MacYTDL is a macOS GUI front end for youtube-dl the cross-platform video downloader. It runs on any Apple Mac with OS X 10.10 or later. It has been developed in AppleScript. The code is not protected and can be opened in Script Editor. It is code signed and should pass Gatekeeper.

Version 1.31.1 – "Quick" bug fixes
Bug fixes
A change was made in v1.31 of MacYTDL to prevent the “Monitor” dialog hanging when video files were being converted. The Monitor dialog would be closed after 20 minutes. That change was also wrongly applied to live stream downloads. That has been corrected in v1.31.1. The change has been tested with a live stream recording lasting over 60 minutes.
In v1.30 of MacYTDL, audio only downloads were excluded from batch processing. That was because of the time it was taking to open the “Batch Functions” dialog. A better solution has been implemented in v1.31.1. Previously, if the “Audio only” setting was on, a check was done to find out if the serving web site provided an audio only file in the desired format. That check was done before the “Batch Functions” dialog was opened. That check is not done in v1.31.1. If the user wishes the best audio available, that is downloaded by yt-dlp. If the user specifies a particular audio format, the entire file provided by the URL is downloaded and the audio component extracted. If necessary, that file is then converted using FFmpeg. If that result is not what is required, the option to “Keep original video and/or subtitles file” remains available to enable further processing. This approach has been taken because it is significantly faster.
A large number of localisations were not working in MacYTDL because of coding errors. Those have been fixed in v1.31.1. This has mostly involved pointing localisations to the MacYTDL bundle.
A MacYTDL user, Michel, has provided a significant number of translations into Spanish. Michel has been providing translations for some years. His contributions are much appreciated.
The four main dialogs (Main, Settings, Admin, Utilities) have been reworked somewhat to reduce the number of elements which are cropped by the edge of the dialog or are overlapping when languages change.
The server used by Helmut K. C. Tessarek to provide FFmpeg binaries has changed. That prevented MacYTDL from updating FFmpeg for users on macOS 10.10 Yosemite to 11 Big Sur. That has been fixed in v1.31.1.
It seems that expired certificates are likely a problem for users on macOS 10.13 and 10.14. Those users might encounter errors when they ask MacYTDL to update FFmpeg or MacYTDL. Consequently, MacYTDL now forces curl to ignore certificates. Because of such difficulties, a later version of MacYTDL might not support versions of macOS prior to 10.15 Catalina.
Somehow in v1.31 I managed to empty out all the AppleScript code from the Send-URL-To-MacYTDL Service. So, users who installed the Service would find that it didn’t work. To restore the Service’s functions, open “Utilities”, remove the Service then, reinstall the Service.
A decision made in version 1.27.1 has been reversed. Users on macOS 10.10, 10.11 and 10.12 can now access the ABC iView “Chooser”. Previously that was locked off because most users on those versions of macOS had out of date certificates which broke the binary executable “curl”. In version 1.31.1, I’ve decided to enable the function by forcing curl to ignore certificates for those users. I’ve extended that arrangement to users on macOS 10.13 and 10.14 who also can have out of date certificates. Note that this can be a security risk and so the URL accessed always is prefixed with “iview.abc.net.au”.
New Known Issue
The “Add to batch” function makes a mess of adding playlists to a batch. The result corrupts the format of the batchfile.txt file. This should be fixed in the next release.
Workaround: Playlists can be manually added to batchfile.txt:
In MacyTDL, click on “Open Batch functions” and press Return.
In the “Batch Functions” dialog, click on “Edit”.
The batchfile.txt file will open in the default text editor (usually TextEdit).
If there is an entry in the file, make a new blank line and paste the URL of the playlist.
If the file is empty, just paste the URL of the playlist.
Type a hash character ie. “#”.
Type the name of the playlist.
Type a dollar sign ie. “$”.
Press Return – there must be a blank line at the end of the file.
You can add more than one playlist to a batch and can mix playlists and non-playlist downloads.
