awesome writer, nice smooth burn everytime with verbatim cd+dvd media.

plays in everything i've put it in, even my old dvd player.
well worth the money

This drive was a bit of a nightmare as far as dvd-R compatability was concerned, the drive was supplied as a dvd+/- R/RW by pcinfinity.net. This is a liberal interpretation. Tree firmware flashes later it finally says that it will write dvd-r. As far as dvd-r is concerned be prepared to use the priceiest media only. It will write fine on DVD+R riteks and this is what I will be using from now on. I was spoilt by my old TEAC which would probably try and write to a beer mat!!

Final successfully converted my Nu Tech 081 to Nu Tech 082.
It took me three days and a 10-pack of burn dvd-r coasters. Here is what I did. First update firmware to Nu DDW-082-B364, official for Nu tech 0082, restart computer, update firmware next to Nu DDW-082-B370 official, restart computer, and finaly update firmware to Nu DDW-082-B375 official. Essential sotfware I believes are needed that I am using are Windows XP Professional w/ Service Pack 1, Windows Media Player 9, DirectX 9, Adaptec aspi_471a2.exe, and Nero Burning Rom Ultra v6.3.1.15. To verify your 081 is now DVDRM DDW-082, go to Nero Info Tool in Nero Toolkit, there should be checks for one, all supported read features except DVD-RAM, DVD+R DL (dual layer D9 disc), and C2Errors and, for two, checks for all supported write features, including Mount Rainier, except DVD-RAM and DVD+R DL. NOTE: One can book type DVD+R disc to DVD-R disc(DVD-ROM) during burning with Nu BitSetting Utility 1.12. Open utility, Set DVD+R to DVD-ROM, close program. Before hitting burn tab on Nero 6.3.1.15, double-check to see if the box for "Book Type DVD-ROM" is checked. These converted DVD+R to DVD-R discs can now play on a Playstation consule. I rated this drive a 9 because first: as the drive as a dvd+ burner as great, a 10 rating, because it burns very fast 4X dvd+r media at either 6X or 8X; second: as a dual format dvd-r/+r burner, it got an 8 rating, because I had too problems updating the drive to work with name-brand dvd-r media, with el cheapo dvd-r media there are still some problems.
Good Luck All.

What a great deal...i got this for $169CDN and this is an 8x DVD+/-RW drive. The first drive i bought was an Optorite and it would burn a disc to save my life. i took it back and switched it for this Drive...First disc burned and played in my Standalone Player without any problem. However DVD-R will play on my Old RCA dvd player but not on my RCA R230N...oh well the dvd+r play on everything...even my PS2...CHEAP DRIVE, GREAT VALUE

So far I've only used the included 4x DVD+RW disc and 4x DVD+R disc and a couple of CD-Rs. My firmware is version B361 (Jan 27, 2004). It burned the DVD+R at 8x, no problem. Nero's write verfiication test with the RW disc gave an error but I've written to it a couple of times with no apparent problems. CDs burn well at up to 40x (about 36x average).

Only major problem is that eComStation (OS/2) won't boot with this drive connected unless I use the most generic IDE driver. Otherwise it seems to work well in both eComStation and Win2K.

Just got this burner and installed it as master on an IDE chain. Tried it with Memorex DVD+R (CMC 4x) and Memorex DVD+RW (4x). Used DVDShrink and Nero 5.5 to burn a couple of DVD-Video archives as DVD-ROM using the NU default-book-type setting utility provided by NU. Also have flashed the rev. 30 firmware from their site. The Memorex DVD+R burned at a very quick 8x with a near-full DVD being done in 8 minutes. The Memorex DVD+RW burned at 4x taking right at 15 minutes for a full DVD. Also copied a CD at a brisk 24x. So far only annoyance is that DVD ripping is pretty slow; something like 3-4x instead of the 9x the competition offers. Have asked NU tech. support to fix this. Also awaiting release of the promised (by NU) firmware update that will allow -R/-RW burning. If they fix those two "problems" this thing will be damn near perfect short of dual-layer capability. The DVD-ROM bit set DVD+R plays in all my set top players (old Pioneer, old Panasonic, newer Panasonic), none of which would play a DVD+R book type DVD. All but the old Panasonic will also play the DVD+RW with book type set to DVD-ROM. By comparison, all three will also play a Memorex DVD-R.

With the bit-setting capability, this unit is a reasonable alternative to a +/- burner, but it will be nice when/if NU adds the -R/-RW firmware update.

This is a very nice unit that I just ordered from NewEgg for $134. It is well reviewed and seems to have just one significant negative (other than not doing "-" writing), that is that it is a slow ripper of DVD-video disks: 3x vs. 9x for virtually all other 8x burners. Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update. On the positive side, Anandtech says that NU has been saying repeatedly that there will be a firmware update to enable "-" burning in "mid-December". We'll see.

If the slow read of DVD-video is an issue consider the very similar Benq 800 model. That unit has an 8M buffer, but no rumours of a "-" write firmware update.

Excellent results to 2.4x (RICOHJPNR00), 4x (BeAll 4x) 4x @ 8x (RICOHJPNR01 & MCC 02) media. The drive supports bit-setting to DVD-ROM for excellent compatability. 8x Z-CLV writing is completed in approx 8min 30 secs. Installation is simple and uncomplicated. Drive pricing in Australia around $275 ($160 US). Future firmware upgrades from nu will see improved media compatability and further 4x @ 8x suitability. Possible Dual capabilities are also hinted. Ona the whole an excellent drive at the price of a 4x burner.

I was able to burn 8x successfully on Verbatim (1-4x) +R media. I have not used any other media yet. DVD read speeds seem to be average, but going to put drive on a serpate IDE channel to see if it speeds up performance. So far have not had any problems. good value burner!
