2.0 GHz CPU, 512 MB Memory). Even though I can use this DVD burner, but I am dissappointed for the following reasons: (1). Slow writing speed: Usually I can only have 0.4-0.8 x speed for CD-R media, far less than the 16 x advertised. (2). Format Isuues: I used Nero Express to make some DVDs, I found they can not be read by some DVD ROM, such as my Dell Dimension 4100's NEC DV 5700A DVD/CD ROM . While DVD made by my friend using other DVD burner can be read by it. Thus I don't want to recommend this product. Checking the cnet.com for DVD burner review to buy another one. | i purchased 2 of these drives from Office Depot, one drive i got is a OEM version with the "G" firmware and the other one is a retail version of the BENQ 1620 with the "B" firmware. according the the BENQ forum at cdfreaks.com the only difference is the "G" firmware is for OEM drives and the "B" is for retail drives. both firmwares are equal and not different. you can check out the BENQ FORUM at cdfreaks.com if you want to flash the OEM drive from "G" firmware to "B" firmware. i did not cross flash my "G" drive since i feel there is no need to. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92 i have no problems with my 2 drives. i like the fact it has automatic bitsetting for dvd+r media and there was no need for a hack firmware to enable it. BENQ has frequent firmware updates for their drives. it burns flawlessly with dvd+r 8x taiyo yuden, 8x maxell and 8x sony media. the total price i paid for both drives was $86.00 after price matching and mail in rebates. i would highly recommend this drive as it has gotten rave reviews from cdfreaks.com and cdrlabs.com. | I purchased this drive from Office Depot with the rebate and a business coupon for a really good price. I have returned one after struggling for 24 hours with it and been given another one. Mine is the Benq DW1620-OC1 with G7C9. I considered flashing with the better firmware but no one has mentioned the prob I have been having. The drive does not read or write ANY dvd's. It states that there is no disk in the drive, period. It won't read a store bought movie or a burned dvd or anything. Is this a firmware problem? I don't want to void a warranty on something that is bad and needs to be returned as not probable as that sounds. I have an older Benq 4x DVD+RW drive that works perfectly and still does when I put it back in or have it in the system at the same time. I have tried every configuration Master, Slave, Alone, you name it, the new drive will not read DVD's at all. I have a P4 2.0ghz proc WinXPpro 1gb ram, DMA enabled yada yada yada. The whole thing runs like a champ. This is the first time I have had this bad of a problem. Anyone know what the deal is? I'm having trouble believing this is a 2nd bad drive but I've checked everything. Updated Nero also so it's good to go but no dvd player, reader, writer - software or the computer itself can detect a dvd in the drive, blank or otherwise. Thanks for any help you can throw my way. | I got this burner at Staples a few weeks ago for $39 (after rebate). I also got the Teon 8X dvd-r's that were on sale then. This is my first dvd burner so I can't really compare it to anything except to say that I'm satisfied, especially at the low price I paid. I checked and found it to be made by BTC so I used the live update to download and flash it to the latest BTC firmware (originally AO79, now A17J). The IOMagic site(www.iomagic.com/firmware/firmwaredownload.html) didn't show any updates for this model. Anyway, all the dvd's that I burned are good except for one which played but had errors. | I read the comments from eddiesocrazy and tried the link to flash my burner, but the flash program from benQ gave an error of "Drive not support". From what I can tell, unless I can flash my burner to look like a benQ drive I'm stuck, b/c I tried using the tool to check out the blank media so I don't end up with a coaster and it said that it's for benQ drives only. | I have difficulty when I tried to burn dvd (data only). I tried several times to burn some data to a 8x dvd +r (blank dvd), but it always stopped after 2 or 3 mins after the burning process began. I have seen 2 different error messages in different times, 1) write error & 2) invalid block address. In both cases, the burning process failed. However, I tried to burn the very same project(s) into a 4x dvd+rw (blank rewritable dvd) without any problem. Why?? Is the i/o magic 16 dual format/double layer DVD+-RW/+-R can complete the burning process only when I use a DVD+RW? Can anyone help me to solve this problem, I don't think I can afforad to use dvd+-rw every single time when I need to burn something. | For those of you that may have extremely slow reads or burns AND have a VIA chipset, you may be having a UDMA/DMA/PIO conflict. I have the IO Magic DVDRW installed on the Secondary Controller as master (IDE0) and an older Toshiba DVDROM as slave (IDE1). Turns out that the Toshiba doesn't support DMA (defaults to PIO) but the IO Magic does (UDMA 4). If the transfer mode for IDE controller the IO Magic is set to "use DMA (if available)", you will be hosed. The problem is with the VIA chipset, it doesn't like "mixed" modes on the same channel. Right now I live with both channels set to "PIO only" (in XP, Control Panel/System/ /Hardware/Device Manager/IDE ATA-ATAPI Controllers/Secondary Controller/Advanced Settings). One of these days I upgrade the Toshiba to a device that supports DMA and I should get better transfer speeds. One of these days... Comments posted by Steve from United States, November 29, 2004. | Got this at Staples on their Friday Early Bird Special ($40 after easy rebate). This drive works great! Although I burnt a CD at only 19x, not the 48xit says. The DVD I burned did go the 4x speed the DVD was rated. I haven't tried a faster rated DVD media yet. One note: if you get this drive, go to the website it has on the front of the drive itself: www.drvupdate.com. It has a great utility "LiveUpdate". | Picked up the BenQ model today from Staples. Does a great job of burning DVD-R and DVD+R. Not a single coaster so far... | Flashed mine to Benq DW1620 Pro. Follow the flash below from renegade44, then flash to http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DW1620/B7P9.zip , which is the latest firmware B7P9 (Enable 4x writing speed for DVD+R DL media). Ignore Evangelion Eva X's comment. He obviously didn't enable DMA. Make sure you enable DMA and that your Bios is set up accordingly. Otherwise it will suck with a burn time of 1.2x (I know, I was so excited I forgot and got hour long burn times). So far its been great, burned Verbatim DVD+R 8X @ 12X overburn and Prodisc Inkjet printable DVD-R 8X @ 12X overburn. The burn times have been in the high 6 to low 7 minute range. Get this free utility from Benq. It checks your recordable DVD media to see if it will burn properly and not make coasters. http://support.benq.com/files/Storage/Software/QScan/QScan%20v1.0.zip Make sure to check for firmware updates. Benq has been great in upgrading this drive. Get the Epson R200, R300, R300M or R320 inkjet printer. It works great for printing your dvd/cd media. | This unit is easily the best I have owned. I tried 3 other makes, Pioneer, Iomega, Liteon, all with limited success and alot of coasters. But this I/O magic has burned every disc I have thrown at it (Philips 8x, Spin X 4x, Verbatim 4x, Sony 4x, TDK 4x, Fuji 4x as well as 2 different generics) with NO coasters. All have been -R.
