Received this unit yesterday through NCIX.com, but already I have determined that this drive is unable to write at 4x with "certified" 4x Princo DVD-R white-label media. I bought a 50-pack of these discs for $130, and at $2.60 per disc that's as much as I want to spend so I'm NOT going hunting for "higher-quality" media that's much more expensive.

The drive came with 1.1d firmware. I could only to get it to write at 2x with both DVD Decrypter and Nero 6. Nero says it writes at 4x, but it takes 30 mins per disc (which is really 2x speed). Things really get weird when I run both programs in simulation / test mode, as they "burn" at the full 4x speed. I flashed back to 1.1c, same results. Flashed to 500A 2.0e, same results. I'm not going to flash to 2.0f as too many people have complained that Princo media won't write at 4x with that firmware. I have already flashed back to 1.1c and will be returning this piece of garbage.

I'm very ticked that in the end I'll be losing around $35-40 in shipping (delivery and now return) and probably a 15% restocking fee all because this drive does not perform as advertised. What's worse is that just YESTERDAY one of my local shops (Memory Express) put this drive on their site for $10 LESS than what I paid at NCIX! Aaarrgh! I will NEVER order hardware through a website again!!

Anyway I guess I'll have to try a Pioneer (or if I feel like dumping another $200 I could always try Sony's new 510A).

Upon reading what you guys have said, the DW-U10A is the OEM version of the DRU-510A not the DRU-500A.. my bad. lol

The rest remains.

Bought this about a week ago and it came with Firmware 1.0d. Tried several brands of 4x media (Memorex, Verbatim, and Fuji) but none would write at 4x. Upgraded firmware to a DRU-500A 2.0f and now 4x works fine. I flashed the f/w for 2 reasons: 1). Sony doesnt support f/w updates for the DW-U10A , and 2). So that I could write at the speed that it was designed for, 4x.

Now with the 4x upgrade only takes about 15 min to burn a full DVD in Nero 6 :) So I guess I'll rate this "new" drive as a 10.

Bought this drive a week ago flashed it to DRU-500A firmware v2.0f, only have Datawrite 2.4x disks to write to at the minute, wrote to around 10 to 15 disks at 2.4/2.5 speed, backed up DVD films and also PS2 games no problem whatsoever, dont know about the minus side of things as plus is working happily for me.

Did seem to read and write a lot slower before i flashed it to a 500A, it would take nearly 45 mins to write a full DVD, now it takes around 30 mins as a DRU-500A v2.0f.

Still slow and crappy at ripping dvds, takes 20 to 30 minutes longer to rip a dvd with this rather than a proper dvd rom drive, but as we all know ripping with any burner is slow and crappy.

All in all very happy with this drive and i give it a big 10 :)

I bought this drive and foolishly believed all the advice about flashing to the DRU-500A and getting the latest firmware (2.0f) from Sony. After about a week I flashed the drive back to DW-U10A and my findings with the media I used are below.

Traxdata DVD-R 4 Speed
DVDInfo reports RITEKG04 Media Id Code Speed 4.0x 5540KBps

Writer as Sony DRU-500A Firmware 2.0f only writes at 2 speed
Writer as Sony DW-U10A Firmware 1.1c writes at 4 speed

Bulkpaq DVD-R 4 Speed (Orange)
DVDInfo reports PRINCO Media Id Code Speed 4.0x 5540KBps

Writer as Sony DRU-500A Firmware 2.0f only writes at 1 speed
Writer as Sony DW-U10A Firmware 1.1c writes at 4 speed

Datawrite DVD-R 2 Speed (Grey)
DVDInfo reports TDKG02000000 Media Id Code Speed 2.0x 2770KBps

Writer as Sony DRU-500A Firmware 2.0f writes at 2 speed
Writer as Sony DW-U10A Firmware 1.1c writes at 2 speed

Nero 6 I found to continually give the error "Error when writing to the PMA" and I must admit that Elby CloneDVD is a far more satisfactory DVD Writer.

I have accordingly rated the writer as 9 in its intended guise but only 6 as a DRU-500A.

I bought the Sony DW-U10A from newegg.com as OEM. It went into the new system I built (Epox 8RDA+ MB, AMD Athlon 2600, 1GB PC2700 RAM, 120GB HD). I ripped with Decryptor which took a little over an hour. I used Pinnacle 7.0 to burn. I ixnayed all French subtitles files in my test DVD (Tomb Raider), plus I only kept the Dolby 5.1 for sound. Pinnacle took about an hour to do its thing, then it took another 34 minutes to burn it onto a Sony DVD-R 4.7GB.

I popped the newly burnt DVD into my Toshiba DVD player in my bedroom. The picture looked great, but I had no sound. I've never burnt a DVD before, so I was thinking that maybe when I axed the extra sound type files before I burned to save space it might have messed that up. However, I went out and popped the DVD into the Daewoo I have set-up out in the living room with the whole Home Theater set-up, and it played like a charm. I even had all the extra features.

So far, I think this DVD writer is good. However, I only gave it an 8 because of the speed. Of course, I don't have anything to compare it to...this writer could be smokin' for all I know.

Can someone answer this for me:

Does the firmware for the Sony 510A work with the Sony DW-U10A?

According to the Sony site, the 500A only writes to DVD+R at 2.4x max, but the 510A is capable of 4x DVD+R writing. Therefore I want the f/w for 510 on my U10A, will it work? Please let me know.

Thanks

I bought the DW-U10A about a month ago and I am having problems big time. It came with Pinnacle InstantCD/DVD which is a suite including Pinnacle Expressions. I started using Expressions to create a DVD. It hangs so many times 3-4% into the burn that I gave up on it. It did manage to produce I good DVD but it only played well in one of my 2 players.

I then tried InstantDisc to burn a VIDEO_TS folder in UDF Video format. All I got was a directory of files filled with zeros. I had Impressions create a UDF image from the same VIDEO_TS folder and used InstantDisc to burn it OK. I have tried repeating this several times using a Verbatim DVD-RW and always get the same result. My problem is that I'm using Windows ME so I can't create an image greater than 4GB to fill up a DVD so I need to be able to burn a VIDEO_TS folder.

I am using the drive as secondary master on an ASUS A333 (I think) motherboard. I've noticed others having problems with ASUS, could this be my problem?

I've got my DW-U10A couple month ago. So far I burnt quite few DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW/CD-R/CD-RW with this drive without any problem.

I've got problem only with recording/reading Black Disk (black dye) CD-ROM. Recorder refuse to recognize disk at all. All other colors are OK.

Does any one experience similar problem? I guess it could be just my drive has not enough laser power or all of SONY DW-U10A.

Cheers

Sergei

Overhere (Belgium) you can buy the DRU-510A for 399 euro's (Makro).
Version of firmware = V1.09b.
So I'm looking if there are problems with this firmware like the older version of the DRU-500.
First impression ok but with the use of dvdxcopy the backup dvd wouldn't work........

I wanted the DRU500A but could not find one anywhere, the DW-U10A was available just about everywhere so I took the chance and bought it, best HW I ever bought. If you are looking for a multiformat burner then this is the one.

Excellent burner, worked straight out the box, no coasters yet and have tried with -R and RW and CDR. I bought the OEM version and use Nero and Pinnacle S8, I can burn 24x on CD and 4X on DVD. I watched some DVD movies on it and again it's just awesome :)

I have taken this statement straight from the Sony Support site, is the DW-U10A the same as the DRX500UL? Does that mean that you do NOT need to crack the DW-U10A in order to upgrade the firmware?: I would appreciate an answer.

Thanks, Mike.

"What is the difference between the DRU500A and DRU500AX and the DRX500UL and DRX500ULX?

The hardware is identical. The software that comes with the DRU500A and DRX500UL is on a CD-ROM disc and you will need to download the latest updates to the software from the Internet. The DRU500AX and DRX500ULX comes on a DVD-ROM disc and has all the latest software updates included. Both drives can be updated to the same, latest firmware."

tried datawrite 4x red tops but would only write 2x and had probs with alot of dvd players.
other s/ware used -dvd decrypter, dvdtoone 1.11,(only version with full disc option)

got mine yesterday and had some initial problems. it wouldn't let me burn an audio cd faster than 10x. i used the firmware hack to update from 1.1c to the 500A firmware v1.0g. now i'm burning at the rates i'm supposed to: 2.4x DVD+RW and 24x CDR so far. haven't tried the others.

it doesn't make sense that sony isn't willing to support the drive just because they decided to only produce OEM versions. you'd think if you were proud of the product you created and were confident in it, you'd be willing to support it just the same as any other drive.

anyway, other than the initial firmware snag, this drive is working great. i got it as a gift, and i'm very happy with it.

take care...
