Hi,

the LF-D521 is really a great drive. I using it as an external drive in an USB2.0/Firewire case. I bought it especially for data storage on DVD-RAM. Forget all about DVD+/-RW using as a data storage with packet writing. If you want to store and modify data in a safe way use DVD-RAM (in a cartridge).
DVD-RAM 2x it not very fast so I'm lookin forward to the next drive LF-D621, that will feature 3x speed.
LF-D521 can also be used for writing DVD-R/RW media. Not very fast but I had no problems with burning quality yet.

I purchased it at compusmart.com and very affordable. This is a beautiful piece of work. I havent made a coaster yet. The DVD-RAM feature is great using the dvd-ram drivers for XP I formatted the ram disc to FAT32 and now this baby is a walkin talkin removable lite hard drive that stores 4,7gb. This unit will also work with double sided 9.3gb ram discs as well.

Check this out! 189.99 plus $90 mail in rebate (good 9-1 to 10-31) and a $20 rebate good today and tomorrow

They advertise tha this price is good only today, but I doubt it will go up by too much tomorrow. (you can find this drive all over for $199

Buy.com has this burner on sale for today only (9/9/03) for $189.99 (free shipping) with a $90 mail-in rebate. At $100 for well-rated drive, think I'll order one for the 2nd pc.

Owned this drive since 1/03, and had performed very well under Win2K Pro and Win XP Pro. While I would rather have the Nero Package instead of the BHA software package, this does not affect the strong performance of this drive. I use mainly to read DVD-RAM disks from my Standalone Panasonic recorder HS-2.
Super buy at current pricing!

Sexy Piece of kit, the Dvd-ram feature is excellent!
Have been using DVD x copy, without a bum disk yet!

solid, consistent, silent, dvd-r/rw is enough + you get dvd-ram (perfect for exchangeable (5gb) drive). Dvd disks made by lf-d521 are
readable even in some less known high-end dvd players (where often
home made dvds are not readable). 2x dvd-r speed is quite enough
because 4x speed is often not safe (at least not for many dvd players).

Solid performer, not bought for speed. Nor problems even writing to cheap no name DVD-R discs.

Solid unit. Slow writing CD-R/RW, but thats not what I bought it for. I use the DVD-RAM extensively between my Panny HS-2 and the 521. No problems writing to any of the supported media (using Fuji media BTW). No mechanical problems out of the box. Software package is very good (not outstanding). I use the unit in conjunction with ULEAD DVD Workshop. Had the Pioneer DVR-A05, but wanted the DVD-RAM capability, and didn't want to spend extra on media to take advantage of the Pioneer's 4X DVD-R writing capability, so I EBAYed it!

Wanted this bad. Hooked it up. Door wouldn't open. Strange it comes with a manual door opening tool and two pages in the manual on opening the door!
When I finally got it open, manually, the drive was enormously loud. Very very loud.
I'll give it the option that I had one bad unit. I love my Panasonic E20. But this was a disaster.

Excellent Data Protection
What is often overlooked is the 9.4GB capacity per disc due to the use of both sides. Another ignored factor is the protective cartridge - how much is your data worth? Naked media will never be as safe as cartridge based media. DVD-RAM is a block addressable type of media - you can go to head and sector meaning you can write as much or as little data you want as well as modify or delete it easily. The DVD-+RW/DVD-RW issue is overblown - independant studies (published in eMedia) show that both formats have about the same compatibility with DVD players.
