Bought in 2006. Everything works fine and I use Verbatim DVDs with no problems.
Its DVD laser was off in mid 2008. It no longer reads nor burn DVDs. It can only read CDs. The lifespan is about 1.5-2 years only. :(

Very good drive. I can't find disks that this drive refuse to burn.

I'm using the retail box version of this drive. SHM-165P6S04C. Having said this I have burned Memorex Dual Layer (Ritek) in this drive with no problems vs the Pioneer 109 that only works about 1/2 the time with the same batch.

Normally I use Verbatim and Sony MIJ/MIT with no problems. Office Max or maybe it's Office Depot $19 a 100 -R/+R Optodisc and Princo Both burn good and play good in this drive. It seems to be less picky than my Pioneer 109 and it's sibling in my DVD recorder.

Keep in mind that I burn the DLs at 2.4 and not overspeed which was offered. And I burn the 16X at 6X to 8X and the cheapo brands at 4X.

This writer has very good writing capabilities on +R media; the unit has overspeed capabilities, also can adjust the writing strategy to obtain the best quality and does quality test. So for the price it competes well in the market being a reliable and also silent unit in both reading (12x) and writing.

The unit seems to be hit or miss with any media. Rtiek has a 50% failure rate on verify and Playo (Ricoh) have about a 30% failure rate. I've been happy with LiteOn in the past, but I'm beginning to think they may not be as good as they used to be.

My rating is not really final, just a preliminary impression since I just got it. I tried to burn with "supported" (per Liteon manual) 4x TDK DVD+R (and "unsupported" Imation 4x DVD+R) media using Nero 6 and 3 out of 4 failed verification. I also tried one Teon 8x DVD+R and it burned fine but only at 1x. It took 50 minutes to burn 3.8GB of data. Yuck. I am currently trying to find media that I know will be reliable which brought me to this site but lo, I am the first one to make a comment. Maybe this will get a ball rolling. I bought it from Tiger Direct for $30 after rebate. Great Value if the stupid thing works. I have an older LiteOn and have had problems with same media so I hope it is just my media. I am probably going to buy Verbatim DVD+R and try to Taiyo Yuden since it is recommended and supposedly the best. Will submit more posts.
