When applying minimum gap, the old version would save the minimum milliseconds from your settings, but now it has to be typed in manually, adding an unnecessary extra step. Could this be fixed? Thanks!

Aside from the standard things SE can do, plus doing an OCR of PGS to SRT, I am truly impressed with how I can run a video through the program, using the whisper module, and it creates a 99% accurate subtitle track. Using whisper does take a long time, and I’ve only used English language videos, but the accuracy is amazing, capitalizing proper names and proper sentence punctuation.

Fantastic software.

It will be perfect with
- the ability to OCR subs that are burnt on video
- convert between graphic subs like DVB to IDX/SUB, VOB to DVB etc.

Thank you anyway !

Subtitle Edit is my main subtitle editor, besides it I don't usually use another one (except for the aegis sub, which focuses on subtitles in ASS and SSA), it is excellent in relation to the multiple formats it works, and when the large amount of tools such as delay, formatting of letters and colors, translations (including using the google translator V1 api), cut and lines and everything else, but the strongest point is the OCR capture for subtitles in vobsub and SUP, because the analysis is very efficient, and there is the possibility of improvements in the capture, to help the capture engine), even better than subrip (which was the program I used previously for this same function). For editing subtitles, together with video I prefer to use Subtitle Workshop, because in this regard it is simpler, but for other tasks, Subtitle Edit for me is essential. I thank the developers for the project and for its constant updates.

Subtitle Edit is an excellent tool, the only thing that doesn't work well is the Set Video Offset at least when the frame rate is 23,976. It starts OK but it doesn't match at the end of the video.

I installed SubtitleEdit over a year ago. It worked great. A few minor errors that was easily corrected. I recently started using it again, and I unfortunately installed an update. Now, it can take almost as long to correct the errors as the show is long. It continuously makes errors. A show with a character named B.J. (displayed in CC as [ B.J. ] )can convert into a dozen different 'words', such as " 5.] ] " or the number 3 with some gibberish etc. The lower case L often gets inserted as a slash ( / ) in the middle of a word or name. The music symbol.. Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's a bloody mess of letters, numbers and or symbols.

When it comes to italic text, just hold your breath. Often with a 2-line caption that has only the first line italic, it will put an extra or somewhere on the second line. In fact, it can even on some occasions insert them anywhere on a line, even if there is no italic text.

Short phrases like "just I", and "can you" and sometimes 3 or 4 words get combined in a nonsensical way. I just don't know how the so-called spell-checker, for lack of a more accurate term, can miss this correction. How can 30 be changed to 3O... ? Shouldn't a number be easier to detect than trying to guess why you have 3 O's.

On the flip side, the time detection at least allows you to sync the text with the speech.

I am a user of Subtitle Edit for several years. It is a great program. But like other users, around December 3, 2018 the program began returning empty fields where translated subtitles should be. I've tried a fresh install of Subtitle Edit but the problem still exists.
It is possbile that the interface to Google translate has changed.

Sorry I had to update my review. What is really great is it works with demuxed DVD files. It has powerful and very accurate tools. Accurate and fast OCR, automatic timing and overlapping error corrections, visual sync, so much to offer! Can export completed work to to sub file for SubtitleCreator. Absolute best I've used! I love this software, and have been using it for a few years, but the latest version (3.5.2) is reported by Windows Defender as TrojanSpy:Win32/Skeeyah.A!rfn (and is sending the executable to quarantine) so I had to revert to 3.5.1, which seems to have no problem with Defender. The best subtitles editor I'm aware about (and I have tested lots of them along the years). Worth the effort to learn how to use the many options provided.

To be almost 'perfect', I miss:

1) An additional feature to append subtitles which need recalculating the starting point of the second and following parts. For example, to create a single movie subtitle from several CD's in just one go. Currently, my methodology to accomplish this task is using MKVMerge where it's only needed to append them using one button. As the reference subtitle editor, I think SubtitleEdit should include a similar functionality.

2) A synchronization factor Value/Report. Would be extremely useful to synchronize audio on external applications.
Example: After fine synchronization of the subtitles to match the target video (using the different tools like Point Synch or whatever), I'd wish to know what % or the fractional value has been applied. That value would be unvaluable to stretch and apply the same delays to the audio as well in an audio editor like Audacity (See change speed filter).

I work with subtitles a lot because I'm hard of hearing and this is the best subtitle editor on the market. It is absolutely fantastic. I been using for years.

Syncing subs to voice and frame rate is accurate down to the millisecond and easily done, with of without the Visual Sync feature. You don't even have to sync the whole sub if you don't want to, it gives you the ability to sync only those parts that are out of sync without affecting the rest. Usually when I come across an out of sync subtitle I simply wait for the first spoken word in the video, write down the precise time, and go into Subtitle Edit and select Synchronization > Adjust all times show earlier or later, find the line of the first spoken word and set the subtitles time to start there and move all the rest of the subtitles accordingly and check that the frame rates match. Easy.

Editing and adding lines is straightforward, for example, translating foreign language parts into English, (it has a great auto-translate feature) and replacing them. There are some movies where the actors are speaking a foreign language in some parts but don't show the English subs for it and it's annoying not knowing what they're talking about. I used Subtitle Edit to create English subs for the Italian language miniseries Il Capo Dei Capi and it came out quite good.

Subtitle Edit can also convert from one sub format to many others, useful for if your media player doesn't accept, say Advanced SubStation Alpha (ASS) subtitles, you can easily convert it to SRT or whatnot.

Nikolaj Lynge Olsson the talented developer of Subtitle Edit frequently updates the program, and unlike other developers, his updates always improve the program, not screw it up.

I really appreciate that he freely shares this program with everybody. When I get my Christmas money I plan on making a donation to the developer for this gem of an app.

works extremely well at many things for subtitles.

when i requested awhile ago that some things be fixed and added, they were attended to extremely quickly.

Looks pretty good, but has quite a bunch of practically unusable stuff that could have been lots better. Like the horrible default Video-player, correcting tools which aren't configurable at all, and a lot of other worthless stuff.

If only Subtitle Workshop was still being developed, it was so much more clever & configurable, but unfortunately does not handle UTF-8 files correctly.

English OCR works well. Managed to OCR entire SUB file with only minor corrections in words needed. Less then a minute needed to adjust subtitles that were off by a few seconds. Creating subtitles is tedious, but simple enough to do. Appending subtitles (joining) was slightly complicated, however worked. You can use this to save subs as different formats. The interface was confusing for the first few runs, and I suggest becoming comfortable with what everything does. Overall, this deserves a '9'.

Major improvement on UI since 2.x. Now you can actually adjust sync with video, same as with every other tool. Previously you'd have to close the video preview window to adjust timings.

Only sub editor I know of that can handle unicode. Now with less suck.

Still some bad/awkward ui design like the video goes below subs, not next to them (most displays are widescreen) but starting to be usable.

Review by Barleyman_ on Nov 15, 2010 Version: 3.0 RC4 OS: Windows 7 Ease of use: 4/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 9/10 Overall: 7/10

Pros
- Unicode support
- Can rip from sub files
- Nice spell-checker

Cons
- Can't join/split subtitles
- Lacks of basic timing options available in Subtitle Workshop like expander/reducer and duration limit
- No framerate convertion?
- No undo buton/list in toolbar, neither crl+z hotkey

Nice program but it's weak where SW is strong and viceversa :(

To the earlier poster,if you look on the front of the menu you will see adjust all times with show earlier and show later, that's your shift.I use the program all the time with the newest version to stretch and fix errors and works great.

Downloaded this to do one thing and one thing only: to shift selected dialogs a few seconds forward. It can be done easily with most subtitle softwares. Subtitle Workshop can, with ease. So does Aegisub. Subtitle Edit, although look simple and much more polished than the two, frankly just baffles me. There is no SHIFT function.

This is something new and unusual.
An open source subtitle tool, that has already got a couple of novelties implemented.
Worth to check out if you work with subtitles a lot.
I've reported a couple of minor bugs, but it seems that this tool is a promising one.
I hope that more programmers will co-operate with the author.
Thank you, Mr. Olsson.
