Bought it in July 2003 it worked great after firmware upgrade up until Sept 2004 when it just stopped writing.
It said it was but it wasn't now have a few more coasters.
Unfortunately i can't recommend this one to anyone.
Do your research first and wait to see what people are saying.
This is my third comment and i'm not happy any more.
I have to say it was good all the time it worked but a person should expect more than a year.

Do NOT buy this drive. It is crap.

I say this after 6 months of messin about with different combinations. Now have NERO, use ritek 4x-r, cannot for the life of me get it to burn any more at 4x - "power calibration error."

Buy something else, that's my advice.

I suggest keep away from this thing, if you still haven't bought a one. My first drive broke completely after couple of months so I got a new drive with warranty (still this same model) and it has been working _quite_nice_ for 3 months now. But who knows how long..

My question: anyone tried 90min/800mb cd-r:s with this Dual DVD drive? Did it work? Couldn't find any info anywhere on net.

Maybe i just got a dud but this drive has caused so many hassles (even after the firmware upgrade) i will be returning it.If we could go negative numbers on the rating i would be giving this drive a -3. Supplied software is crap. Spend a bit more money and get a better quality drive i know thats what im going to do.

Seemed fine until a few days ago (after about a month), when it suddenly decided to become a coaster maker - 8 consecutive coasters so far (with different branded media - including TDK, different programs and burning at 2x to be conservative), will get a RW disc to practice on more, but I'm most likely going to try to get it replaced soon.

So far I'm less than impressed.

Cannot get this drive to work with Stomp Record Now Max or Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0. Both say a supported drive is not found. I need something that will work with the drive to burn ISO's. Drive is installed in a Dell 2.4ghz 4600 I think. Not happy with drive so far. Enclosed software isn't very good, weak support for DVD.

Hello from downunder, I had a problem with the drive 2months of use. However, the online technical support team was very helpful. We later found to be a hardware fault. I had it returned for full manufacturers warranty within 2 days with a replacement. By the way, this happened during the christmas period. Well done to their team. I tell you now that their support team is the best I have dealt with to date. The drive was replaced without any further questions. I just had to fill in a 1 page form which states what the problem is and thats it. They didnt even ask or look for a receipt.

By upgrading the firmware to 1.21 it has accepted more medias. I had a princo before and it was only writing at 2x and now is writes at 2x & 4x. I have no trouble using Princo Medias. All family and friends dvd players reads the media very well.

So, after much messin about I have discovered:
Burns fine every time with Datasafe +rw at 4x. Can only burn Ritek -r printable at 2x - else coasters.
What I want: any format 4x printable surface disks.
What iomega say: go for sony or phillips or datasafe.
What I Say: Fine, but can you find 4x printable with these brands - no!
Can anyone reccommend a site or brand???? Or maybe a trusty brand of hammer with which to trash my drive!
(P.S. - Updated firmware to iomega latest + also someone's recc below which believe to be the flash above this - no joy).

It deppends on your media. I burn DVD-R at 4X with any media that permits it and with Philips DVD+R I also burn at 4X. The usual is 2.4 X but with Philips I can burn at 4x.
Best Regards,

Miguel Semedo

Was able to make DVDs with writer (both DVD+R and DVD+RW. DVDs will play in laptop dvd reader but not on panasonic DVD-RV32 DVD player. Using Maxell DVD+R disks.
Why is it not working for me?

anyone have a problem with the drive reading a dvd+r too quickly? the audio and video are both sped up. i've been using cinematic to view the dvd, as windvd platinum wouldn't work with this drive. any ideas?

Great drive. Have it for 2 weeks now. I used about 20 memorex 4x dvd+r, and burns beautifully using pinnacle studio 8. The final product plays very well on my panasonic s35k and cyberhome xx300.

The only problem was that it was recognizing compusa 1x dvd-r as 2x dvd-r and I also burned that. But it produced nice coasters after burning for 10 minutes using pinnacle. Then I tried roxio to burn a data dvd (roxio also thinks this is a 2x dvd-r media) and it burned till 93% and then gave errors. I checked the final dvd and looks like most of the data is readable.

So I upgraded firmware to 1.21. This also did not solve the problem.

Another thing I tried was using burnatonce to copy a video_ts I had saved to my hard drive. This did burn correctly, and my pc can read it, but my paansonic cannot. Don;t know whats going on there.

Since I am going to be using memorex dvd+r, I think the drive is pretty good. I have not used the software that came with the drive at all.

Used this for 2 days now. Seems pretty good.
First problems where about media not recognised.
After firmware this problem was gone. Seems this is a standard thing from DVD Writers makers. :P
Good thing we have people doing some non official firmware.
Check the http://herrie.rpc1.org/ link if you have problems with some dvd media. Alway read the info to see if it solves your problem.

Mine is a NEC 1300A.
It came with a TDK dvd+rw. I burnt it at 2.4 in Nero6 and put into
my daewoo 3000n dvd player. Worked great! Need to try other media now...

Firmware out of box was 1.20.

The Writer works well with EMTEC DVD-RW and DVD+RW (both with 2.4x max), Sony DVD+R (1x-4x), Philips DVD+R (1x-4x) and Verbatim DVD+R (1x-2.4x).

Problems with TDK DVD+RW (1x-4x) -> The Writer is reacting, as there were no disc in drive. Media can't be written either erased.

I haven't tried DVD-R yet.

Overall: Writing is ok, sometimes troubles with erasing.

Best regards from Berlin, Germany

Don't burn DVD-R

Comments posted by JPNE from Other, November 02, 2003. Rated this writer No rating.

i'm not very happy with this drive. after a firmware change, it now reads almost all media i put in. the real problem for me is that he's recognised as a 2x only drive with dvd-r (with xp and nero 6.0 and a lot of other software...)

Hi.

Zangarr, you must try burning with other authoring software, like Nero, or CopyToDVD, or even CloneDVD. Try with freeware or trialware software, so you what software to buy (if that's the case)

Search here in dvdrhelp.com for guides on How To Burn, so you what Burning options you must use / select.

I Own a Philips DVD957 and I had no compatibility problems so far.

Best Regards from Portugal.

Recently I bought this recorder and at this moment I cannot burn any DVD that my Toshiba SD 220 E can read.

The Toshiba specifications tell about his compatibility with main formats: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW.

The DVD burned works well in my computer and in a cheap Daewoo DVD.

I try with the following brands: Sony +R, Philips and Verbatim +RW, Emtec -RW and a bulk brand called Silver Shadow in -R format and none works in the Toshiba.

I use DVD Shrink and the Iomega HotBurn Pro software.

What do I do wrong? or maybe the failure is in the Toshiba DVD or in the software.

Do anyone use the Iomega HotBurn Pro software?.

Thanks in advance from Spain. Great web
