It's very good burner.I have had it since three months.I burn only cheap -R media.I haven't coaster yet.I burned about 150 DVDs.I use Creation,Multidisc and Princo. The burner is very relaible. It burns also Ritek at 4x but I had to move it on separate IDE channel and firmware 1.0d.I burned 5 Riteks at 4x.No problems at all.

I live in Brazil.
I waited 2 months for that drive Sony DRU-500A.
Today I updated the firmware for version 2.0f
I already burned 10 cheap mídias, everything well up to now.
I liked that drive a lot.
I advise for any one that this thinking about buying.

OK, first bought a DRU-500AX direct from Sony Germany.
This drive was "Dead On Arrival" but Sony took it back without any problems, they even paid all of the shipping.
two days ago I bought a new DRU-500AX from a local discount PC warehouse. So far I have burnt 10 DVD+R and about 25 DVD-R. Not a single error. I have backed-Up movie DVD, created picture DVDs, and created my own DVD movies from my video camera.
Everything is working great, I wish I bought it sooner.
Additionally, the external sony 500 cost too much so I bought my own External Firewire case and mounted the 500AX (ide internal) drive in it. I have written DVDs from my home PC, work PC, and my Laptop. It is wonderful.

Ok here's the low down on this particular drive from Sony. First I have to say that I usually either love a product or I can live without it. This product happens to be one of the ones that I can not live without. When I first got this drive about 6 months ago, I had no problems using general DVD-R's from Americal(1x, very slow). I finally made it through that stack with gray hairs and I ordered a pack of Ritek's. I was very relieved to find that they burned twice as fast. The only problem that I ever had with this drive was with a bad batch of DVD-R's from Ritek. I bought a 50pack and out of that, maybe 15 just would'nt burn. This wasnt any fault of the drive but the media itself. All in all I would still recommend this as the most solid purchase for anyone ready to jump into the world of DVD-Authoring. As a plus, the new firmware allows DVD+R's to be burned at higher rates also. so both formats can be burned at 4x with the correct media of course. And as always there is always room for better improvement. The only thing I sort of dislike is the slow reading speeds whenever I use Ritek's. Whenever I use them in my Lite-On to make an ISO or something it always fails, whenever I use them in the Sony, the highest read speed I get is 2x. I've wondered alot what the oroblem could be for that, but oh well. I love the Sony DRU-500A and when I my new PC in the fall I plan on getting another one for that one also. Try it, if you don't like it then PM me and I'll buy it from you :).

The drive is real bad........No burning support for Ritek G04 burning is limited to x2 on this media. Firmware 1.0d which is a big backwards leap in firmware will write at x4 on Ritek G04 for most ppl, but limits G03 media to write @ x1. Avoid this writer if you know what your doing, if your a casual user without a clue i doubt your even care or know what the fook im talking about.

Great drive, great price ! No problems with recording quality DVD media. I used TDK DVD+-R (2/2.4x), PHILIPS DVD+R (2.4x), eProfomance DVD+R (1x).
After purchase download the last firmware (current is 2.0f).
A small lack - not support CD-overburn.

I've had this drive for about 6 months now. I originally installed it in a system that I was using for other encoding/decoding functions but moved it to a dedicated PC with a minimal OS build and application software to isolate any .dll issues. No issues burning the Verbatim + or - media in RNM 4.56. Nero locks at the point where is closes the lead out on all media. Saw this error posted by several others and apparently there is no resolution. I made a big mistake and bought a 100 pack of the Accu (Lead Data) media and had horrible results even at 1x. The failures were sporadic and I ended up with about 25/50 bad DVD's. I tried all the firmware revs. in an effort to solve this, but in the end I eventually sent them back to Meritline for a refund. I also picked up some of the CompUSA media and after getting coasters with 5/10, I returned the remaining 20 for a full refund. Good media has never failed in this drive. I got some DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-RW from Memorex a few weeks ago and have had good results.

First would like to just say thanks to everyone giving feedback in these forums. You helped me make a great choice.

This writer rocks. You come to expect great quality with sony and you get it with this drive. It may cost a bit more but well worth it.

Ive been using it now for a few months. Coasters just don't happen. Even while putting load on machine with other apps running etc its very happy. Burns anything from cdr to dvd+r its great.

As said before learning curve is not with drive but media. That was a nightmare. It took me a long time to figure out the best media regardless of help here or in forums. You just need to try for yourself as some media works in some players and not others.

I finally opted for RITEK with its organic dye stuff. These disks are great for me and work in almost every dvd player ive tried including ps2, xbox. Panasonic dvd players are a bit weird with them so be warned :-)

I use apps like nero and fireburner (latest versions) and both work happy with this great wee drive.

Great drive. Highly recommended A+++. You won't be disappointed.

PS i went a little mad and bought a few too many Riteks dvd-r's so if anyone wants to buy some from me (uk) please email.

Perfect drive!
The only problem that I've had so far are Memorex dvd-r/rw's, they don't work even after firmware upgrade etc.

Alright. I've had this for about 6 months now. The learning curve on the drive itself is basically nil. The learning curve on the how-to's, however, is insanely insane.

I love what the drive can do. I don't love how long the burning process takes. Copying already-made DVD's, though, is a snap.

Don't complain if you havn't gotten the firmware first. DVD disk compatability has been great for me. All the cheapest ones I've found so far have worked fine.

Happy with this unit. Ritec DVDs and Samsung BeAll no coasters (over 100 successful 4.7 GB DVD burns), 15 bad out of 28 disks in a Meriline DVD 4.7 GB 50 pk (returning batch). Burned mostly -R, some +R and -RWs. My Panasonic Home Theater DVD player and Sony NC655 DVD player reads/plays everything perfectly.

Had issue with CDR audio, one CD player couldn't play/find/load first track, three other CD players could. Burned another disk with another computer/CD burner and then worked ok. Other 50+ CDR burns (both audio and MP3) all play fine everywhere.

Have had my DRU500A for +/- 3weeks, and had endless problems writing to cheap (DVD-R Media for General Purpose), could not even do a test burn. Finally out of desperation I re-installed XP SP1, and also upgraded the drive’s firmware to 2.0e from the Sony website. This seems to have done the trick.

Successfully burned and played home video onto Samsung BeAll DVD-R from Meritline using Sony DRU-500A onto Sony DVP-S300. Kypermedia DVD-R DOES NOT work. Had problems with Memorex DVD-R as well.

This burner was given to me as a gift for X-mas 2002 by my wife. I kind of hinted on what I wanted. I have so far burned 1 DVD from some video I took of a Retirement ceremony. I captured/edited the video with Pinnacle Studio Version 7 and made a mpeg file to Hard disk then Used MySonic DVD software to burn on to Ritek DVD-R. It worked like a charm. I played it on my Panasonic RV65 DVD player, there were no glitches or skips. No DVD+RW yet but will as soon as the price comes down on the discs. I bought the package(100) of Ritek for $43.00 at computere show. This is a good burner and was well worth the money she paid for it.

Have had mine about a week now.
So far no problems whatsoever (1.1g firmware).
Have burned TDK DVD-R and Memorex DVD+RW

EasyCD 5.3.4.21 works.
Nero 5.5.10.7 works.
Ulead Movie Factory 2 works.
DVD Decrypter works.

I got my DRU500A about a month ago and I'm pretty darn happy. I bought cheap KHypermedia DVD-Rs at MicroCenter and they would always coaster at the same point. Then I got really lucky and stocked up on Imation DVD+RW 25-pack spindles at CompUSA for $59.99 per spindle. That's $2.10 each. Sweeeeet. They work absolutely fine. Not a single coaster, and when they are +RW, who would care anyway?!? :-) I encode with TMPGEnc and author with MyDVD. The resulting DVD+RWs play just fine in my Toshiba SD3800 and my Mintek DVD-1600 players.

I'm giving it only a 9 rating because it may not like cheap -R,+R media.

(I'm sticking with the 1.0f firmware that it came with until my paranoia subsides. It seems like some guys have issues when they upgrade to 1.0g.)

Thanks DVDRHelp, you guys rock!!

3 weeks ago I purchased a Sony from www.nexus22.com they are currently out of stock but what I though was a nice tough the guy I spoke to was happy to move on the price if I bought some media as well. I think it is a very good writer for what it is. I have owned a pioneer 105 and I hate to say this as I was always a true pioneer fan its crap even with the firmware update 1.21. Ok the Sony will not see really cheap media but it will write x2 speed on 2 speed media which the pioneer struggles to do

I received my Sony DRU500A as a gift for Christmas 2002. I have flash it twice to Ver f and than Ver g. All I have to say is it kicks ASS! I also have a TDK 48X12X48, Plextor 48X24X48, HP 8100. But I have not needed to use those Drives since I got this DVD Burner. I have used Sony DVD-R&RW, Memorex DVD-R&RW/CD-R 48X 700MB/CD-RW 4X 700MB ,Accu DVD-R,TDK CD-R 48X,no DVD+ Media yet because of cost. So far no coaster's and no Read Error's. So far, I have back-up about 20 DVD Movie's. 6 Movie's with Memorex DVD-R, and 14 with Accu DVD-R. That's about 40 DVD disk's. Two for each Movie. And they work in any DVD player. I use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5-DirectCD for the RW Disk, work's like a floppy-outstanding! I used Drive Image 2002, but it's not 100%, work's more like 5% of the time for CD disk Image back-up's on most CD Writer's. But Norton Ghost 2003, work's outstanding for a 4.7GB DVD Image Back-up.Instead of using 6 CD Disk, I do a image back with 1 DVD disk.Used Sony DVD-RW and Memorex DVD-RW for Image back-ups,and it work's 100% with Norton Ghost 2003 on Win 2K. This Drive does it all, with out any headache's. I love this Burner, and I think it's the Latest and Greatest Burner out there right now. And one more thing-(Join the Boycott against Product Activation Software)It's Software with a bug in it. Scamware.

I tried two units. I burned a -RW with the first one (the reason I bought the drive). After my DVD authoring software (Dazzle DVD Complete) finished with no errors, I then tried to read the disc but discovered there were no files. As the +RW function worked, I knew it was not software. I exchanged the drive, and the replacement worked in both +R and -R modes. Although it seems to work well with DVD functions, it failed attempting to restore an image backup created with PowerQuest Drive Image 2002 on standard CDs, that was written by this drive. The DRU500A would not read the CDs that it created, with no error condition evident during the write. A friend of mine has the same drive and it fails the same way. Now the interesting part, I restored my system with my Memorex DVD+RW/+R, which successfully read the CDs created by the Sony, that the Sony drive itself would not read. $350 is too much money for a drive that cannot read its own backup images. I wanted -R capability, but I am returning the DRU500A and keeping my Memorex DVD+R/+RW for $150 less. It's reliable for my image backups, and I'll buy a desktop DVD player that will read +RW DVDs with the $150 and have change left over.

Very good drive, no problems with the install, or the software.

Burned three movies from a DVD-R I already have onto Mirror DVD-R using Nero 5.5.
Works fine with Hitachi DVP250E.

Just wish it was black and silver, not that nasty biege !

Good Luck

I've updated my firmware to 1.0g and the reading permormance really increased !

I had DVD-R for 2x speed, with the firmware 1.0f the Sony didn't recognize it as a 2 speed disc.

Now with the new firmware, problem solved !

I've bured over 20 backups now, perfect burner !!

kind regards, Niels

Been looking for this drive in the UK for sometime (most sites appear to be out of stock) but stumbled across one in our local PC shop a fortnight ago.

Prefer to use Nero for burning (hence 9/10), recently got a trail pack of various DVD-R’s (http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/cgi-bin2/cdrmedia/details.pl?id=trial) results as follows with burning DVD videos and playing on my PC, XBOX, DVD - YELO 800 & PS2 (1st release UK version):

Zero Defex "Pure Purple" x1 : PC-OK; XBOX-OK; DVD-OK; PS2-Disc Read Error
Zero Defex "Silver Label" x1 : ===============COASTER==============
Paradox x1 : PC + XBOX + DVD + PS2 - Plays OK, but locks when skipping between chapters
BulkPaq x1 : PC + XBOX + DVD - Plays OK, but locks as above; PS2-Disc Read Error
Vertatim x2 : PC-OK; XBOX-OK; DVD-OK; PS2-OK
TDK x2 : PC-OK; XBOX-OK; DVD-OK; PS2 - Plays OK, but locks as above
Maxwell x2 : PC-OK; XBOX-OK; DVD-OK; PS2 – Disc Read Error
Intenso x1 : PC-OK; XBOX-Plays OK, but locks as above; DVD-OK; PS2-Disc Read Error
Bulkpaq x2 : PC-OK; XBOX-OK; DVD-OK; PS2-OK

Hope the above may be of help - would like to hear other media experiences.

Bought my 500A at Best Buy last friday.

So far so good.

I made it Master and my regular CD burner Slave.

XP pro Service Pack 1 already had all the driver that this little savage needed.

I installed "Record Now" and "MyDVD" from the CD that came with it.

I did the update to bring the +R burning speed up to 4x - no problem.

I've burned both +R and -R DVD data disks with "Record Now" and could read them on the DVD drive I have on another PC at work.

I've burned both +R and -R DVD movie disks with "MyDVD" and watched them on my TV using my Sony dvp ns315 DVD player. - I guess the real test here will be when I try them on something other than a Sony player.

I've burned data to a plain old CD in my 500A, was able to read it on 2 other pc's.

I haven't done anything with DVD RW's yet.

Normally I like to complain about something but I can't find anything about this DVD burner to complain about.

I've got 50 cheepo -R DVD coming - then the fun begins :-)

Have gone thru 2 units so far, used the drive check program from the web site and both failed.I tried every patch and the units straight out of the box would not read any discs, I couldn't even load the driver discs for all the bundled software. I think standalone is my only option.
