I use NeroVision Express for most of my casual DVD authoring, because it really is relatively quick and easy, and reasonably functional. I've tried some of the other packages, but they are either not significantly better, or just too expensive to buy for casual use.
The Good:
- Accepts any AVI or MPEG files, transcodes and burns in one easy step
- Reasonable user interface, once you get used to it
- Quick menu creation from a library of templates with a little customization
- Simple timeline-style video editor built in to do clipping and appending, or offset audio/video tracks
- Can produce NTSC or PAL video, AC3 or LPCM audio
- Can save output to hd folder or image file as well as burning
The Bad:
- Transcoding performance acceptable, but not great (takes a couple of hours for a full DVD on my 2.5 GHz system)
- Always transcodes, even if the file is already MPEG-2
- Menu creation is a bit too simple and inflexible, e.g., can't make sub-menus
- Minor compatibility problems: some software can't read the resulting DVDs (DVD Shrink for one, ATI's DVD player for another), occasional audio sync problems with XVid AVIs (corrected in the video editor timeline) |
