| This writer has worked fine on a variety of media, including DL disks, using firmware 203d (that's Dell, updated 03/2005) and Ulead DVD Movie Factory. However, I can't get two different types of 16x DVD media to burn - Sony and Memorex. Dell claims that the Sony's should work. Perhaps it is the burning software that is the problem? | This drive seems to be the same drive as that shipped for Dell D-Series Lattitude laptops. Fore reasons that are boyond me, they are supplied ex-Dell with a frimware from Olypus and appear as "Olympus S-DVD-100" in the general description of the drive in your Dell laptop. Useful site that led me to this was http://www.windowsforum.com/showthread.php?t=890035 - thanks! Drive has worked well since installation. Shipped with nice colour-matched cover for the Dell. Bought through third-party supplier in the UK for about £50. I am still planning to run a region-free patch / firmware upgrade for this drive. | @ Walther & other Toshiba users: Bought this one for about 80 euro (US $ 90?) at komplett.nl Toshiba support is bad for "obsolete" models (that's what they call 3 year old laptops!). Had some trouble getting the drive to work in my Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 because I had the GEN-version and my SP4600 did not recognize it...(controller even "disappeared"). SP4600 has two seperate controllers (so do sp2100 and sp6100) with seperate irq's (14&15). Apperently (after extensive investigation on cdrinfo.com) it seemed I needed the GNR-version. GEN-version can be made GNR-version by flashing it reverse-ATA or soldering pin45&47 together(Not that the Reserve-ATA-method has less firmware support). Now it works fine even on my "old" SP4600 with just a PIII-700 Bulk & Retail=GEN-version=CS OEM=GNR version=Master/Slave Comments posted by Gman from Netherlands, August 04, 2005. | I got mine from dell I'm using it with Inspiron 700m. I got mine as a replacement to the old mulfunctioning one. The only problem with this drive is recording double layer DVD it only accepts verbatim and has rejected memorex and fujifilm. | UPDATE: After upgrading my firmware from 2.02C to 2.03D, the Dynex DL discs (RITEK...D01) worked fine. Flashing the firmware was faster and easier than I expected. | I have been joyfully backing up my TV series DVDs with this drive in my new Dell Inspiron 700m for the last month+. I am currently working my way through a cake box of 100 Velocity (single layer) DVD+Rs (media code MCC.....003). They work fine. I tried some Dynex 8.5GB DL DVD+Rs (RITEK...D01) and they did NOT work with this burner. | No problems writing CDR's DVD+R (cheap unbranded ones). Region free (RPC1) firmware for this drive can be found at: http://tdb.rpc1.org/ or http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php I have flashed my brand new Dell Precision M70 laptop with the firmware supplied by the Dangerous Bros (first link) without any problems (even using their Windows flasher). | Toshiba Satalite + Tectra laptop owners beware !!! when you get an "IDE drive error #1" after installing this drive. Most Toshiba's do NOT have two IDE controllers, just one. Port one = master = HD Port two = slave = DVD/CD Toshiba doesn't allow you to change anything about those settings NEC6500's are shipped as "master" no switch or dipswitch present} to change to slave or CS You either have to short pin 45+47 of the 50pin plug ( like i did ), or use a bootable floppy with a program like binflash Do a google before soldering, be very carefull. | I just got this drive (refurbished) from DELL as a replacement for my failed one. It insalled easily, and Nero InfoTool shows Firmware version 2.02c. I would like to upgrade to the latest firmware v2.24 from NEC. However the install instructions of this firmware warn that you can only update from Firmware versions 2.21, 2.22 & 2.23. | Have been using this on my Dell Inspiron 700M laptop since beginning of this year. Burning flawless DVDs of various brands and grades. Quality testing with KProbe and Nero CD/DVD Speed showing very good to excellent burns with Taiyo Yuden DVD-R. Takes slightly longer time to burn compared to my desktop NEC 3520A burner but I guess this is a laptop burner. Highly recommended for laptops. | I got this CD/DVD Writer with my Dell I6000D notebook. It works very well. It is quiet compared to other drives I have seen. I tried burning Verbatim +R DL with 7.5 GB concert video. | Very good machine for a laptop. I have tried a variety of 8x media and posted the results here: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=58603 I ordered this unit from Newegg.com a few months ago and highly recommend it. Only thing it doesn't like is Optodisc 16x DVD-R White Inkjet Printable media and has some problems with PRODISC 8x DVD-R Silver Top Inkjet printable media.
