There is a new firmware v2.30 (11/26/03) for the D0201 & D0203 writers:
http://www.optorite.com/firmware.htm

Anyone knows what it fixed?

I updated my firmware from 2.30 to 2.50 for my DD0201. Works even better with 2.50. :D Upgrade went smoothly.

Note: The 2.50E firmware is ONLY for the DD0201. Again it's ONLY for the DD0201 and NOT the DD0203. You can try using 2.50E on DD0203, but that's your own decision.

I bought this drive as a rebadged pacific digital and had this drive for about three weeks now (got it for $90 after rebate from staples). I immediatelty updated the firmware to 2.30 before I attempted my first burn.

I've burned 10 DVD backup movies and two DVD data discs thusfar. Burning either type of DVD has gone flawlessly as I have created zero coasters. Using Arita DVD+R media (media code RICOHJPNR01) I have had no problems with playback on my Apex AD-703 standalone dvd player. I also burned some DVD video backups onto some Tevion DVD+R discs (media code OPTODISCOR4). One of these has problems with freezing/skipping with data written to the outer half of the disc.

Overall, I'm very satisfied and would recommend this drive to anyone.

Got this for Chrimbo and couldn't get it to burn a DVD at all, though CD buring worked fine. Tried different brands but every time it froze the PC ( W2K ). Contacted Optorite who got back pretty quick with some help and now it works a treat.

To get it working I had to uninstall both my CD drives from device manager, uninstall the drivers for the seondary IDE channel and reboot. W2K did the rest and now it's fine.

I work for compusa and cost price on this is pretty cheap. I bought one and was reading about it and I went through some (opening boxes) and saw that all the hival dvd writers we had were either optorite dd0201 or dd0203, never saw a btc brand someone here mentioned. Anyways, I dunno whats up with some peoples drives with bad ratings, but this drive burns anything i put in (so far) from cheap compusa brand cdrs and dvdrs to more popular named brand ones and have not yet produced a single coaster. Once i installed the drive I updated firmware to 2.30 so I dont know if the previous firmware would have given me problems. I use either nero6 or dvd x copy platinum to burn. But overall this drives kickass for the price i got it for. By the way this drive is on sale this week $99.99 after $10 instant and $20 mail in rebate. :)

Update to my post a few days ago.

Having successfully burned a regular maxell cdr, the supplied That's DVD+R, and a Verbatim DVD-RW, I went to my local computer warehouse type store, and bought the cheapest DVD-R discs I could get. A spindle of 25 2x discs, which are brandless, identified as MXL RG01, though I read that there are counterfeit discs floating around with such an identifier.

Anyway, suffice to say, these will NOT burn at all, failing power calibrations every time (i must've tried 10 of them, randomly chosen from the spindle). My collegue, who bought the same discs at the same time as me has no problems burning these on his Pioneer drive.

I upgraded the Optorite's firmware from it's 2.11 to the latest 2.30, but no dice.

Just bought a 5 pack of Fuji DVD+Rs from Business Depot, noting AFTER purchase that they are not officially supported by Optorite, so I was cautious when I tried one. But I tried one, and it burnt fine (at 2.4x obviously), and plays back fine in my JVC DVD player.

Go figure.

So the rating drops to a 7, because I don't have a problem with the drive, it's just going to be one of those things. Buy decent media.

Have recently been given the DD0201 as a present after installation can only get audio from playing a DVD - no video. Have tried data disc and that is no problem so I assume the drive is OK. I don't want to try burning anything until I cam be sure that the video works. Any ideas? you can contact me direct on mike5141@btopenworld.com

I've had the DD0203 drive about two months now. I upgraded to V2.3 firmware before I inserted the first disk into this drive. The EEPROM flashed perfectly. I tried burning some TDK DVD+R (4x) disks using the Sonic "MyDVD" Ver 4 authoring software that was bundled with the drive. The software would go through the whole process of creating menus, transcoding audio, planning files, etc. When the burning process would start, the software would Cancel the burn after a few seconds. After about 8 coasters, I gave up and convinced myself the Burner itself was bad. However, I tried another software program (Pinnacle Studio 8) just to attempt to burn a short 10 min test video to a DVD+R and it worked! After I upgraded (bought) the Sonic's "MyDVD Deluxe" (Ver 5.0), I burned several DVD+R's successfully. Since then, I have burned over 100+ TDK 4x DVD+R's and about 25 Maxell DVD+R's. ALL of the TDK DVD+R's worked perfectly. 2 of the 25 Maxell disc's failed to complete the burn process successfully. Not sure if it was the media or just a glitch. The OptoRite HomePage recommends TDK media, so that's what I bought in bulk; seems to work great.

A couple of comments: The single best piece of advice I wish someone had given me when I started; USE DVD+/-RW's until you get the hang of your software and the authoring process if you are new to this (as I was). It will save you a bunch of $$$$. Also, the 2.3 firmware is absolutely neccessary if you are going to use 4x media in this drive. Lastly, if you're having trouble, try different authoring software & media brands. Burn a short video project at first, rather than investing a ton of time in your masterpiece video project. For $100, this drive rocks! (Haven't tried DVD-R's, but others seem to have had good luck with them as well).

Just an update to my situation. I had previously had nothing but problems with this burner, but looks like I finally found some media that works with it for me. (Memorex DVD - Rs). I'm 2 for 2, so far =P Which is a lot better than before with other media. Before, I was lucky to have one successful burn out of a dozen tries.
Firmware - 2.30.

Comments posted by Stooch from Other, January 12, 2004. Rated this writer 5 of 10.

I've been reading the posts here for the Optrite DD0203 and have flashed to firmware 2.30, but the results have been less than stellar. I started with Sony -R dvd's, but they only worked if the data was less than 3.5 GB (I received a "Power Calibration Error" for anything larger than that, but the disks never were burned so no coasters). I then switched to Fujifilm -R's and have burned one back-up movie; the dvd burned fine (or so it said), but the movie was very jerky when played back. I am going to try this drive for the next few weeks, but if no improvement, I'll return. I'm using CloneDVD and the packaged burning software, not Nero 6. As the final kicker, I'm running everything on a PIII 733 machine with 400MB memory, so this may be my real issue.

Bought this last week for $150 Canadian.

Burnt a regular audio CD using Maxell CD-R at 24x on first attempt.

Burnt 1.3GB to a regular CD using Maxell CD-R at 24x on first attempt.

Burnt 4.7GB to the supplied That's DVD+R at 4x on first attempt.

Didn't install the supplied software, preferring to use the latest version of Nero.

No problems at all. Giving 9/10 (nothing can be perfect!)

I am completely Satisfied with this Burner, I been burning since the dawn of CD Burners. Generic Media, Expensive Media, No Problems, I always use -Rs because they are the cheapest. Cheap Drive + Cheap Media = Damn Good DVDs. No Need to buy a sony for $100 more for something that is more pickier about cheap media and only has a 2mb buffer. If you are new to Dvd Burning, you may have Issues, its not the drive, it could be your OS, the age of your Motherboard, Always Flash the Firmware of all your hardware, MAKE DAMN SURE you know exactly your model no., Otherwise you will make a very expensive Paper weight. I strongly recommend this drive, only if you are experienced and your Computer is less than a 2 years old.

My OptoRite DD0201 is rebadged as Pacific Digital. I bought it from Staples at $60 during Thanskgiving promotion. The quality and performance of this burner is out of my expectation! I updated the firmware to 2.30 under DOS (failed to update under WinXP) right after I installed it. I used Nero 6 to burn data DVD and CloneDVD to back up movie DVD. All the discs I burned can be read by different DVD players and DVD-ROMs that I can find to test. The media that I used include KHypermedia 2x DVD-R, KHypermedia 2.4x DVD+R, Arita 4x DVD+R, Generic 4x DVD+R and Verbatim DataLife 2.4x DVD+RW. The 8MB buffer is great to burn DVD smoothly. I am very satisfied with this burner till now!

I just got the Optorite 0201 for Xmas and bought a box of Maxell DVD+R & Maxell DVD-R. I backed up discs using both types and they work perfectly on 4 different stand alone players.
After installing I immediately upgraded to Firmware 2.30 so
I don't know of any previous problems. The drive is working great and for £89 it feels like a steal.

Two Words: Totally Awesome. I use Fireware Version 2.17 and wont update it due the problems I have read about the firmware update for this drive. If it aint broke don't fix it I always say. I bought this drive at Staples it was labeled (Hi-Val) for $99 as a close out special. Replaced my old Philips CDRW (8x4x32) [This drive was awesome 3 years ago when I bought it]. I had zero installation problems and I am running Win XP Pro SP1. I have made 9 successful "DVD Backups" using this burner in conjunction with DVD Shrink 2.3 and Nero 6.0. Plays all of my DVD+Rs very well in my Toshiba SD-1800 DVD Player.

I have had nothing but problems with my Optorite 0203. I've tried a few different firmware versions. Right now, I'm running v2.30. Having heard all the rave reviews about this new firmware update, I was pretty excited that my drive may finally work. No such luck.

I've tried burning several different DVDs (I've had people walk me through this step by step, so I'm quite confident I'm doing it correctly). The burn completes, and everything seems fine. Then I put it in any of my players, and all the drives do are hummmmmmm away reading the disk, never loading anything up. Even the Optorite itself will do that with the disks.

I think I've had one or 2 dvds (one of them was burned onto the DVD that came with the drive.. wish I could buy more)that managed to burn fine. The rest have been coasters (probably about 12-15 coasters). Now, I've only tried 2 different types of DVDs. Both are +Rs (some generic ones, which yes, I can see being bad... and the others were Memorex DVD+R 4x). I'm hoping that if I go out and buy some -Rs, I'll have better results.

This has been a frustrating and expensive learning experience for me. If I could go back in time, I definitely never would have bought this drive, given the problems I've had. I would've saved a little more cash and gone with something more reliable. Theres been several times where I've considered just giving this away to a friend and buying a new drive.

On a final note, I recommend this drive to absolutely no one. Even if I do get it working with the -Rs I try next. Just because from my experience and those of others here, this drive seems way too finicky with media.

Compared to my LG 52X CD burner, this thing is so picky for media. Not just DVD's, but CD's as well. And yes, I have flashed it to 2.30.

For DVD writing, I had a bunch of problems using InstantCopy. I was using version 7 but it didn't have the driver for this burner. Found out that this burner is an OEM version of the Sanyo CRD-BPVD2. Using this driver, I was able to burn several movie backups successfully. Then I upgraded to InstantCopy 8. It included the real driver for the DD0201. I couldn't burn anything after that. Kept getting Loss of Streaming errors midway through the burn. Found out from a friend that ver.8 was flaky for him as well with his LG DVD burner and reverted to 7. I did as well but was still getting the errors. For some reason, ver.8 left the DD0201 drivers there as it was still selected. Changed the drivers back to the Sanyo and have been burning successfully since. My backups are playable on my Norcent DVD player and my laptop's DVD-ROM (LG CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive)using Princo 4X DVD-R.

I have had mixed results with DVD+R and +RW. Using Memorex DVD+R 4X (Ricoh), I was able to successfully burn copies but were not recognized by my Norcent nor my laptop's DVD-ROM. Same for data DVD's. I am able to burn a movie to a Sony (Ricoh) DVD+RW 2.4X and is playable on my Norcent but not my laptop. Seems my laptop only likes the - media. I have not had the chance to try other medias in this burner. If I get anymore problems, I will report them here.

CD burning is quite iffy. It does not like Princo CD-R 42X at all, giving a focus or tracking error during the burn. This can be anywhere from halfway to near the end of the burn using Nero. Bought some cheapo Pine (Prostech) CD-R 48X and it works with those. The HD-BURN is totally crap! I have tried 5 or 6 different CD-R's and I can't get it to work at all. Keep getting a power calibration error from the start. Tried Princo, Verbatim, an unknown brand, Pine and Memorex, no-go. I think that because this drive is targeted for the economy buyer, the cheaper the media, the better. I paid $150 CDN (~$116 US) with free shipping from TigerDirect.ca.

I regret having bought this drive, seeing that I could have gotten an LG for $20 more. I chose it for the 8MB buffer, dual -/+ media compatibility and the HD-BURN and am disapointed :(

Just got this unit.
Used it for an hour without upgrading the firmware and it worked awful. Everything was going wrong.

Tried to upgrade the firmware to 2.30 in Windows and crashed the computer 4 times. Evidently some program was locking the drive.

Upgraded the firmware in DOS (used the 'copy diskette to the RAM Drive' trick to avoid risk. Worked perfect.

Now the drive works flawlessly. Using Ritek DVD-R @ 4X as well as Ritek CDR and can use HD-Burn perfectly with those CDRs.

One recommendation if you're having trouble is to play around with different master/slave combinations.

I love this cheap burner. I have thrown every cheap DVD that I could find at it and no problems yet. I even got some CompUsa brand 2.4 DVD+r blanks and they worked great. I have the DD0201, that I flashed with the 2.3 software before I did anything with the burner. A much more expensive burner could not do any better than this little guy.
