Just bought at Circuit City for $149 after $30 mail in rebate. Flawless (no action required) setup on XP Pro. "Backed Up" two DVD's with DVD X Copy with Maxell DVD -R media, no errors. Haven't had a chance to use bundled software, probably won't be using it that much anyway since I got this drive for "backing up" full length movie DVD's and X copy worked so seamlessly.

I bought this the week before Thanksgiving to replace a Iomega (NEC) Dual format drive. NO regrets here. So far, I have been able to burn TDK -R, Verbatim -R and Imation +R media without updating firmware. I believe it already had the most current anyhow.

My previous Pioneer and Iomega could not burn dvd's that would play in my Expedition but the Sony does.
My only complaint is the bezel. They could have given a more neutral one or just make it black or plain white.

Also, for those of you who are thinking of getting one, you can get it at staples right now for really cheap.
I paid 100 or so after the Mail in rebate/30 dollar coupon/12% customer appreciation email. The customer appreciation email won't actually be valid till the 5th of December but good nonetheless.

Just got this today at circiut city for $179.95 and a $30.00 rebate which means only $149.95 for a sony !!

So far works awesome ... no coasters burns really fast easily installed on xp pro.

I upgraded from a toshiba sdr 5002 never did burn at 2x always at 1x tried several media types on it too..

The sony burns at true 1x 2x 4x speeds .. if the media says it that is what it burns at.

All in all for 149.95 how can you not afford to grab this all in one burner?

Buy this writer about a month ago in Compusa for $169 after a $30 rebate. I updated to 1.0d firmware from Sony website and I'm burning Fujifilm and Ritek GO4 at 4X (-R) with Nero 6. Everything is fine with a 100% success rate. However, as someone posted, this is a noisy drive. And the eject trace has a cheap feeling to it. It doesn't look so bad as that same person posted, its just different. But if you are going to burn a lot of DVDs (like I do) this is a reliable workhorse for a good price. And its not picky with media either (Read 'n Burn).

The DRU510A is a reliable recordable DVD drive that's a pleaseure to use. Supports many formats and can write on some of the most dreadfully poor media you could imagine. Top marks for function.

HOWEVER... if you are concerned about looks and build quality, you may want to consider a different drive. The DRU510A stands out from the crowd like a camel in a strip club. The white/silver combination fascia is dreadful- however, the unit is shipped with a black replacement front, which beleive it or not, is more desirable to look at- even in your beige colored system. The drive ejection system sounds... well... bad. It's rough and there's great deal of play in the mechanics. Fortunately, somehow this doesn't appear to impede the drive's function.

Just got this writer, so far it handles all the cheap dvd & cd-r that I throw at it, burn speed as expected average. Read speed is good, the latest firmware must have fixed the slow read that some user have complained when the drive first come out.
The down side for this writer would be the build quality, the lack of a hack firmware for region free, & wouln't do over burn.

I was originally considering a TDK 440N for my purchase. I needed a solution to get a DV movie shot a couple years ago (which has now been through super post) out to DVD in house. I had purchased a TDK 52x CD Writer back last year, and am very happy with it, so that was the manufacturer I was planning on sticking with. But when I found out that the TDK burners are manufactured by Plextor with just a TDK tag and other issues here on this site I focused my interest on this burner instead.

Setup was a breeze. I run two ide controller cards on my system (1 mboaord, one promise card) for a total of four ide channels, and 8 devices. The 510 took up the Secondary Master of the Secondary IDE Controller perfect, was detected right off, and was ready to burn in XP Pro SP1 at bootup without even going through a driver installation process.

First burn to DVD+RW was a breeze, and surprisingly it played on my early 2002 Magnavox player (which doesn't even do DVD-Rs supposedly). Software included is intuitive (for the consumer level) but I plan on using more sophisticated software to further customize my DVD creation. Not sure how that's going to work out yet.

I highly recommend this burner, especially that as of today, Best Buy has it for $150 after a $30 mail-in rebate. Now that the prices are coming down due to the introduction of 8x, these things are really starting to become affordable. Now only if the media would get cheaper.

My rating of 9/10 is only because I've never physically worked with any other burners. But I do not know how I could be better satisfied.

NOTE: I did go forward and updated the firmware to the "D" version you can find on the Sony site before trying any burning. I had ready on this list where that has been helpful, so I just decided to do it. The update process was quick, and flawless. It only required 2 reboots to get things to update without any applications running.

NOTE: I'm not a big fan of Sony home theater products. If you're turned off by the brand name "SONY" in other applications -- do not let your opinion of them get the best of the oppotunity to work with this burner.

I couldn't have imagined a better introduction to DVD burning.

Great burner, had this for more than 5months, and already put it to use at least 300 times. All DVD burns, not yet burn any CDRs. Got the latest firmware 1.0d

So much negative crap about this writer, yet my burns like it's out of the box.

At the Sony Support site, you can get an upgrade to MyDVD 5.2, as well as Firmware Update to 1.0D

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm

DSS (Drive Speed Selector) is Sony software that allows you to optimize the read/write speed of your DRU-510A and DRX-510UL DVD/CD rewritable drives only.

Skip the ridiculous survey and get the Drive Speed tool here for the US

or here for Europe

I've had this drive for about 2 months, and yesterday it died. I was burning a dvd in Nero and made the mistake of opening another app during this. Now the drive does the same no response/ blinking light/ no eject shit that I've seen described a few times here. Also found it to be quite picky in regards to dvd-r media.

No compatibily problems yet with Sony DVD -R 1X media, not yet tried with cheaper or faster ones, but going from the first experience I liked the drive.

Just got my OEM version of DRU510A (SONY DW-U14A) yesterday.

Burned CD-R at 10x 24x depends on your CD-R max speed.
Burned DVD video on Fujifilm DVD+RW at 2.4x (even though the DVD+RW I got is rated 2x at Fujifilm site)
Burned data on Fujifilm DVD+RW using InCD packet writing.

In addition to these, it also read my old CD-RW disks perfectly which I thought were damaged. Now I know my 4 year old Yamaha 4416 has aged too much.

I am gonna burn some 4X DVD+R when I get a chance.

Just bought this. Had been eyeing the DRU500A for about
a year (glad to get this improved model for the same
price instead). One mistake in this web sites description
of the model. The DVD-ROM speed is 12x, not the listed 8x.
Anyway, just got it installed. DVD movie played okay.
Wrote a quick CD-R. Still need to test the DVD writer
abilities, but so far so good. I just need to find some
cheap DVDs to practice on. :^) (CD-Rs $0.10 each with
rebates, DVD-R and DVD+R about $2.50 each without rebate,
and still around $2.00 each with rebate)...

The "SONY BOOT DRU-510A" problem.

If windows labels so your drive, it is dead.
After 4 burns the drive's door didn't work and the orange led flashed and flashed. I returned the drive to the store and I change it for an LG (GSA-4040B).
I have read the same problem in a number of forums.

10/06/2003 Newegg has for $209.00

This has been an excellent drive. Though there are a few quirks. One is the slooooow read speed. But if you DSS from Sony you can boost the read speeds to a tolerable level. I did have problems burning DVDs at first, but found that the media I was using, was not capable of 4x writes. I know it sounds silly, but the vendor did not have any indication as to the speed of the media, nor on the store shelf was anything marked properly. Be sure to get the correct media (clearly idendified, if you cannot tell the speed of it, do not buy it) and things should work great. For $209 this is the drive to have in my opinion. Gave it a 9, because I should not have to be made to download an extra piece of software to make it read faster.

Got a replacement drive today, it seems to work well. Burned 3 different kinds of DVDs without errors! Hope it will stay this way :) Otherwise it's a great burner..

I've had this 6 months now and it is a champ. I use it to burn all sorts of video and data content. I use it as an external drive and back up my 6 computers with Norton Ghost using a firewire connection to DVD. Every machine has been able to boot off the drive when I want to reload an image. No problems with DVD-r or DVD-rw.

To get the DSS 1.0 tool and skip the survey.

Got this burner at BestBuy couple of months ago, now it's Oct 1st, and i've burned so far at least 125 movies, 60 ps2 games, 20 data backup. Managed to burned 4x on K-Hypermedia DVD-R, 4X on Memorex DVD+R, works even better with TDK, Philips, and FujiFilm media. I got about 20 coaster (16 khypermedia, 3memorex, 1fujifilm), only happens when it begins to write, never happens in the middle or end. D/l 1.0C firmware, didn't notice a difference. The only worst part is i can only read DVD disc at 2x, gotta find a way to unlock the read speed. I'm satisfied with this product already, if it does break down, i wouldn't mind buying another one.

So far so good. Just bought this sucker today. Burned a DVD back-up of one of my DVD's using DVD shrink & dvd decrypter. Perfect burn! Used the 2X TDK DVD-R (on sale at Best buy for 29.99 25 PK!!)Simple to install. Did not use any of the software that came with the burner so I am not sure how the quality of that is.

Two days ago I purchased the TDK external DED+440 +/-R =/-RW because it was a little cheaper and I wanted to go external. What a mistake. Tried to burn 3 times. All coasters. Got I/O errors on all 3. It said that the media was incompatible with the writer. I used the TDK media I listed above. How could the media thats made by my writer be incompatible with the writer??? Had to upgrade my computer to USB 2.0 and go through a whole lost of hassles to even get the writer to be usable.

I will post more updates as I continue to play around with this writer. SO SONY!!

For those who are disappointed with the DVD read speads on this drive, sony has software on their support site that lets you adjust the speed of the drive so that it will read DVDs faster. It is called DSS Version 1.0. Sony requires that you take a survey before you can download it.

I was very satisfied with my DRU-510A. Bought it on 9.9 and yesterday it broke down :( Wouldn't write any DVD-RWs or +RWs, just gave a write error. Also it was unable to erase discs, just locked up the whole drive and kept the disc spinning at max. Well I have a replacement coming and I hope it'll last longer.

My previous Sony burner CDU-928E is 5 years old and still going strong.
