My 1st DVD burner and I bought it oem manufactured in Noverember 2003 with A301 firmware, the shop who sold me it, gave me two disk one 4X Princo DVD-R and one 2X Vakorass DVD-R. Both turn out coaster, burned DVD files onto the Vakorass without knowing I had to make an audio and video folder so it was not the burner fault, the Princo DVD-R 4x won't start burning but it turn out to be a bad media.

Anyway, flashed to A302 firmware and burning with Memorex (CMC) 4X DVD+R and -R without any problem at 4X and I must say this is a very good burner for its price.

Looking for cheaper media, may try Princo 4X DVD-R when my Memorex ran out.

Great burner.
I have it for half a year by now (Dec 2003) and I have not made one DVD-R coaster (that would be of burner's fault that is). All DVD-Video burnt with this drive using Nero 5.5, DVD Decrypter, CloneDVD (Elby's - not the other one) and TMPEG's DVD Writing Tool - they play flawlessly on all of my standalones (DVD-Videos that are DVD-R based, I dont use DVD+R at all).
DVD-RAM support is great, however only the 3x Maxell disc (included with drive) writes at this speed, all other ones write at various speed rangng from less than 1x to about 2x (I guess it depends on media's brand).
Option to write videocaptured DVD-Video off my ATI A-I-W Radeon directly to DVD-R/RW using included NeoDVD is very handy. However I wish NeoDVD had a timer to setup future recording. Also presets for capturing quality are not customizable (you get "best" & "medium" quality options - and medium quality is too low to my taste). But these are concerns regarding included software not the drive, thus I stop right here.

CD writing isnt exactly 24x as it is advertised. This drive writes at slower speed for about half the disc, reaching 24x only at the last half or last 1/3 portion of the disc it is writing. But average speed of 16x CD-R writing speed (or slightly more, about 18x IIRC) is not bad for a dvd-writer at all.
It also writes correctly all "protected" modes (EFM etc), and has no problems with 90 and 99 min long CD-Rs.

Out of few DVD-R drives I had in past 2 years this one is so far the best.

To summon it up:
Great burner for great price. Highly recommended.

Well, since this is my first DVD writer, it is hard to make a rating when I have nothing else to compare it to...

But, as for my experiences, I am so far quite satisfied with this model. Since buying this unit 3 weeks ago, I've burned close to 40 disks, on Maxell -R 4x media, and a few on Maxell -rw media without any problems. No coasters, all burns were flawless when played back on a stand-alone player, or in the pc.

Price was right, too - $115cad after rebate from FutureShop in Canada.

I own other LG drives (dvd-rom, cd-r), and have never experienced any problems with either of them. I figure that for what I paid, using one of those credit cards that doubles the warranty period, I'm good for at least the next 2 years. And we all know that in 2 years, this will become a dinosaur and it will be time to look at new technology once again

I've liked the cost benefit of LG(+Hitachi) drives in the last 3 years, but I'm a "bit" disappointed with the reliability of those drives.

I've had many failed drives 1xCDRW(8320)(1 out of 2), 3x Combos(4320B)(3 out of 5), that stop working, and now 3x GSA-4040B (out of 3!) with out of spec behavior.

The 4040B always burns good DVDs (till now), but become blind to certain medias, burn bad CDs with good media, and cant sustain the specified speed.
Worst of all - each drive has it's own set of problems.

I won't rate it cause lack of reliability means 0 !
Shold LG explain and correct I'll give it a 9 - not 10 cause CD specs ain't good, although cost benefit is a 10.

As it's not the first time I'm writing this...

I'm reposting this report for the second time to give accurate info based on Lab experience with those drives down here in South America.
(original post at
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=15130 http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=101376#101376)

Unfortunately, I'll have to contradict you, as the problem IS NOT between the chair and the keyboard. (We do say so of our users most of the time....)

That's the previous post:

"Hi Folks, maybe this thread should be named LG DVD Blues ....

BEWARE: LG DRIVES FAIL and Have INCONSISTENT BEHAVIOR!

I Had access to try and test 3 different 4040B drives made in july, august and september 2003. ALL OF THEM ARE PROBLEMATIC.
The one from july came with firmware version 1.01, and the other 2 with A300.
I have tested them with firmware versions A300, A301 and A302. Most tests with A301.

Tested with different media with
GOOD RESULTS:
DVD-R [ProdiscS03 4x; PRINCO 4x; maxell MXL RG01 (MasterG 2x); CMC MAG.(Samsung 2x); BeALL(LG 4x); RITEKG03(Imation2x); OPTODISCK001 (noname2x); PRODISCG02(SmartBuy 2x); etc.]
DVD+R [RICOHJPN R00 2.4x (Imation), PRODISC R01 +R (Princo)] ;
DVD+RW [RICOHJPN W01 2.4x(HP,Imation) ; CMC MAG W01 2.4x (Imation,Samsung)].

BAD RESULTS:
DVD-R [Yi Jhan 001 (NoName 2x)-writes ok, reads ok on 4040B, reads poorly on many drives and stand alone DVD Players];
DVD+RW [PRODISC W01 2.4x(LC)-writing: uncorrectable bad blocks-unusable]

Sorry, No DVD-RW or DVD-RAM data for now.

All of the 3 drives write good, readable disks (without damaged sectors, tested with nero cd-speed), but only one drive (the august built) could sustain 4x writing.
The other 2 would have a kind of erratic speed ranging typically from less than 1.4x to 1.9x in a continuous up and down when writing 4x media at 4x. (The other one writes at a 4x strite).

After checking everything else I simply exchanged drives and those problems where not machine/cfg/sw/fw dependent just drive dependent.
(Same media, same machine, config, firmware, etc., just exchanged drives!)

The one that writes ok DVD-R @ 4x can't write good CDs. It will burn Sony 32x and Imation (CMC) 48x media with damaged blocks. The media is excellent, with near 0 errors in any drive tested till now - more than a dozen types.

Sometimes exchanging media types would make the drives blind for some type of media, usually DVD+RW. Powering off and on again would correct this.

Had Opportunity to briefly test a 4081B. It was able to read -R ProdiscS03, +R Imation/Ricoh, and failed to recognize a +RW (CMC,Samsung) recorded with Philips DVDR75 (not edited) saying it was a BLANK DISK, updating the firmware to the newest one (only on the korean LG site http://www.lge.co.kr/library/opendata.jsp?p_name=1076053797761GSA-4081A101(kw).zip) made no good, while the disk would happily play on an LG4480B, or any other DVD-ROM, on HP DVD 100i, and even in my own 4040B ... even though it would read other medias, my friend is returning the drive and wouldn't even bother to test writing speeds...
The power toggling that worked for the 4040B didn't make any difference with this 4081B problem.

Other LG drives as the combo GCC-4320B had failed at an astonishing rate. 3 out of 5 dead, mine and from friends with technical skills. The 2 surviving ones practically aren't used, may have burned less than 10 medias ....
I'd say one just need to start the countdown... and the drive's optics will blast. What was a cheap decent choice has turned very expensive.
And I'm back with old trustworthy HP9500i (12x non-brurnproof CD-R), while my old HP 4x drives given away are still in a daily use ....

Those faulty drives were bought from multiple sources. No correlation between source and defect.

I'd appreciate to know if that happens to everybody or we're having such a tremendous (improbable) bad luck, and those of you evaluating those drives BE WARNED: Till LG explains and recall the faulty ones everybody is at risk!

Have burnt one only DVD-R disk successfully. This thing even makes coasters out of DVD-RW and DVD+RW. Thinking it was a mobo incompatibility I installed in an external USB2.0/IEEE box - no difference. Did a clean install of win2k and slightly more success but no DVD-R burnt in this thing will verify and playback quality in DVD player hopeless. Still making coasters. Swapped unit for another. No difference. Replaced with Sony DRU-510AK and all is ok with same media brands. No coasters - no issue in DVD player. Do not touch LG!

Great Device.
I have updated firmware with "The Dangerous Brothers" RPC-I firmware based on official fw vA302 (http://tdb.rpc1.org/index.htm#GSA4040B), and work fine.

So thanks to "The Dangerous Brothers".

Work perfectly with NERO 6 (and AnyDVD)

Great unit. Have burned roughly 20 DVD. Mostly DVD-R, el-cheapo Pine 2X media, no problems at all. Tried some Mitsumi 2.4x DVD+RW and Memorex DVD+RW 4X, burned fine, but memorex dvd+rw was recognized by Nero 6.3.0.2 as 2.4x only (no biggie anyhow). Firmware is at A302. Only gripe about it, is that it does NOT allow bitsetting to change the booktype for DVD+R(W) like some of the NEC, LiteON and Ricoh based drives do, therefore many of the older DVD players (including the LG 8160B) cannot read the DVD+RW burned on this unit.

Hopefully LG enables the bitsetting for changing booktye on DVD+R(W) on a future firmware update [wishful thinking].

Anyone has tested the new BETA rpc1 firmware for the LG 4040b? I would like to known if it is working right and what software is needed to change the region number (maybe just WinXP is enough, but I´m not sure).

The firmware is based on A302 and is available at:

Very decent multiformat DVD burner indeed. No single CD/DVD coster nor technical problems since i've purchased it (mid December 2003, my first DVD burner BTW). Readibility of burned discs was always perfect even with lower grade media like Princo or Gigamaster. Well the burner sometimes refuses full 4x burning on media with certain ADIPs, but it's getting better and better with every firmware release.

For those who can't live with region protection (RPC-II) The Dangerous Brothers have made available a patched RPC-I firmware based on official fw vA302. You can get a beta (consider twice before flashing) version here http://tdb.rpc1.org/index.htm#GSA4040B

A truly spectacular machine. Every media I threw at it burned without problem despite some 4x media only working at 2x - even on a low-spec PC!!

My only gripe is that there is no firmware patch available to convert this drive to region-0.

Using Nero 6.0.0.19 and various DVD software for authoring.

Flash new Firmware !
I got one of the first 4040 in Germany half a year ago, started with Firmware A104, burnt a mediocre bunch of DVD-Video. Most of them were readable on Computer drives, but the compatibility among standalone DVD-Players was poor, about 50%, depending on speed and type of media. No media manufacturer turned out to be the safest one.
Now Flash ! I updated to A 301, and a complete different picture ! All types, all speeds turn out to be readable in standalones, even +Rs became readable in -R only (TOSHIBA) notebook drives !
Now happy with 4040. Look forward to the new 8/8/4/4 drive by LG. (very unhappy at the moment with NEC ND2500A V1.06 . Can it read DVD-RW ? It can not ! See comment there.

Have had this burner for a few months, very solid unit. My comment/question to the experts out there, I have been waffling between different medias, PINE, E3. Usually the burner maxes out at 2X even with update A302, I recently got some Princo 4x dvd- and they burnt at 4X, but, the discs burning at 2X take 29 min or so and the Princo at 4X took 37 min or so using Nero 6.0. Any suggestions or input you can provide as to why 4X is slower than 2X...

I've been using this drive for 40 days and have burnt 160 discs Princo 4x DVD-R with no coasters and also using Optodisc 2.4x DVD+RW several write/erase cycles with no problems. I was only able to burn at 2x on the Princo's until I upgraded the firmware to 301. I paid $146CDN in Toronto. Rating of 9 because firmware update was needed for full functionality, but drive otherwise performs as intended, without fail. Look forward to trying out the 4081B and some 8x media.

In response to Steve, I've been using some BeAll 1-4X DVD-R disk and have been burning at 4X with no problem. I did have one disk that stuttered real badly at the end of a movie. I set the max file size to 4.399 GB and since then no problems. Might just have been that one disk. I love this burner and have been using DVD Shrink and Nero 6.0

So far no real problem or incompatability with the cheap/no brand media I am using. It is a improvement over my pioneer A103 that I was using.

Unfortunately it is not compatible with Max RecordNow or Prassi Primo or Discjuggler that I used before. It works well with Nero and Alcohol 120%

Pretty good drive, some slight compatability issues while playing DVD+R (RICOHJPNR01) burned at 4x on standalone dvd player.

Since my upgrade to firmware A302, DVD-R are not writeable at 4x. Are there more people who encounter this problem? I contacted the LG helpdesk by e-mail, but they don't answer :(

I have had this drive for about a week now.
I have succesfully backed up 3 movies using DVD X Copy for 2 of them and cladDVD/TMPGEnc Author for the other.
All worked flawlessly!!!!
Perfect.
However, Prassi will not recognize the drive at all, which is a problem for me because that is the program I prefer for making VCD's.
nero 5.x.x.xx does not recognize the drive properly (identifies it as cd-r image device) and will not burn anything on it -- no music cd's, data cd's, DVD's, VCD's, nuthin'....
Additionally, Windows MediaPlayer 9 doesn't recognize it properly either. It also sees the drive as a cd-r and won't burn music cd's with it.

I am really stumped as to what I should do to rectify this problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
I will probably upgrade to nero 6.x.x.x, but that won't solve the MediaPlayer issue (tho nero DOES now support wma...).

When I installed the DVD RAM drivers, my PC freaked out and wouldn't let me shut-down. I had to do a hard power down and reboot, then I got error messages from Windows concerning the issue of not being able to burn cd's with the DVD RAM drivers installed, and also a generic error from Norton. Neither error message would go away and I couldn't get rid of them through taskmanager either.
I uninstalled the DVD RAM drivers & it's all good now (except for the cd issues!)

Overall, I give this drive an 8.
If I can get it to burn cd's I'll change my score to a 15!! :)

As others have mentioned, I too am VERY impressed with this drives speed and the fact that it is SO quiet.

Hello Fonger!

You wrote:

>Any help most appreciated.

So here goes:

Start installing VIAHyperion4in1451v (or the version that you have got from http://www.viaarena.com)

At the window, after the readme section:

Check option "Normal installation"

Next window:

UNCHECK option: "Via PCI IDE BUS Driver"
Check option: "AGP Driver (AGP 3.0 Support)"
Check option: "VIA INF Driver"

Next window:

Check option "Install AGP Driver"

That should do it.

The install program will detect which version of Windows you are have.

I'm running Win2000, and there is different drivers installed from what will be installed under Win98SE, according to the readme section text. But you still will have the option not to install the "Via PCI IDE BUS Driver"

I hope this description will be considered a step by step explanation:-)

Best wishes

A step by step would be great, on how the solution worked for you. This would more than likely be helpful for me and others. Do you mind? Any help most appreciated.

Had problems with burning CD's, mentioned here, by me, some weeks ago.

I have found the solution. It is mentioned in the Readme2K.txt file, shown to you when installing the dvd driver.

The Readme2k.txt file is placed in the dir. where DVD-RAM Driver is installed.

I have a VIA chipset on my "old" Epox 8KTA3+ MB.
When I installed VIA's 4 in 1 packet, I used to let the installer replace the default Window drivers.

After deselecting the IDE driver (keeping Win2000 default driver) the problem has gone.

Here is a clip from the Readme2K.txt:

----------------------------- // ----------------------------

2. The limitation on ATAPI interface connection
Some device drivers which are released by chipset vendor for IDE controller on the PC may cause trouble to connect ATAPI drive to the IDE interface.
Please use OS default IDE driver.

------------------------------ // ------------------------

Not a clear explanation IMHO, to the problem I had, but anyway: That did it:-)

Kind regards
