I have been completey satisfied with this burner's performance. I made over 20 discs (on mainly recommended media, plus about 6 on media not listed under Sony's recommendations) and have had no problems (not one coaster). Burned to all the formats and have had no problems viewing the output on my standalones, X-Box and PS2.

Works great with the included software as well as Ulead DVD Moviefactory. Have had no software issues. Just need to read this site and get tips if you want to burn compliant DVD videos. It seems most problems are related to encoding/decoding not hardware. This has been the most fun I have had in ages working with my computer.

Highly recommend this drive to anyone (or the most recently released cousin (DRU500AX

One of the best devices to select for DVD burning. I selected this for two reasons.

1. It can write DVD+R(W) and DVD-R(W)
2. It can record CD @ 24x10

My CD-Recorder was a x24 device and I think I don't need to cash-out for a x48 device (2.5 min for a CD is very acceptable for me), therefore I was able to (at least temporarily) decomission the CD-RW and make the SONY plus a new 200GB HD find space in the PC. (A consideration that may be important for many users).

No problems with recording. I have found that DVD+RW recording of pre-masters (for proof-viewing on a standalone DVD) is much faster (at 2.4 speed) compared with x1 (even x2) DVD-RWs.

Only issue is, you can't remove your DVD-ROM. The SONY is VERY slow in reading DVDs. It can rip at x2 speed while my Pioneer DVD-ROM rips at between x8 and x13.

I purchased this drive a week ago. It works great on my Win XP 2.0GHz Dell w/ 768mb DDR SDRAM. I have had 1 coaster in 11 tries b/c I used cheap Khyphermedia DVD-R. I've tried DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW without any other problems. Because this is a new drive, my guess is that the firmware is 1.0f or 1.0g. I'm not sure how to check.
The MyDVD software is pretty easy to learn but doesn't give much flexibility to someone who wants to do beyond basic DVD authoring. Despite its elementary functions, it does work.
I've also used Nero to create DataDVDs that work well.
I'm very satisfied with this drive!

I ordered this drive a while ago, and it finally arrived a few days ago. However when I put the drive into my computer I found that it was actually a Sony DVD±RW DW-U10A, not a Sony DVD±RW DRU500A as expected.

For anyone that does not know what this... don't try to find it on the Sony website - it doesn't seem to exist!

But don't worry, it isn't a fake - I have phoned Sony and they assure me that it is their drive.

So... why did I post this in the DRU-500A? Because it is the same drive! The DW-U10A is an OEM version of the DRU-500A. Unfortunately this means that Sony have not yet decided to provide any support or firmware upgrades.

Pros of the DW-U10A:
It is cheaper than the DRU-500A as it does not contain any free
software or a free DVD-RW
It is readily available (although many companies seem to be
selling this drive and calling it the DRU-500A!?)
It is the same as the DRU-500A but with the 1.0f (possibly 1.0g)
firmware and therefore seems to support most cheap media as well
as expensive

Cons of the DW-U10A:
There are currently no firmware upgrades and Sony do not have any
plans to provide any in the near future

Fortunately, there is a website from which a firmware can be downloaded which upgrades the drive from a DW-U10A (1.0a) to a DRU-500A (1.0d). After this, the drive can be updated as and when necessary with the DRU-500A firmwares (for instance immediately up to the current 1.0g firmware!

http://isweb44.infoseek.co.jp/computer/type-ive/files/DW-U10A_to_DRU-500A.zip

Obviously the site can be visited (http://isweb44.infoseek.co.jp/computer/type-ive/files/), but unfortunately you need to be able to read Japanese!

I hope this is helpful to anyone who may consider buying a DW-U10A, or may have received one when expecting a DRU-500A!

All in all, this is a very good DVD burner - as the DW-U10A or the DRU-500A, and I have made no coasters, even on cheap 4× media. Very happy!

Well here's the low down for real. For I am not partial.
The Sony DRU500A is the drive for me. I have tried only two
DVD-R drives so far, and this is the second of that process.
The Pioneer DVR-105(A05) was my first drive of choice, and I
thought that it would live long with my system. Not so. There
were a few problems that I never worked out to get the drive to
function as everyone else here had. Not to stray from the topic but
I wamt to really compare these as best as possible for anyone with
any questions at all. While the DVR-105 seems to be thee drive of choice, I feel proud to say that I am putting my word on the Sony.

As soon as I installed the drive, I opened MyDVD to make a DVD project, successfully.(The same Sonic MyDVD software that came with the DVR-105, but it just would'nt work). I flashed the firmware after a few burns to the 1.0f, then again today to the 1.0g.
All in all this is a great burner. I would recommend it to anyone that hasn't or already has bought any other.

I have only used two types of media.

Ritek - 2x
Princo- 1x

The Ritek and the Princo both work well with every player that I have including my playstation. Hopefully this drive will live up to my anticipation. So far as everyone else here has said, "I haven't burned a single coaster yet". The only problem I did have was with one of my favorite programs, Fireburner. I still haven't resolved that yet, but I only use this drive for DVD burning since the CD-R is so slow.

ive had the dru500a for 4 days and so far after a lot of head scratching and trials, i now report thr following:

after reading some tips on this site i can confirm that using the udf
option and version (1.02) from within nero (ver 5.10.0.7) work well for me and using the cheapest disks ( 50p bulk paq) ive burned about 25 disks and no coasters, i tried to copy ps2 on the fly with nero but got a message from nero complaining that as the reader and writer were on the same bus that this wasn't a good idea, so using record now max for ps2 and burned about a dozen disk but no coasters,

all the burned dvd's work on the following:
pacific
acoustic solutions ( 2 models)
sony dav s800
therefore i would have to say im very happy with my new drive and wouldn't hesitate to give it 10+ out of 10 ?
the firmware version out of the box for me was ver 1.0e

After waiting a 7 week delay, I finally got my Sony DRU400a 2 weeks ago. I did a lot of research on DVD-+RW drives before I decided on this on, and I have to say I am extremely happy with it. No coasters yet. My setup:
<br><br>
- used TDK 2x DVD-R and Sony DVD+RW<br>
- Nero 5.5.10.0<br>
- Nero InCD<br>
- Firmware "e"<br>
- Windows 2000 Server SP3<br>
<br><br>
All of the TDKs have worked flawlessly in my stand-alone Panasonic DVD player and in DVD-ROM drives in other computers.

10 out of 10.

New firmware upgrade is available 1.0g, it should improve read functionality. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm

I've been using this drive since December 21, 2002 and have had absolutely no problems with cheap Ritek 1x DVD-R media, which actually records at 2x on the DRU500A.

Great writer!
Tested all formats! +/-R/RW various brands (Philips, Sony, Verbatim)
All without any coasters!
Gonna upgrade now to firmware 1.0g for 4x +R/RW speed.
This is a MUST for everybody.

I should give this (second) drive a 10 as it works superbly right out of the box. 10 burns, no coasters; even on two home movie projects that were 4.4 gigs. The only reason I don't give it a 10 is that the first one I bought at Frys (opened box - live and learn!!!!!!!) blew up my power supply and burned my 512k memory. Frys replaced the drive of course but not my power supply and memory. So it cost me over $100 to get it right. The replaced drive was newly arrived, unopened, installed and worked right out of the box!

I have now burned over 100 DVDs.. some days 5 or 10 one right after another. Not a SINGLE bad burn. Not a single coaster, not even when using the cheapest possible media I could find.

Just got the drive tonight. I really wanted to get the external but they are very hard to find (at least the week I spent looking). So let me say that my solution was to get a 1394 Firewire drive enclosure for $50. I didn't care a squat about USB 2.0, so it worked out anyway.

After reading comments on this site, I decided I was not getting anything but this Sony drive. Everything else seems riddled with problems, but not this one. This is going to sound Mac-commercial-esque, but I'm going to say it anyway...I don't have to worry about it, it just works.

I've burned on Fuji DVD+R/DVD+RW 2.4x and I have yet to make a place to put my coffee down on (aka: haven't burned a coster). This drive is so sweet you have to clean up the little spot of honey that it leaves when you move it.

If you're looking for a DVD burner, don't look any further. Just buy the thing. I got mine at BestBuy, their last one.

Got mine 5 weeks ago and burned aprox. 25 DVD-R with it and no coasters (3 diff brands, Princo - 3T PRO - Memorex). Just loading up Nero Express and add vob files and burn....can't get much easier than that.
I'm really happy with my Sony!

After burning 75 DVDs without a coaster, I've come into a conclusion.
12 Reason Why I like my Sony DRU500a more than my girlfriend.

12 ) The Sony will not complain of a headache and will put out anytime, anyday of the week. Translation - No coaster. It loves any disk you use. DVD-R DVR+R, any brand and writes it flawlessly.

11) My Sony cost less to maintain. Once installed, you don't have to buy it gifts or flowers after 3 months or 1 year after installation date.

10) The Sony closes and opens at your will. Nuff said.

9)Once the Sony has done it's business, it will not talk back to you.

8) I can make my Sony the Master or a Slave. Either way, it burns a DVD.

7) I can upgrade at no additional costs or worry. If you upgrade to a 1.0f firmware, you can always go back to the previous firmware.

6) My Sony won't get mad if I cheat. With my Sony, I can use any software I like and if I don't like it I can always use another software.

5) It won't complain if I go slow, or speed up. My Sony can burn 2x, 2.4X, or 4x and it still gets the job done.

4) I can burn a disc faster the she can dress up for a date. To be exact; 2-3 Full 4GB disks.

3) The Sony will not complain if you are cheap. Feed it an el cheapo disk and it will like it just as much as any expensive disk.

2) I can always say the "L" word without pressure. I Love my Sony. Love it!

1) If I don't like my Sony, I can always return it. No hard feelings to hurt and it will not force me to commit. Not only that, I get all of my money back.

I have had the Sony DRU500 drive for about 2 months.I had to wait on dell to send it becuase they were out of stock. Anyway a word to the wise. My drive worked flawlessly until the other night when trying to burn a DVD-R. Drive is completely dead, motor will not spin up.
I contacted Sony support and they told me to download the drive test utility. I ran the utility but it could not diagnose because the drive motor will not spin up to read the disc. I hope this is not the fate of others who have paid good money for new technology. I am curious if sony released the 500AX because of this possible premature failure. Sony support told me 6-8 weeks for service, so now I am the proud owner of the Cendyne A05 from Office Max. I will decide which drive I will keep if and when I get my Sony repaired.

Good Luck to all!

I just installed my dru500a with a minor plastic guard removal to my Dell 8200. The drive wouldn't open with it on. (No biggy) This is my first DVD/rw and so far so good. It recorded data at 2x on 1x Ritek silver and purple DVD-r using Nero 5.5.10.0 with the 10.f firmware. I want to thank everyones reviews. This is a great burner.

4 words- IT ROCKS MY WORLD

This DVD burner is the bomb baby! I bought it online to replace my Pioneer A05 (Pioneer is a good burner, but the company controls the drive's every moves) - if you had the A05, you know what I mean.

Back to the Sony:
It support DVD+R and -R which is good in the future. With the 1.0f firmware, I haven't made a coaster yet. It burns a full DVD disc faster than my girlfriend can dress up before a date. Feed the DRU500A any disks and it likes everyone of them. It's not the best looking drive (faceplate), but it does its job and I can't complain. The software bundle are not all that other than Recordnow. This sony is the most sought after DVD burner in the market and well worth every penny.

Got it today at circuit city. I install it with no problem. I backup about 10 dics so far. Like some of my dvd, xbox games and so forth. This is a really good dvd writer. it took me about two months to find this writer. It is worth the wait. If you see it get it with the quickness.

Finally! Found a unit sitting on a shelf at the local BestBuy. I have been looking everywhere for this particular drive since early November. It was always out of stock, and on backorder, but I can say the wait was worth it. Even though it looks like it will be replaced by the "AX" model, I'm glad I purchased it. I have made Data CD's, Backed up a DVD movie, Created a DVD-RAM, and a couple of DVD-MP3's without a coaster! (much more than I can say my success was with my CD Burner's). I installed the "1f" firmware update without a hitch. I've used Roxio's Easy CD Creater Ver.5 software, Nero's Burn Ahead Software and DVDXCopy, all without any problems.

The only complaint I have is with the bundled software that comes with it. NO REAL DOCUMENTATION, only very basic pictograph foldout sheet, with brief explanation of the the software and what it does for documentation. I've installed it (except for the DLA, which conflicts with Roxio), but if I don't use it in the next couple of months, it'll be uninstalled. If you don't have any software capable of doing what you want, I guess the bundle would have some value, but I would bet you'll purchase something else to use with the drive.

The bright side is that I didn't buy the unit for the software, so it will not lower my rating of the unit. I highly recommend this unit to anyone that's looking for a DVD burner. There are definately cheaper units out there (as well as more expensive), but this is one of the best values I've come across in several years of working with PC's and peripherals.

Finally got my drive today, after waiting for 50 days from Dell. Though Circuit City had it for $349 locally...decided to wait it out from Dell for $50 less and no sales tax.
Can't wait to get started with it.
