Open Tray
Press the pause button on the remote
And Lastly punch in 20110 for a ZoneFree Player and close the tray

This procedure can be done mulitple times without hurting the DVD Player/Recorder ...

You'll be able to see the preference page once you done this and select whatever region you want.

did not work

PostRegion code hack posted by 0612, December 19 2003:

Question to jaarjaar:
What was an original region setting?

PostRegion code hack posted by Ajay, December 19 2003:

Didn't work for me too. But it played SVCD, CD-R, American VCDs as well as other region VCDs.

PostOther hack posted by MJB, December 21 2003:

VCDs do not have region codes. Only DVDs have region codes.

PostOther hack posted by kimisawa, December 23 2003:

when the disc is loading, before "wrong region" is shown, press "menu" many times, this will allow you to bypass the region check.

the problem of this trick is that you won't be able to use any remote control functions(menu selecting..etc) and there's a "wrong region" message at the cornor..

but I think there must be some other way to bypass region check...hopefully someone can find it soon

ps. the region selection under the preference menu does not really work..I try a jap dvd with japanese region, didn't work..... Anyone have comments about this?

PostOther hack posted by ayahel, December 23 2003:

The region selection under the preference menu is not for the "Play region".
It is for the PG country region (it is written on the bottom of the screen).
I had the same wrong assumption as you did.

PostRegion code hack posted by kimisawa, December 26 2003:

The region hack posted under AD-1000 one can actually bring out the same region selection screen for AD-1100...the problem again, can not move cursor... but this is a big jump..hopefully someone can test it

under preference, press 1379, this will bring out a region screen...

PostRegion code hack posted by Sampath Kumar, December 30 2003:

I also did what user Kimisava mentioned. It definitely got to the Region code screen. I tried a lot after that. But couldn't edit the Region code. I hope some one is able to proceed further. All the best.

It looks like a firmware upgrade may be needed to fix this problem.
http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/players/dvep1hack.htm

Anybody with this dvd player should email aspire digital at info@aspiredigital.com asking for a firmware upgrade.

PostOther hack posted by John, January 01 2004:

I have the same problem observed by Simon above. I tried several VCD's, the screen just flickers (scrolls up and down, like there's a problem with vertical hold or something). The screen is black & white, but sound plays fine. Anybody know of a way to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

PostOther hack posted by Sampath Kumar, January 02 2004:

John,
This may be because your player is set to Auto mode, i.e it is set up for a TV, which is both NTSC and PAL compatible.
If your TV is only NTSC compatible, go to Set Up in the DVD player and set it to NTSC. It'll most probably work. It worked for me.

PostOther hack posted by Michael, January 02 2004:

I also emailed aspire about 2 days ago for a new firmware, but they havent replied back. Ive also tried calling their technical suport line but the answering machine always picks up. And yes im also having troubel with vcds (it shows them as black and white, no sound, vertical hold is weird).

PostOther hack posted by Michael, January 02 2004:

Ok for anyone with the vcd problems (black and white screen, flikering,etc) follow Sampath Kumar's advice. Go to preferences page and change the tv type from "auto" to NTSC. That fixed my problems.

Hi! Somebody found the way to change
the AD-1100 Aspire region code?

PostRegion code hack posted by thouston, January 30 2004:

I e-mailed Aspire Digital, and heard back from the gentleman asking serial number. I e-mailed that back and he replied asking for an address to mail a CD upgrade. That was today. So will watch the mail for it.

PostRegion code hack posted by Marco Castagna, February 07 2004:

Got the CD from Aspiredigital, upgraded the unit, and now from the same menu 'Region code' you can use arrows. It is just great. Set to Region Code 0, and enjoyed a Region 2 movie!

PostRegion code hack posted by Arbel, February 07 2004:

To the one who got the CD:
Who did you email to?
I tried emailing Aspire Digital about a month ago, still never heard from them.

Thanks

Can you provide copu of CD ?

PostRegion code hack posted by kimisawa, February 10 2004:

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!!

Long waiting is over, thanks for Brian Kao and thouston for uploading me files, I have the AD-1100 firmware uploaded for downloading.

http://home.comcast.net/~chienc/AspireDigital_AD1100.nrg

download the image and use Nero's "burn image" function to burn this image with DAO option. DON'T brun this file on a CD directly, remember, it's an image file.

after burning, load it to your player..now it is upgrading!
just don't interrupt while it is upgrading.

Now you can use the 1379 method on your remote to change the region code, just set it to 0. Enjoy your movies.

Once again, thanks for helps from Brian Kao and thouston.

PostRegion code hack posted by bob, February 11 2004:

I downloaded the nero image file, burn a disc in nero popped it into the dvd player and updated the firmware (it took less than 5 minutes). I entered the 1379 hack and changed the region to 0. So far I have tested region 2 and 4 dvds.

PostRegion code hack posted by Arbel, February 11 2004:

Hi Guys,
Thank you for the CD image.
I upgraded the firmware and set the region to 0.
I don't yet have other region's DVD's to play so I can't test it yet.

1 thing to notice: you can set the region code with the 1379 code only immediatelly after the upgrade.
If you turn off the player, the region code will not change later.
So that how it worked for me:
Upgrade, wait for it to finish
Press "Setup"
Use the right arrow to get to the "Preference" menu
Key in 1379 and the region menu appears
Use the arrows (I think up or down) to set the region
Press Play

At least that how it worked for me.

Good luck,
Arbel

What is amasing about this player, that it can play MPG files without creation of any VCD structure.
It understands PC folder structure.

I downloaded the upgrade, burn the cd image, played on the dvd, it asked if I wanted to upgraded, I said yes, upgrade 20 seconds then screen went black. It says "hello" on the dvd now, but I can't open the tray anymore It looks like the dvd froze. I had to open the dvd player to take the cd out, and I have to return it except if you guy have a solution to do a reset. Help.

PostRegion code hack posted by Diana, February 27 2004:

Kimisawa, thanks for posted the upgraded for A-1100. I could change the region. By the way do you know how to break the region code of panasonic s35? Thanks again.

PostOther hack posted by Duh, February 27 2004:

I had the same disastrous results as posted above by Gako. The DVD player is totally dead, except for the word "hello" on the display. The CD is inside. I'm hoping someone comes up with a recovery plan. Otherwise, $29 down the drain.

I just read the "custom.htm" in the firmware file, it says, "ES4xx8 SWAN ES60x8 Vibrato
Single-Chip DVD System Firmware Customization Notes".

It is not Mediatek. I don't have time open AD-1100 yet, maybe two versions of AD-1100? Wrong firmware results into dead machine?

PostRegion code hack posted by timmy501, March 01 2004:

Sorry to hear the bad news.

After firmware update, my firmware is actually older than yours, I don't know my original firmware version.

Original Firmware Version:
Version: 03.00.01.06.04
Sub-ver: 00.00.00.01
8032: 03.01.06.04
Servo: 40.00.CE.55
RISC: 02.01.06.04
DSP: 02.03.01.45
Resgion: 0

PostOther hack posted by ptoreport, March 01 2004:

It is interesting to look at the files that are on the upgrade disk. The upgrade disk includes not only the firmware image to load into the DVD player, but also the source code used to generate the image (they were probably not supposed to give that out). The code appears to be for a ESS Technologies chip, probably the ES4408 SWAN.

A browse through the code reveals a lot of interesting features, including the code that controls the region codes and macrovision. Also of interest is the sections of code that list MPEG4(DIVX) and AAC support. I don't know if DIVX support is compiled in the image given, but apparently a DRM key from DIVXnetworks is all that is required to activate it if that is the case.

So, as others have shown, do not use this upgrade unless you know you have the ESS chip in your player.

PostRegion code hack posted by gako, March 02 2004:

IS one of the people for who the upgrade worked can tell us which type of chip is in your DVD. It will help us. thank you.

PostRegion code hack posted by gako, March 02 2004:

I don't understand how the people used the the upgrade cd which is for a ESS 4xx8 swan combine with the 1379 code which should be for the mediatek MT1379????I should receive my new DVD today, I will check the chip type and try to call aspire to get some info from them. Here is the number 310-856-0630 ext 2. if more people call, It may be better

PostRegion code hack posted by badluck, March 02 2004:

Hi, Gako, how did you get your new DVD player? Did you simply just return the player ? How could you explain to buy.com about the disc stucked in the drawer ?

PostRegion code hack posted by timmy501, March 02 2004:

I successfully upgraded firmware a few days ago.
Today, I opened my aspire ad-1100.
Two mdeiatek chips inside, "MT1379EE", and "MT1336E". No ESS chips inside. Yes, although the "custom.htm" in the firmware states ESS chips. I am not sure firmware is the one to blame.

PostRegion code hack posted by Kirk Johnson, March 02 2004:

ESS and Mediatek do have some license agreement. It explains something about firmware.

PostRegion code hack posted by kli, March 03 2004:

I just purchased the AD-1100 from Buy.com. I'm not sure what version chip I have, but I'm going to assume for the time being that its the MediaTek chip. I tried out Hack #12 from http://www.cosmic450.com/mediatek/hacks.htm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hack 12 - this is the newest hack for Type 2 OSDs
Press the OPEN/CLOSE button once, so that the tray on your player ejects
Press the SETUP button once
Press the right arrow button (the one marked >) three times, so that the PREFERENCES menu icon is highlighted (it's the icon to the left of the padlock icon)
Key in 1, then 3, then 7, then 9, then 1, then 1, then 0, then 0 (i.e. 13791100)
Current REGION CODE will pop up on screen, possibly with additional information shown too
You can use the left and right arrow buttons to change the setting : 0 is for all-region, 1 to 6 each of the individual regions.
Press SETUP button again
The region code will now have been changed on your DVD player You may now press the OPEN/CLOSE button again, to close the tray
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It worked perfectly for me (albeit I did have to switch the TV Mode to NTSC to fix the b/w picture). Everything works great now.

PostRegion code hack posted by Alan Lin, March 03 2004:

Hi,

For those people who had purchased Aspire Digital AD-1100 from Buy.com during the past month or so AND did not apply the fatal firmware upgrade, here's a hack procedure that worked for me (as far as I can tell based on the information screen popped up after entering "1379" while in the setup menu; I have not tried to play a non-region DVD title yet).

First some information about my AD-1100:

Version 03.01.07.03
SUB-VER 00.00.00.01
8032 03.01.07.03
Servo 40.00.CE.A7
RISC 03.01.07.03
DSP 02.03.02.30
Region Code 1 (Factory setting)

Again, the above information can be obtained by pressing the setup button followed by entering "1379" (The chipset inside the player is the MediaTek MT1379 type 2 chipset).

The hack procedure is obtained from the website below:

http://www.cosmic450.com/mediatek/hacks.htm

Hack 12 - this is the newest hack for Type 2 OSDs

1. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button once, so that the tray on your player ejects

2. Press the SETUP button once

3. Press the right arrow button (the one marked >) three times, so that the PREFERENCES menu icon is highlighted (it's the icon to the left of the padlock icon)

4. Key in 1, then 3, then 7, then 9, then 1, then 1, then 0, then 0 (i.e. 13791100). Current REGION CODE will pop up on screen, possibly with additional information shown too.

5. You can use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to change the setting : 0 is for all-region, 1 to 6 each of the individual regions. (NOTE: The website says use left and right arror buttons, but they didn't work for me, but the UP and DOWN worked).

6. Press SETUP button again

7. The region code will now have been changed on your DVD player. You may now press the OPEN/CLOSE button again, to close the tray

8. Turn off the power then turn the power back up. Go to the setup menu and enter "1379" to verify that the region code is changed.

Hope the above procedure will work for everyone.

PostRegion code hack posted by former APEX user, March 03 2004:

The buttom line is:
All the people who bought from Buy.com deal recently, the firmware has been upgraded (newer than the posted update firmware).

So, you don't have to update the firmware anymore.
Just use the 1379 method.

All of these apply for firmware:
Version 03.01.07.03
SUB-VER 00.00.00.01
8032 03.01.07.03
Servo 40.00.CE.A7
RISC 03.01.07.03
DSP 02.03.02.30

My region code is 0 now after applying the 1379 method.
For those people who update the firmware, I guess the firmware got down-graded instead and mess up the system.

My guess is, these units from Buy.com are rework/refurbished units and they have update the firmware already before they shipped it.
My manual book and remote plastic look like had been opened before (they cut the plastic bag to open it). Also, my unit looks like has been used before (some sratches).
Anyway, it works great with all the Region 3 and Region 1 DVDs that I tried....So, no complain!

Enjoy!

PostRegion code hack posted by DuyKhoa, March 03 2004:

Thank you,
I did apply the 1379 menthod, and the region code is now 0, but when I check it on Preference, it still says region code is USA, sorry that I don't have any other DVD that from another region. I bought this one for my mother in Vietnam along with the Sony 725NP, because I like the Sony, but we can't hack it.
In addition to the hack above, we don't have to press 1100 after the 1379. So this is what I did:
Open the tray
Press SETUP
Press > three times
Press 1379
Use the upper or lower arrow to choose region
Hit SETUP again

And to check it:
Press SETUP
Press 1379
It will show you everything, firmware version, region code...

Thank you everyone who found this hack.

I received my new dvd today. the frimware is
03.01.07.03
00.00.00.01
03.01.07.03
40.00.ce.a7
03.01.07.03
02.03.02.30
region 1
I put the 1379 code in and I was able to change the region to 0 with the arrows. I tried a dvd region 2 and it worked ( after I changed the setuo to ntsc). I think I burned my 1st DVD with the cd firmware before even trying to put the 1379 code in......hopefully I was able to returned it to costco. I hope you guys will be able to do the same with buy.com.
After checking the files of firmware (see ptoreport hack)
It is possible to play divx/mpeg4 with a file that divxnetwork should have, are they gonna be ready to give it away I don't know but i'm gonna try, with that it will be the perfect dvd player....

Thanks a lot!!!

PostOther hack posted by Naushad, March 08 2004:

I had the same problem with the sound, but read the manual and after a little adjustments, the audio works fine. This DVD player has dolby digital decoder, hence audio needs to be setup to make it work. I have a regular two channel amp. hooked up to the two-channel audio out of the dvd player. Hit setup, press > to select the audio. Select
stereo from downmix. Press enter/play to make your selection permanent (yes, I agree! the remote sucks).
Again from the audio menu, select dialogue and turn it all the way up. I also adjusted the treble and the bass. If you have a dvd movie with two channels of audio track (original and one with director's commentary), press the audio button to set the audio to channel 1. Pressing Audio button toggles between all available audio channels. Hope this helps.

PostOther hack posted by ws, March 26 2004:

I had the audio problem too. I fixed it (yes, no kidding!). I forgot about what exactly I did. Basically, it was about the "setup". I went to the setup screen and chose "audio". I changed it to "stereo". And I might have done something else, but I'm not sure what exactly. Anyway, I guess the change to "stereo" worked.
