I bought this 25 DVD+RW spindle on 6 Feb 2005 for the unbeatable price of $8.99 (special discount from manager due to a problem I had had earlier, not DVD-related).

They are CompUSA brand name DVD+RWs (Manufacturer Name: FMI), for my standalone Zenith DVR-413 -- which reads all formats (DVD-+R/+-RW). I had to have a firmware update from Zenith to read/record Memorex brand DVD discs, but once I did, I was very satisfied with both the DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.

Being a newbie to recording DVDs, and not much experience with any brand other than Memorex as yet (with the exception of the two LG brand DVD-Rs included with the recorder, which were great and quite compatible, obviously), I didn't think it would make THAT much difference which brand I bought.

I must say, I am still sniffing this brand out, but so far, I notice a salient difference: with the Memorex DVD-RW, I am able to use an Edit function called "Delete".

That isn't available in the CompUSA DVD+RW, though it does allow access to the Edit function -- it offers "Hide", "Divide", but not the all-important (for me) "Delete", which I use to edit out commercial breaks in daily programmes.

Perhaps a technicality, and for all I know, all DVD+RWs are like that, and not just the CompUSA one, but I did want to mention it here, in case someone else needs it.

Other eccentricities I notice is that one has to format the discs, as it won't play out of the box. That's fine. But it makes a root menu with "Empty Title" (hour of blank space available, such as 6h7m), something not present in my Memorexes. It also doesn't allow for the Playlist function to work, also unlike the Memorexes.

As to quality, it varies. I have digital cable, and a brand-new DVD-R which is a joy to own (you can cross-reference my review in the other forum). The quality should be crisp, but there is a noticeable lack of crispness with these blank media discs. It's not bad, yet it's not the best, even for a high-volume data disc.

Listen, one can't complain for 25 discs at $8.99, but this is about information, as much as critique.

If you can get it for the $14.99 usual price, it's still worth it I suppose, but I think I'll stick to the Memorexes for until I get more comfortable.

Cheers,
Victoria

bought a 5 pack from CompUSA for $13 (including tax). sku #302419. brought home and learned the discs were optidisc (grrr!).

tested every disc by writing 4.7 GB of data (in 5 files; 1 GB x 4 + 0.7 GB), mounting the disc, producing md5sum of all 5 files, and verifying md5sums to same files on my hard drive. 4 discs passed, 1 didn't. would write all the data, but upon trying to mount the disc, it was identified as blank.

read the warrantee on the back of the 5 pack. took the bad disc back to compusa the next day. customer service agent looked at me blankly when i showed him my receipt, gave him the bad disc, and told him i wanted to exchange it as per the warrantee. i retrieved a new 5 pack, he opened it, and gave me one of the discs as a replacement. got home. that one was bad too. GRRR!

next day took that one back to compusa, dealt with same customer service agent, he went into the back to retrieve another disc from the previously opened 5 pack. brought it home. this disc works.

out of 7 discs (5 original, 2 replacements), only 5 were good. 30% failure rate. and wasted an hour driving back and forth twice for the replacement discs.

sometimes noticed dvd-rom drive was really slow reading last gigabyte or so of discs.

The media does work if you get a good disc. The problem is that out of every 5 pack I have bought, at least one disc is totally and obviously screwed. There are marks all over the write surface. Not scratches but discolorations and streaks. It must be manufacturing errors. Then again CompUSA likes to put defects on the shelf. They make alot of money by counting on lazy people or lost receipts.

I have had to open each package at the register before I walk out of the store now because compUSA is horrible with returns. Atleast where I live..
