After trying a whole load of supposedly more sophisticated DVD authoring packages to edit my recorded DVD’s I am so glad I found this program. It is so easy and fast to use and more importantly it works with VOB files and AC3 audio. The only other program I found that would work with these is ShowBiz but it was painfully slow to use and the quality of the end result was average at best. Quality with TMPGEnc is almost on a par with the source material. Menu templates are a bit limited but as you can create you own (using graphics created in PhotoShop for example) this is really a minor quibble.
The only features I would like added would be some sort of basic (optional) fade transition between chapter edits. At the moment you can only cut out the frames you don’t want but this can cause the transition to be a bit abrupt when played back. The second feature would be the ability to add a backing soundtrack to the menu. As far as I can tell this can only be done if the ‘file’ you are using as the background image also contains audio but maybe I’m wrong on this.
Also on audio the one thing that didn’t seem to work was the audio in the editing window. I could play back the footage during editing but there was never any sound. Maybe this is down to it being AC3 (which can’t be re-encoded) but hopefully something can be done about this in future releases.
Overall this is a good program that does what it says. For creating DVD’s with menu’s it hard to beat and if you want more sophisticated options then this is most probably not aimed at you. One or two additions would make it better but I wouldn’t like to see it become top heavy with fancy feature that are not used very often. Keep it easy and fast. |
