| alright, i posted before about erratic writing speed in my burner. i thought it was just my system, but since i put the drive in a new comp with a pentium 2.6ht and 512 megs of ram, and still had trouble. so i exchanged my drive at best buy for another, problem solved. i advise everyone who had my problem to do the same, they didnt even need a reciept to do it. 8 minute burns are sweet. | I have had absolutely no problems with this drive and have only burnt one coaster so far due to media format problem, not drive problem. I do not use the software included with the drive so I am only presenting my opinion on the hardware itself. For those of you having problems buring 8x on the matrix media, downgrade the firmware to revision 1.02. Any firmware revision higher than 1.02 will reduce the maximum speed on the matrix media to 4x. I have burnt at least 15 discs at 8x on the matrix media wiht no problems. Perfect disc every time. | Works great. I bought this on the Plextor reputation alone. I did have to update the firmware to get flawless operation, but it was worth it, and easy to do. I agree with other reviewers here, that software package included is very light given the cost of this drive. Plextor needs to step up a bit and include some nicer software. | This was a really hard choice for me. I have had an HP 200I for a long time, it started going bad on me so I went looking around for a replacement. I used the comments here as a source of help and boy, were all of you right. I remember installing the HP many moons ago and what a hassle that was. This Plextor drive is wonderful. | I previously had an NEC 1100AD burner, used Memorex +R 4X discs, & they played on my Panasonic RV32. When using the Plextor, the same discs now won't play on the RV32. | Very little in this world is a perfect 10, so I rated this a 9. That said, this burner is the cream of the crop. For those of you who have not been able to burn above the old 4x threshold, you need to look at your media. You do not need to use the best, but good quality is required. I have used TDK and Memorex and have had burn times of 7:20 and 8:00, respectively for 4.25gb DVDs. I also use Nero Ultra 6 for all "stand alone" burning. If you use xCopy, you will not see this speed (must be their built in burning software). Instead, you can stop the program after it copies the original files then use Nero to burn the files from the temp directory and see this sucker fly! For those wanting to use this to backup your hard drive, once again, use Nero Ultra 6 and you will compress and backup 30GB worth of data on just over 3 disks in an about 1.5 hours. | Cream of the crop. This writer is so quiet that when I finished a recording session I was waiting for the tray to eject my finished product and it already had. I did not hear the tray eject. I have tried some DVD+R disc that were capable of writing 8X without a problem. One of the reasons I bought this was not becuse it can write DVDR at 8X but it also overburns on 90min and 99min CDR's as well and at a respectable 40X. There aren't many DVD writers that can do that. It also reads 90 and 99min disc without a problem. | So far I'm very happy with drive. I recieved the matrix dvd+r 4x from shop4tech and they work perfectly (haven't had one coaster ~20 burned) but I can only get them to burn at 4x (13-14mins for a full disk). I'm using the 1.03 firmware and nero 6.0.0.28 (the newest one). If anyone has burned these at 8x can you please relay what firmware and program and version of the program you used. Thanks. | Team, I was quite pissed at the Store (NCIX) where I bought my Sony DVD Burner (DW-U10A)as they advertised it as a Dual Format + and - 4X Burner and it only would do 2X on the + Format!! So anyway, I finally took it back and got a full refund after 2 months ! I was so pump up with this sucess I immediately went out and bought the Plextor PX-708A. It's supposed to be an 8X on the +Rs and 4X on the the +RWs and -Rs. It can only do 2X on the -RWs. It seems of much better quality than the OEM Sony and the Tray Mechanism is smooth and extremely quiet. (I haven't bother looking at the software as most OEM supplied stuff is poor and I expect no better here.) So now I'm off to test it some more it but so far it's done a couple of no-name +Rs at 4X no sweat. It also did a TDK +R (really a Ricoh disk Branded TDK) at 8X for a couple minutes then slowed down to 4X. I finally got to a full 8X disk on a Memorex +R (again really a Ricoh disk but slightly different in ID than the TDK using DVD Identifier). I was only burning a small DVD (only 3.3 Gigs on Divas Las Vegas)with DVD Decryptor but it did the whole thing in 6:05 !!! It would have been 5 times that long on the Sony ! I wonder if it would have been faster if I set the speed in DVD Decryptor higher than 8 Times?? (I doubt it.) This is a great Burner so Far. I just did a 693 meg CD in less than 3 minutes using Alcohol 120%. (Average 28X - a decent performance as well!) I also tried speed read and was getting beyond 10X ripping a single layer DVD!! I wish you all Luck with whatever Burner you get. Poor performance is annoying. So far I give this an easy thumbs up! 10 out of 10. Buy some TDK +r 4X media or Memorex and you will be happily surprised (and relieved) that your Plextor drive DOES in fact write at 8X with decent media. | This is an excellent burner. I've used Ritek 2x DVD-RW discs and Ritek 4x DVD-R(G04). The both work great. This burner is also great at burning CDs. Its especially good at making backup copies of my various Games that I own. I love all the Plextor burners that I've had over the years and this one is no different.
