Excellent Awesomeness! I only have one compliant - When are you going to support VVC / h266? The official specs have been out since February, and stuff has been using it. But LAV does not support it yet.

Thanks!

I use the LAV-Filters many years on nvidia hardware (GT 960, GTX 1060 ti) and it is a nice and compact filter pack for playback of different video and audio codecs. I am very happy with it. I do not understand, why other people have problems in combination with video editing programs. I use different video programs to encode videos with CPU and CUDA features and NO program has a problem with it! Maybe other users with problems use the wrong settings or the video software is very unstable. I use Adobe Premiere, Nero Video, Handbrake, Xmedia Recode, StaxRip, ... with Nvidia CUDA and all programs work fine.

If you use MPC Player BE or HC you do not need the LAV-Filters, because the video player already contain the lav filters.

Used to work perfect with my NVIDIA card. Now I changed to AMD Radeon RX6600 and there is judder with some h264 coded movies and Servus TV HD and my DVB-Viewer with DXVA2 activated.

Review by Robert on May 22, 2022 Version: LAV-Filters 0.76.1 / 0.76.1-3 Nightly OS: Windows 11 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 7/10

Entirely based on the usage of CUDA in video editor and authoring software.

Not easy to use, there is too much choises of settings in there, which can be too confusing for a lot of people, where they might end up doing some wrong choices of settings, which can mess things up.
Hence i can't give it a higher rating than i did.

My experience is that LAV-Filters kills the CUDA support in both TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 7 and Authoring Works 5 & 6.
I had to uninstall LAV-Filters, do a pretty hard cleaning of left overs and return back to ffdshow tryouts and Haali Media Splitter to get the CUDA support back.
Hence the low rating i gave it on its functionality, because its also a CUDA killer.

LAV-Filters works well on other points if you just wanna use it for getting support for playing various video formats.
But you have to stay away from it if you use CUDA supporting video editors and DVD/Blu-ray authoring software.

November 2019 - LAV Filters are an open-source Direct Show audio-video filter wrapper, written by a very good german developer, of the FFMPEG libraries, focused on high quality direct playback. The trio (Splitter, Video Decoder and Audio Decoder) is reliable, stable, with really few bugs. Respect to the MPC-BE or Pot Player integrated filters, the LAV combo sometimes exhibit some issue when dealing with streaming video. But the developer explained that its filters are not really focused on the compatibility for online videos. Infact, for playing high quality video and audio files from disk, LAV Filters remain the most reliable combo, correct, a de facto standard for HTPC users on Windows enviroment. As usual, MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR (or EVR on Intel - Intel context adaptive scaling) remain the best tool to watch videos with Win 8 or Win 10.

This review is for new users. October 2019. LAV Filters is the only combo for splitter, audio and video decoding that I can advice. It's stable, reliable, focused on quality, on active development (by a great developer). The trio MPC-HC + LAV + madVR (video renderer) is the Gold Standard for the HTPC users on Windows platform.

Hi,

When set to D3D11 for video decoder, it give me the message "3D11 requires Windows 8 or newer, and is not supported on this OS". I'm running Windows 10 64Bit Pro, with an Nividia GeForce 1060 6gig card, AMD FX 8021 8-core, 16gigs RAM. It should work! Any fix for this? Or is CUVID or DXVA2 (copy-back or native?) better for my set up. I'm using MadVr, XySubFilter, with MPC-BE (with FFDSHOW Tryouts for audio - no offense meant it just works better on my Yamaha 7.1 system than LAV Audio). I'm concerned with quality over performance. Using it for all media forms. LAV Spliter is THE spliter to use.

Thanks,

Rodney

Same here, I'll stick with the 0.71 so far.

Best codec i have used for years with MPC-HC until 0.72, there is a huge delay playback from rewinding a MP4 video files, and it doesn't occur in 0.71. Rewind while the video is playing with no notable delay is very important for my daily use is why i can only rate 0.72 'Ease of use' 4 stars. Since the issue i had revert back to 0.71 for the ease of use.

Being the curious techie I am, I tried the nightly build and for some reason, my videos have slow seek issues. Once I went back to the stable build, I can seek through my video files with ease. Not sure what has changed, but I'll continue to look into this, and stick with the stable version for now.

A great Windows DirectX filter supporting virtually every audio video and container format I use it with mpc-be but it works with all modern players
The only issue I have is that hevc hardware acceleration doesn't work with intel quicksync it does work with dxva2 and d3d11 😶

Well, that's a surprise!
.ax is a DirectShow filter.
The documentation doesn't mention anything about making a direct call to them with "OpenConfiguration" as a passed argument.
That's pretty clever, like a batch file that calls itself as a reg file.
I've never run the installer, just extracted the component files. Didn't think to look at install_script.iss.

Of course there is GUI - just go to LAV filters configuration folder and run it, side to this whenever filter is active it can display icon on Taskbar - just activate it (Enable System Tray Icon).

@matijah

nvcuvid.dll (NVIDIA CUVID in LAV Video Decoder) crashes on my systems playing many newly encoded hevc files. Only option i had was to turn to dxva (copy back) in LAV Video decoder.

And I thought that was only me who had the problem playing HEVC files encoded from VC-1 source so I had to uncheck the HEVC box from NVIDIA CUVID in LAV Video Decoder!

Hi. In case somebody would (still) want to equip: an old — 32-bit — Win. XP SP2 PC (like I needed to do), I HAD TO test, rather tediously... several old versions, since:

from v° 0.60 on, "LAVVideo.ax" refuses to register, while the other components register alright (up to 0.67 anyway, = today).

So: 32-bits XP machine: up to v° 0.59.1 only, for the VIDEO component — and in my case...

.

It's because LAVFilters.Dependencies.manifest wass missing from the original zip for the 32-bit version.

@ Post by prijatelj.v: The crashes / issues you describe are the result of interferences/crack ups in the graph creation process. Before installing Lav, make sure Haali is deinstalled properly, also deactivate the internal filters of your softwareplayer for the formats you want to split/decode with LAV. In the LAV options theres an "Input formats" tab, you can select Raw LPCM-audio as well. To avoid a messed up graph building, set everything to LAV, do not use any further postprocessing filters.
You can provide yourself much better/faster performance than with tha Haali setup (its 6 years old, no bugfixes/updates), LAV is constantly improved by its developer Nevcairiel (THX btw :). For guides /troubleshooting I strongly recommend checking out the Doom9 Forum, the Lav- and other software developers post there and are very kind providing profound help and tipps :)

Actually its faster than Haali for quite a while already. At least from what i recognized when i compared, few versions ago. Besides its better performance it delivers much more stream infos.

This is a major release in my opinion. Although the changelog contains few update information, it actually has numerous small updates included within since the last stable version. This version seems faster than the previous ones. LAV getting better with time. We may have to ditch Haali Media Splitter in coming days. LAV splitter is going to take over ;)
Thanks devs for this package!

Please ignore my previous comment, that problem happened because I usually overwrite the old versions of the DirectShow filters, instead of registering the new ones.

On Windows XP, Media Player Classic Homecinema may be unable to use LAV Filters for playing DVDs. Here is the workaround that I've found:

open MPC-HC (or MPC-BE), goto "Options", "External Filters", and then add "LAV Video Decoder", add Media Type "MEDIATYPE_DVD_ENCRYPTED_PACK", add Sub Type "MEDIASUBTYPE_MPEG2_VIDEO".

LAV Audio goes out of sync when connected to other ASF splitters, such as the GDCL WMV/WMA Parser. Besides, the MPEG-4 ALS decoder again has the problem that was fixed in revision 0.50.5-xxxxxx (it consumes 100% of the CPU-time on a Pentium-4, and freezes MPC-HC if the internal Audio Switcher is enabled).

Works great with very smooth video on my old pentium pro PC with Nvidia card. I have had problems with the LAV Audio decoder on 6 channel AC-3 audio. Audio volume changes seem exaggerated when audio goes from soft to load. This problem is rare and is not noticeable on most audio tracks so it's not a big problem but I have found that Divx decoder does not have the same problem.
