I've found that the trick for showing the firmware version on many other Toshiba DVD players works fine for this one as well.

Power on the DVD player with no disc in it.
Press Zoom on the remote.
Press 6
Press 0
Press 6
Press Zoom again.
It gives you info on the ROM versions, the OSD languages, the video format, the dimmer, and the SRV.

My Toshiba SD 310V DVD player, Region 1, was easily made Region Free with the CD hack for the SD 220E-no problem. I played a PAL DVD just fine.

Then I got another DVD from Europe, made by Carlton, marked Region 0, PAL.

It wouldn't play-as soon as it was 'read", a "Non-NTSC" sign appeared on the screen.

After much effort-I figured out the hack:

Step 1: Click "Display"-enter "2" in T, "1" in C -hit PLAY-it will NOT play.

Then:

Step 2: With the clock highlighted, hit "1" so 1 second is entered.
Hit PLAY
Hit ZOOM -you will see the first picture of the movie-not the legal warnings (it bypasses them, and that's what allows the DVD to play). To get rid of the Display icons on the screen, hit DISPLAY repeatedly, until they all disappear.

DO NOT HIT "MENU" on the remote control while viweing the movie-it will put you back into the "Not NTSC" screen.

Don't waste your time trying to omit Step 1-no joy!
