NEW VERSION 0.78.1444

ratDVD takes a full featured DVD movie and puts it into a highly compressed video format file - while preserving all the features of the original DVD. You can directly play back the compressed file - with all the options the original DVD. You can also simply convert it back to the original DVD format without losing any features(but you will lose video quality).

Why would anyone use this software? It doesn't work. I've tried it on two movies, one fairly new, the other quite old. And now I see nothing but green blocks in the preview. Maybe this was good in its day, but it is worthless now. Waste of time.

Review by Johnny on Jul 19, 2020 Version: 0.77.1509 OS: Windows 10 64-bit Ease of use: 9/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 2/10 Overall: 1/10

From what I understand this latest version still doesn't support Mpeg audio layer 2, so if you want to convert DVD's from a set top recorder that records audio in that format you're out of luck.

Also, still veeery slow. And forget about getting any replies on either RATDVD forum (CDFreaks or Doom9).

Review by leebo on Aug 25, 2005 Version: 0.75 OS: WinXP Ease of use: 8/10 Functionality: 4/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 6/10

Overall, this is a pretty good program for what it is...a rather early version of a program to compress dvd' has some stuff that has been simply lacking with other programs, such as tagging and full dvd archiving within a single file...on the downside though, the video codec that is used needs a bit more work before I personally would consider it to be a GREAT alternitive to some other programs around...compression time isnt THAT bad, at least in my opionion....try and compress a movie to divx at the highest settings and you will see what i mean. The only other drawback is playback.....the playback requirements are a bit steep for a lot of plays semi choppy on a 2ghz amd athlon 2400 xp with 768mb of ram and a 128mb video card....THAT needs improvement BIGTIME........but like i said earlier, its still in a rather early stage of development, so once they get the kinks worked out of it, im sure it will end up competing with the best of the best.

Review by whitejremiah on Jul 12, 2005 Version: v0.7.1239 OS: WinXP Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 9/10 Overall: 8/10

Tried it on vobs of total 7.x Gig to see how well it could compress it to fit all in a dvd-r. Took 6 hours to convert to rat file, and another 3 hour to convert rat file to vobs for authoring. The resulted DVD:
-appears to be much "washed out", lost a lot of details.
-macro blocks quite noticeable, pretty bad inter block noises.
-doesn't look like it has been converted to 1/2D from full D, but the perception to me with all those macroblock noises, over smoothing of neighbouring pixels (lost details) is worse than a 1/2D conversion done by for eg QuEnc, Rejig, or Tsunami.

I was looking for an alternative to DVD-rebuilder but so far have not found one that performs better than the QuEnc, or at least equal to Tsunami. Not recommended if all you want is to shrink a DVD.

Review by inuyasha on Jul 11, 2005 Version: 0.7.1235 OS: Win98 Ease of use: 9/10 Functionality: 5/10 Value for money: 9/10 Overall: 5/10

There is a big improvement in performance with the latest version.
The recovered DVD quality is v good at higher compressions even on high action scenes.
My trials were with quality slider at 60.RatDVD files were about 30 % of original and recovered DVD about 80% of original.
At 60 setting with earlier version-quality was not at all good.
