v5.5.0 BUGFIX RELEASE 1

- fixes selected region on slider and SmartCut breakages on various h264 based source media

v5.5.0

The most requested feature is finally added; media stream configuration! A
new media stream button has been added and enabled for use when
clips are all derived from the same source media OR media files added
manually all share the same codecs, formats, etc... A view of all
detected streams including video, audio, text/subtitles. Chapters are not
included as they are treated differently by FFmpeg and followng the usual
rule of thumb in VidCutter which is they will be included in your end
result if the original source is not corrupt or in some weird non-standard
configuration.

Migrated main toolbar buttons from QToolBar + QActions to new custom
widget VCToolBarButton handling QPushButton with attached. This allows
working pressed states on existing toolbar buttons which QToolBar buttons
(for reasons I cannot fathom) do not.

Tools section added to settings for setting paths to three main tools
used by VidCutter; FFmpeg, FFprobe and MediaInfo. Set to Defaults
button reverts changes to defaults, especially useful for users of
bundled packages of app (AppImage, Windows and macOS which contain
these tools prepacked). Allows you to use different versions of said
tools.

End of file is now being observed in the mpv library event pool so that
playback state resets position back to the start, in pause and all
controls in their default states.

Ability to set clip index list to the left or right (default) of main
window.

Support for WTV (.wtv - Windows Recorded TV Show) media files
(playback and cutting/joining) added.

New code for restarting app whe changing themes is causing problems in Windows,
starting app again resolves things. My patience for Windows shell is at an all
time low so will fix this when my care factor returns (if ever). Windows shell
is a joke.

Required dependency of PyOpenGL python module introduced for users on slightly
older Ubuntu, Fedora and Ubuntu based Linux distributions. such as Mint or
ElementaryOS. This now fixes things if you were experiencing immediate
segmentation faults when launching. no OpenGL context could be created. Again,
this only applies to Linux and only to those distro mentioned above. No user
manual tasks needed, Ubuntu and Fedora packaging scripts already updated so
it should all be seamless to the end user.

ffprobe code fixed for media that is either problematic or imperfect. stdout
and stderr streams separated for ffprobe calls, thus fixing ffprobe JSON parsing
errors and allowing the addition of the new .WTV media file format.

Minor changes/improvements to a few other front panel buttons w/ pressed states
where previously unavailable + minor cosmetic improvements to color schemes
of hover/active state buttons

Linux desktop and appdata metadata files switched to reverse domain
notation file names as per freedesktop.org specs

Fullscreen mode rewrite for Qt 5.10 changes + better support in wayland.

OpenGL helpers added to X11 and Wayland based Linux platforms to better
assist with fullscreen functionality and video render compatibility any
where an OpenGL context can be created.

Updated keyboard shortcuts information to include some added keyboard
and mouse based shortcuts.

Defined cutting regions shown on the timeline are now hidden during
the "generating thumbnails" process (mainly evident when turning
thumbnails on/off or resizing the application's window)

Better detection and prompting if application exit is attempted while
video processing jobs in progress, if user decides to continue quitting
then kill all VidCutter associated jobs gracefully and force the usual
cleanup routines

I watched how the program worked and was horrified. I'm shocked! (and this is said softly). For example - took a video on the game - the file was 38 Gigabytes in size. All work is done on a computer with 64 Gigabytes of RAM, an I7-6700 processor, an SSD drive. Downloading a file to the program is almost instantaneous. I cut 14 segments from 30 seconds to 1 minute and ran to save the result. And WHAT I SEE - the processor is loaded by 100 percent with 14 copies of ffmpeg (by the number of segments) - ASK WHY IT IS PARALLEL, if the CONSECUTIVE will be kept faster.
The program worked more than 4 hours (it was interesting ...)
For comparison, SolveigMM Splitter downloaded the same file with a miscalculation, I saw the cache for 3 minutes, cut it into pieces for another 4 minutes.
7 minutes against 4 hours is nonsense, or I do not understand something and I'm doing it wrong.
I apologize for my bad english

@AlanC thanks for the tip re the cursor.. a minor bug regression.. has been fixed for the next release which should be ready in a week or two at most with some additional features; blackframe detection for auto com-skip mainly..

@michfr wanted to mention that the latest 5.5.0 release should work with your WTV files although I had a limited supply of WTV files for testing but the main issue that prevented their use was resolved. would be great if you could advise if all is good on your side now.. thx!

The bugfix release fixes the serious problem I reported in #33 thanks.

If you're picky, you might want to kill the 'busy' cursor, which appears when the information box is dismissed (after a run) and persists until you hover over a button or a thumbnail in the CLIP INDEX. Clicking to start and stop the video in the main window doesn't deal with it.

But it's not a show stopper, just misleading for the inexperienced.

Feb 7, 2018 Version: 5.5 bugfix OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

Version 5.5 hangs with 80% on the progress bar overlay.
When I inspect the target folder, the clip is there in full (as 'middle'), as are the 'start' and 'end' frame segments.
In all cases the media were Matroska containers with AVC and AC-3 content, high bitrates.
I can confirm that Version 5.0 (post script error) does not behave like this, and runs to completion.

One other factor - same result with Tools pointing to default ffmpeg/MediaInfo and to my local 64 bit copies (which I keep up to date).

(Forced to rate for this report, I am maintaining my 5.0 rating because I trust the author to address this).

I, too, am happy to report that the fixed v5 works fine.

I had never used the program, but I had a mini-project to do and decided to try it.

Making the cuts and saving the final version were straightforward; saving the 40-minute film (150mb) took about 5 minutes on my Lenovo S20 workstation (specs in signature).

Thanks to the author.

Update to my previous comment:
The fix for the version 5.0.0 has resolved the frame accurate trimming issue. Thx to the author for this great piece of free software!

Nov 18, 2017 Version: 5.0.0 64 bit OS: Windows 10 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

@nuful, here is no problem with the 64 bit version under win10-64bit. It starts and works perfectly. The only complain is that the frame accurate trimming is not work (yet) as promised at the beggining of the clip, but the sound cut is ok (frozen image with live sound until the next keyframe). Im sure than the author will repair this issue. It deserves thanks for his work!

Hi guys,

We've just updated the Windows x64 bit version which should now work from Win7 to Win10. Apologies for the issues encountered. This new build has been tested on Win 7 x64 as well as WinPE. The 32-bit version has not been fixed yet.

Same "script error" here, run 64bit version on Win64
Also tried the 32 bit version and although it runs first display a message saying that it could nor find ffmpeg
None of the v4.0 version of vidcutter had these issues, I'm back to the previous version for the moment.

Nov 15, 2017 Version: 5.0.0 OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 8/10 Functionality: 8/10 Value for money: 8/10 Overall: 8/10

Apparently installed on Win7x64, but program wouldn't open. Received an error window that mentioned "script error", but that was it.

I'm running Norton Internet Security and Malware Bytes. Perhaps one of them blocked something; the error message didn't mention the source or have offer the possibility to obtain more info.

Hey there guys,

Just letting you know that v4.5.0 is currently in the works and its main feature will be smart cutting, which translates to frame-accurate cutting. This is the technique by which a small portion at the beginning and end of your clip is reencoded and the majority in the middle is direct-copied as it already does. The result is frame accurate cuts just as you set them in the user interface and encoding only applies to small 2 or so second long clips so while it may be a little slower by a few seconds the trade off is guaranteed what you see is what you get functionality.

For the tech savvy, we're referring to GOP cuts on IDR keyframes and similar smart cut techniques as used by the more expensive commercial apps. Very few, if any tools, exist out there that are open-source and free that offer this feature as far as we were able to find anyways.

Should be ready for release by end of August.

Cya!

Good program. It cuts perfectly with the videos I tried, and you can do multiple cuts in the same video. The only issue I had is that it freezes when clicking 'Open' or 'Play' or 'Restart' after saving the cut video. You have to close the program via the Task Manager.

A join feature, while not necessary, would be a great addition.
