Using a Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB, I have successfully burned a 2 hour movie and was able to play it on my standalone DVD player.

The reason why I about this burner is because it was recommended for the make and model of my laptop. So far no problems with this DVD burner. I've updated the firmware to 103D (through dell support website). I have used Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB media, and Fujifilm DVD+R DL 8.5GB media to burned movies on them and plays with no problems with my standalone DVD player.

I've had only one problem with it and that was with the media I put up. Memorex DVD-R 4.7GB manufacture MBI 01RG04. I recently got a list of working media that seems to be 100% accurate from the looks of it alone. I don't know about the other firmware since 1.N0 is what I have.

It seems to be accurate since MBI 01RG04 (Memorex DVD-R 4.7gb) was't on the list and it did show up as "illegal disc." Apparently there are 555 types of media that are writable on this drive with firmware 1.N0.

I rated this above average because it's new, it still works after a month and I've not any other problems with it lately, just stuck with a bunch of dvds I can't burn on this writer but it's able to read them pretty well. Doesn't make sense.

ive had this drive for a year now, it has written all of my media, the only problem i have with it is i have found it only to write one type of dual layer dvd and that was a memorex brand. Apart from that i would of give it 10 points but only 8 for the lacking in dual layer media support.

no DVD-R Dual Layer writing...it's a fraud that writes all formats...

Recived it from for Inspiron 6000 notebook as a replacement of Toshiba Samsung TS-L532B

Unclear specs. It is supposed to read and write both + and -R Dl dvd discs, but Nero InfoTools reports:
Read DVD-R DL : No
Write DVD-R DL : No

So far it seems marginal. Failes to even read home burned discs which read OK in other drives. Extremaly slow copying disks with Dell included Sonic software, and resulting copy will not play in tv-DVD player.
Same disks used OK in an old desktop Emprex burner.
Disks by GQ, reported by Nero Speed to be:
DVD +R SONY D11(000)
DVD -R SONY SONY08D1

Will retry with Nero 7
