Bought from NewEgg for $105, and its one of my best buy this year. I tested it using Maxell 1X-4X 4.7GB DVD+R. I didn't bother using the bundled software since it had such bad reviews here(Sonic), and you have to unstall 'Intel Accelerator' which I didn't want to do. I used DVD Encrypter to rip my 'Slayers The Movie' DVD, then burned it by ImgTools. It was flawless, 5 mins to rip and 5 mins to burn (both estimates). The backup copy works with my Panasonic S35 DVD player, Xbox and PS2. Then I used the Lite-On 4X DVD+R that came in the package to backup my Data, it was also a success. The only problem I have is its Long read time on first spin, otherwise its all good. I've been using TDKs and Ritek (4X 4.7GB) DVD+R's and no coasters.

I have had this drive for 2 days now and I love it! I purchased it from NCIX for $149.98 (Canadian) and haven't looked back. Not only is this drive a speedy and good quality writer, but it also is an incredible DVD reader! This drive has read even my CRAPPIEST burned DVDs, which so far no other PC DVD drive has been able to read more then half of, and this drive read them as if they were store bought DVD movies!

Combine all that with the ability to reliably test the burned media using K-Probe, and you have the perfect DVD Writing solution for even the pickiest techie, or the most cash conscious individual. I wouldn't trade this drive for anything! not even the Plextor 708A which can burn DVD+R media at 8x, AND DVD-R media at 4x.

Awesome DVD burner, only had one disk fail. Bought it for $82.00 on NEW EGG. Retail box too. Have been using DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink. ^^

Well priced, uncomplicated burner for +R/RW burning. 4X +RW as backup with Nero6 Multi-session has been faultless. As mentioned below the use of RICOHJPNR00 media (2.4x rating, about 80% of all +R discs are these) provides for 4x writing strategy with this unit. DVD-Video burns are acceptable on players that play +R as +R. No ability to bitset is available , nor reading of Blank Disc type in DVDinfoPro (Firmware Version ES0E). Perhaps this will change as further revisions of firmware come through. Highly Recommended for those familiar with +R style burning.

I have only used it for a little while. The drive performed well and is 144.99 at www.newegg.com. It burned Fuji 2.4 DVD+R disks at 4x with out a hitch. I have an issue with the Sonic MYDVD that came with it. In order to install it you need to remove Intel Application Accelerator if you have it intsalled. If you install with it intalled your machine will not boot. It is clearly printed on the disk. If you boot with last known good configuration you will be OK. Although some parts of MYDVD will not work. But those were covered by nero 6 (did not come with drive). It also works well as a 40/24/40 cd burner.

This is a great alternative to the pricey multi-format burners. This drive is speedy, burning +Rs and +RWs at 4X, CDRs at 40X, and CDRWs at 24X. I have tested all modes, except the 24X CDrw (haven't found the high speed media locally yet). The +R and +RWs play fine in my stand alone players, and my Playstation 2!
I bought this drive mainly for data backups, and for transferring TV episodes to DVD, so I can stop staring at my small monitor!
The LDW-401S has performed flawlessly thus far, I do not forsee any problems as Lite-on has a great reputation for stable and speedy burners.
