| I have this writer for a month. It's perfect. I had only a problem with writing Plextor DVD+R 4x media: an "Couldn't perform end of track" error occures. I asked the Plextor tech support and I recieved an answer on the next day. They resolved the problem with following advice (I hope it could be helpful for somebody): The "Could not perform endtrack" error you receive is related to the updates of the Nero software, either 5.5.10.50 and 6.0.xx We advice you to uninstall the Nero software using following procedure; 1) Go to Configuration panel - add/remove software and remove the Nero software 2) Reboot the computer 3) Download the remove utility from following link: http://www.nero.com/en/631940828445001.html 4) Unzip the utility and run it, then reboot the computer. 5) Now install the Nero version supplied with the Plextor drive (5.5.10.45) Afther installation and reboot of the computer your system should work fine again. | I heard that this px-708A has high rating, so I decided to try it out. Unfortunately, it doesn't works with my home dvd player (sony and liteon divx-dvd player). The plextor burns fine at 4X, but doesn't likes cheap brand media when burning at 8X. It rejected cheap brands like GQ and Ritek. | I picked this drive up two days ago and within 1 hr had it installed and burned two backups of my kids movies (they scratch the hell out of them) both backups one Pine +R and One Pine -R both spun at about an average write rate of 7X (variable write rate is a great tool) and both played on my 5 month old RCA stand alone player and my 5 year old Pioneer stand alone and my el cheapo citizen mini stand alone. On the pioneer there was a wee bit (about 3 seconds) of digital picture noize at about the 75% area but quickly vanished, it didn't occur on the RCA or the Citizen. | This awesome drive was up and burning DVD's in 10 min. I abandoned my Sony DRU500UL for it and I'm glad I did. No prob with the software. | This is my first DVD burner and I've been having a fun burning DVDs with DVD X Copy Xpress. I purchased memorex DVD-R 4x,but the Plextor didn't burn it at 8x. I went to Plextor site to check their recommended medias. TDK is one of them and since Staples was doing special on 25 TDK 4x DVD+R for only $24.95 last week,I grabbed it. I was curious to see if the burner burns at 8x with the TDK media. And it did. It's smooth ,quiet and fast. It burnt almost 2 hrs movie in just 7 min. There seems to be some pros and cons about DVD X Copy Xpress, but if you go to their discussion forum to find out what softs you should *NOT* have in yur PC to run the DVD X Copy Xpress flawlessly from the start,then you should have no problem. The only problem about this soft is that you don't get any control as to how you want to burn a DVD,but for that purpose there are some free wares,so no prob. Plextor PX-708A is an excellent DVD burner and I highly recommend this burner. I only wish that the plextor came with Nero,not Easy CD Creator. | Only had this drive for 4 days but the use has been a dream. I know not alot of people care about loading mechanisms but I feel it speaks to the quality of the drive. When this thing loads/unloads, it is amazingly quiet and solid. Installation in Win2k was a snap and burning with Nero 6.3.0.0 has worked flawlessly. | Very nice Burner, Silent, Nice Front Plate, Sturdy feel. using firmware 1.04 I have backed up every movie I have using DVD decrypter then burning with Nero recode 2. All these backups using (TDK DVD-RW 2x) (TDK DVD-R 2x) (Plextor DVD+R 8x)work fine in my Panasonic SC-HT700 home theater system (7 months old). None play in my Toshiba SD-2107U (5 years old). Also I bought some Maxell 2x DVD-R at Wal-Mart these will give a error when it starts to burn these are sold at Circuit city too ( Don't buy these DVD's) I'm will buy more plextor DVD+R Disc's (Better price than TDK's). | Great burner for DVD's. Used Memorex 4x DVD+R media and had no problems getting 8x burns. Where I had problem was burning CD's. I burn 1 CD-R with out any problems but after that I couldn't burn anymore CD in Nero v6.3.0.2. Every time I started a burn I would get "Power Calibration Error". I tried a couple brands of CD-R's with the same results. I also tried these with my old Plexwriter 40/12/40, all of which were burned with out any problems. | Thanks Jer, I emailed plextor support and they confidently responded that they have tested the burned dvds of the writer on their so called "LAB" with diff standalone players and played successfully. They even suggested using their recommeded dvd+r media like TDK and guess what? it still does not play on all dvd players. They probably have only Sony dvd players on their lab! | burning? it is great at 8x on dvd+r in less than 8 mins.! PROBLEMS? Big problem as it would not play on Mintek players, tdk dvd players, toshiba and I dont know what other players! It would play on Sony stand alone dvd player, philips, samsung. Tested firmware 1.02 going to 1.04 and all versions of nero and still does not play on all standalone dvd players. | This drive is amazing. At first I couldn't get it to burn fast, but after I moved it to its own ide channel with no slave it started burning at 8X. I don't have a fast DVD drive to copy from so it generally burns up to 6X when I just copy a DVD. | This Burner sucks!! It will burn to DVD-RW and DVD+RW but will not read from the same disks. I have used the Memorix band, no good. Then I used the TDK, which are on the Plextors compatibility list and they will burn but the burner will not read them. I did check with another reader to see if the data was burnt and it was. I can not even erase the disks due to the fact they are not reconized by the 708a after being burnt. I did try all the firmware updates, no good. Any suggestions would be helpful. | I just got the burner and for some reason Nero is recognizing it as an "image recorder" only and wont burn working CDs much less even recognize the DVD burning capabilities of the the drive.
