This program may no longer be updated but it still works just fine! I've been using it to rip from DVDs. I have noticed though that newer DVDs (made in the last 2-3 years) when ripped using this software, no longer produce vob files that have a correct time stamp.

Some of the best things in life are free!!! This baby is alive and well on my desktop, and used year after year.

Just love it. I also use DVD Fab Decrypter, and DVD Shrink, and consider these two as well some of the very best DVD creation software every offered up for free or for sale.

These are a few others will always be handy in my tool box.

DVD Decrypter is a genius tool!
It's a Masterpiece!
Even today (2009), there is no software like this one, who has such usefull tools inside.

Sombody who is a Programmer, should go on with the source code from DVD Decrypter.

Has worked perfectly on everything I've thrown at it using the file mode. Don't know what the other modes are for as I've never found anything to accept them, but it defaults to file mode so they don't get in the way.

it is a really sad occasion when something as good as this comes arround and is stomped on with such relish. Shame on whoever saw fit to end such a good programme, I like many others have paid out many hard earned pounds in the past for programmes to copy dvd's be it for backup copies or whatever and almost without exception every single one I have tried has failed misserably to live up to its description on the package.
This freeware software is exceptional it does exactly what you describe it does it rips the contents of the DVD to the hard drive. So sorry to see you go, good luck in whatever venture you decide to undertake in the future

Even with the stop in future development and ripping features aside, this program is still one of the most useful ISO read/write programs I have ever used. Ability to read MD5 files is gravy, I will continue to use the program for a long time simply for the ISO burning and creation options. Kudos to LightningUK for a simply unbelievable piece of software.

I would be more than happy to carry the torch. The software is a diamond in a sea of coal. However, I'm sure the program is written in something like C++ or C# which counts me out from directly supporting the software. BUT, having managed IT types for 25 years on a large scale, I might be able to drum up the necessary human resources. Lightning UK, would you be interested?

It is ashame the author has weak knees. In the interest of freedom, the author should pass the code onto someone who would carry the torch. Any takers?

I know this may be late, but I wish to offer my respects to Lightning UK for his efforts in making possible the backing up of many of my DVD's. I understand he has been dealt a blow that he cannot resist, so I say "Rest In Peace Lightning UK" for you have done your part and I also know that one day another talented individual will take on your burden and continue forth what you have been prevented from doing. These moronic software/dvd/cd makers fail to grasp is that you cannot by force of arms and the use of lawyers and governments hinder the human heart and it's endeavors. I guess I made an ass of myself enough for one day as I rarely have this much to say.

The best of its kind, but looks like it will no longer be updated due to some 'Movie Studio' getting there hands on it.

A great piece of software 10/10 all round, just a shame it has to go !

Lets hope it gets resurrected in some other form ?

Probably the most frequently used tool for DVD backup ever. If you aren't using it, download it now and see what you are missing.

A newbie experience: Great software. Not sure if either DVDShrink 3.1 or DVDDecrypter 3.1.9.0 had a virus or something, though... I installed these two together (and nothing else since), and then when I tried to browse to www.google.com.au the next day it gave me a pretty "404" page saying something like I probably have a Qhosts virus as other customers had complained and this was usually the cause for some DNS interception type reason. PCCILLIN doesn't pick up any virus though, but when I restore from a recent disk backup with old DVDSHRINK/DVDDecrypter versions, it works fine. Confusing... may have picked up something from another place, but don't think so as I disable all scripting in the browser and also say no to activeX controls :) Sort of point's the finger, doesn't it. I'll pose the question in the forums.

I use DVDDecrypter and SmartRipper 2.41 ... mostly SmartRipper 2.41. My comment is directed to gatortail80. I ripped The Core and moved on to another DVD. I didn't have any errors. And most likely used DVDShrink 3 Beta 5.

So gatortail80 ... very possible ... something else was having an influence ... for so many errors.

Whoa, this is some program! 27 minutes to rip a 3.8gb dvd to hard drive - that's impressive anyway, but to do it on an Athlon 1Ghz with 512mb pc133 ram in that time is not that short of miraculous. Couldn't be simpler to use, and the results left me gasping. Recommended.

Execellent program except I found it to not rip a movie with speed...The CORE has been ripping for an hour and half and is still at 50% complete showing over 1400 read errors. Most of my movies rip around 15 mins or so. This movie has been encoded with bad blocks like microsoft does there games. Anyone have any solutions to this.

I dunno what kind of speedy systems these guys have, but I have Athlon XP 2200, 512 Ram it takes alot more than half hour to rip. That said, WOW!! Great tool...I take a laptop everywhere and with a 80 GB Hard drive, I can take a dozen movies with me on trips without the DVDs. Bravo. Simple and runs itself, overall, a savior to people who worry about losing or scratching DVDs

I HATE THIS PROGRAM !!! I HATE THIS PROGRAM !!! It is because it is only now that I have discovered this fantastic software. It has been a long time since I was looking for perfect solution to my needs.

I have used a borrowed Panasonic DVD Writer(standalone) to record my precious 100+ hours of home videos (2hours per 4.7GB DVD disc). I don't have to re-record them again for my backup since I have to go again the process of playing it time for time while recording. I don't want to author it yet. Oh My! I JUST WANT TO BACK-UP MY HOME DVD'S. I WANT TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL DVD RECORDED FROM Hi8S AND USE THE BACKUP TO BE VIEWED.

I have tested a lot of software, and it does not work for me. Until DVD Decrypter...THIS SOFTWARE IS HEAVENSENT!!! - PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I am now evaluating it further for other use like backing-up DVD movies...

PRAISE GOD!!! THANKS TO GOD FOR GIVING THE AUTHOR OF THIS PROGRAM SUCH A GENIUS MIND TO CREATE SUCH A WONDER.

Thanks,
DVD DeeDee

Nice! Easy! Fast!
With that much DVD ripping software around...you may wanna stick with this one and stop going nuts trying to see wich one to download.
in less than 10 easy steps, you will be ripping your DVD to your HD. For a 6,6 Gb DVD, it only took 14 minutes (P. 4 1.7, 1.5Gig ram).

This is the one program that you need if you want to make copies of copies that you made with the DVD X Copy series of programs. This baby will re-copy it for you, and it's very easy to use. The only thing bad about this program that would make it perfect, would be if it allowed you to combine 2 discs into 1 disc.
