I haven’t used my old DVD200i for a long time because I did not like the long wait for my burns. But given the poor results I was getting with new TDK 8x DVD+R (CMC MAG.E01) media when burned with a Lite-On SOHW-1693S. I decided to try it with my older DVD 200i. I put it in an external case and burned a few test disks.

To my surprise the crappy TDK CMC MAG.E01 media, when burned with the DVD 200i, gave much better results. Nero CD/DVD disk quality test gave this media scores from 77 to 70. The same media burned with the 1693S gave lower results. Not bad for a older burner like this one.

The HP DVD 200i has Ricoh MP5125 firmware ver. 1.72 nad during this testing I only had 2 kinds of DVD+R 8x media avaliable. The TDK media had good enough results. I also tested Verbatim 8x (MCC 003) media. The Verbatim disk had similar quality results burns as the TDK tests.

I will continue burning lower quality media with the 200i and good media with the 1693S. Looks like this is a win-win situation.

is there any firmware to burn dual?
as http://peoples.mandrakesoft.com/~warly/files/cdrtools/ ?

i would have to recommend against this drive.

it does function ok writing to 4x, and lower certified media (at maximum of 2.4 writing only of course). drive is slow and expensive in comparison to many other drives.

HP support is worst i have encountered so far of any compnay. Called them- got India reps- would only allow me to talk to a technician if i paid $30.

i upgraded this drive to newest firmware v 1.72. HP claims this allows to write to 8x certifed media. However, this is not true. I tested on both Nero and cloneDVD- both failed with this firmware when writing to a 8x media giving media related errors.

Buy another company DVD burner instead.

Those that took part in the 200i $99 upgrade program (upgrading from a 100i to a 200i) through HP have the ability of getting a refund.

HP has lost a lawsuit in reference to promises of enabling the 100i drives to record DVD+R and not delivering.

Also, those that have a 100i MAY be eligible to receive a free 200i.

This burner was pretty good for the year I had it, but starting a few months ago it started giving me errors every time I burned a cd. It never gave any problems burning dvd's but it gave a "power calibration error" every time I tried to burn a cd, even at the lowest speed. I tried everything possible to fix it, even cleaning the laser with an alcohol swab and updating the firmware, but nothing worked. I exchanged it this morning at best buy with my PSP for a 400i and will post a review on that once I've used it enough.

This drive works fine with CompUSA brand DVD+R/RW and my Apex-AD-1200 plays them fine. I haven't had any compatibility issues yet.

ONE BIG PROBLEM THOUGH:

This drive is either super sensitive or just cheaply made. I get tons of read errors when I try to copy DVD's. My $29 Cynedyne reads DVD's that this HP would never read.

HP should stick to printers. They make(resell) mediocre DVD drives.
Buy a different brand. Some of my friends have cheap generic DVD writers that work better than brand name.

Have DVD 200j. I like it, but I hate that I can not burn 99 Minutes Cds!

Habe den 200j. Ist ein guter Brenner, nur leider kann er keine 99 Minuten Cds brennen, was mich schon so manches mal genevt hat!

Have the dvd for several months. I have a problem with the DataTrack DVD+R disks. Nero will burn the disks and i can read them on the standalone Apex dvdplayer. But i can not read them back in my computer anymore. I updated the firmware but the problem stays. After contacting HP they have send me another writer. But the problem stays the same. So conclusion, it's very good drive no coasters wat so ever BUT STAY AWAY FROM DATATRACK DVD DISKS

Software is worthless, but burning ok. However it doesn'rt accept Maxell +R media I bought today. Tried firmware 1.36 and 1.51, but it doesn't burn Maxell. Philips, Fuji is ok.

I can confirm that Verbatim DataLifePlus is no good on HP DVD200i. The firmware upgrade did not solve the problem

While I am using the 200j, not the 200i (at least that's what my computer tells me it is, a 200j)... I can say without a doubt that Verbatim DataLifePlus 4.7 GB DVD+R discs do not work in my machine. Everything completely fails when trying to use these discs!

Those that exchanged their 100i drive for the 200i drive as part of the $99 upgrade program offered by HP have the ability to get their money back.

HP has lost a lawsuit in reference to false advertising and the promotion of DVD+R burning ability., which was promised with the 100i, but was never delivered.

Also, certain owners of the 100i have the ability of receiving a free 200i drive.

I've only been using this unit for two days, but running with firmware revision 1.37 and Ahead Nero 5.5.x I have had absolutely no problems. I've installed ONLY the HP drivers and NONE of the applications that were bundled with this driver under Windows XP Pro. The reason for this is that based upon the pure garbage that came bundled with my previous HP unit (9900 series DVD reader / CD writer combo, also nice hardware) I bought the aforementioned Nero along with Norton Ghost and have been happy with it for what I want to do (primarily data backup).

On another thread, I've been using Verbatim DVD+R disks without incident; I seem to remember somebody on here claiming to have problems with certain brands of DVD+R's on this board.

I've used this burner for about 3 weeks now and it's worked perfectly. I have tried it with Windows XP and 2000, burned Maxell and Memorex CD-R's and RW's, and Ritek DVD+RW/+R with no problems. The DVD's play fine in my Norcent DVD player.

I would have given it a perfect 10 if it wasn't for the bad bundled software. The only thing is use from the bundle is DLA, for creating DirectCD's. I use Nero and Ulead dvd workshop for everything else.

I am extremely dissatisfied with this product.
HP support was all but useless in helping me get this resolved.
The drive refused to write to any CD-R/W brand/size I tried dispite trying every remedy including reinstalling my OS. I had some success with DVD writing, but not enough to justify the price I paid for it.
I really want to give it a zero, but "1" is my only choice.
It sux.

I bought this writer 3 days ago and I'm still trying to get it to work (I'm running Windows XP on a Compaq Presario). I can't even get it to recognize the DVD+R and DVD+RW that came in the box! If you buy this, save your receipt (mine is about to go back to the store). I was able to burn a VCD, but can't play it anywhere.

Well been using this burner for a month and its worked perfect, just don't use the software that comes with it, it really sucks, been using NERO 5.5.917, DVDxCOPY and Roxio 5.134 easy creator.
1st thing I did was go get the free Bitsetter from Plus RW org and set my DVD burner to record +R's and +RW's to DVD-ROM and upgrade the firmware to the newest version that is also region free. Burned about 60-70 DVD+R's and only had 1 fail and that was because the media was defective, have used the following brands without a problem
Ritek, Memorix, philips and Imation. Even though you are not suppose to burn video's passed 4.37 gigs I have done many out to 4.4 and 4.5 and they play back flawless in any DVD player I have tried them in, so far I have not found a stand alone DVD player that has had any problems playing my Burned DVD's made with this burner and that includes, ironically, the Panasonic DVD-R Recorders E10, E20, E30 and HR2. I have tried brands by Philips, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, Daewoo, APEX, Sampo and Sharp all play my DVD+R's perfect.

Drive works great, made a image of Run Silent Run Deep with dvd cloner, but that program doesn't see the hp, so i burned the image with nero and was great , my dvd set top Panasonic scht-75 says it doesn't play +r disks, but play it with no problems.. Beside the problem with dvd cloner nero will burn sometimes and other times will not do anything.. any help would be great.. firmware is still 1.06 sniper_usmc@comcast.net

It does everthing that I need. I have no complaints. I don't use the software that was provided with it. I use Dazzle DVD complete instead (and TMPGEnc) and it works great.

The drive is great, but the software bundle sucks. burned over 20 disks and only one coaster (my fault). All movies have worked on all but 2 players (both jvc dvd players).Use dvd decrypter, Nero, dvd workshop and power dvd.

I've had the DVD200i from the first day it went on sale on their web site. It has been a great burner. The few disks I've ruined were from errors in some of the software I've experimented with.

MyDVD was a pain from day 1. I have experienced a few issues with some players that would not work, but from what I've read tonight, I think I will switch to mode 2 and see if that doesn't help.

Its nice to see the prices starting to come down for the media. I use the burner to mass produce (30+ dvds) projects I develop for hire.

Its a great burner!

Never a problem!
Burned DVD, SVCD, VCD, PC files...
Some DVD titles won't play on some old DVD players.

Purchased this drive from OfficeMax for $230 ($350 - $50 HP rebate
- $70 OfficeMax GiftCard). I had ordered the Sony DRU500 from Dell
who said it would ship in 1-2 weeks but changed it to 2 months
after I placed the order. Couldn't wait that long, so canceled and
got the HP.
Seems to work pretty well. Burnt a movie on the HP 2.4X DVD+RW and
was able to play it on 2 computers as well as my Sony DVP7700
DVD player.
Burnt another movie on the HP 2.4X DVD+R, my Sony DVD player gave a
C13 error when I inserted the disc. However I was able to press
the menu button and then play the movie.
Bought FujiFilm 2.4X DVD+R from Best Buy (25 pack for $50 after rebates).
Burnt a movie and was able to play on the Sony DVD player as well
as the 2 computers.
Updated the drive to firmware version 1.36 from the HP web site.
Haven't tried to burn a movie with the new firmware but I don't
anticipate any problems.

Total movies burnt 3, no coasters yet.
S/W used: DVD Decrypter 3.1.3.0, Smart Ripper, Nero 5.5.9.17
and Power DVD XP.
After reading other user's comments, I haven't bothered to use
the S/W bundled with the drive but I had to install part of it
for the firmware update.

I got mine about a week ago and i already love it, have made several DVD's using my own software, as the sofware bundled with it kind a sucks. but works great with DVD Miestro.

Also for the Guy who said he has to use HP media, I have been using Memorex, TDK, Sony, hp and Fuji the TDK and Memorex read the fastest on Set top's.

the Drive is a 10, but because of Poor software i rated it an 8

I just recorded on a DVD+R in mode 2 and it plays on my Apex 500a dvd player. I used the MyDVD software that came with the drive. I had first tried recording on a DVD+RW in mode 1 without success. After reading the comments on this list it was easy to solve. thx.
