Version history / Release notes / Changelog

Version 2.6
Release date - 29th November, 2017.

New features
x265 can now refine analysis from a previous HEVC encode (using options --refine-inter, and --refine-intra), or a previous AVC encode (using option --refine-mv-type). The previous encode’s information can be packaged using the x265_analysis_data_t data field available in the x265_picture object.
Basic support for segmented (or chunked) encoding added with --vbv-end that can specify the status of CPB at the end of a segment. String this together with --vbv-init to encode a title as chunks while maintaining VBV compliance!
--force-flush can be used to trigger a premature flush of the encoder. This option is beneficial when input is known to be bursty, and may be at a rate slower than the encoder.
Experimental feature --lowpass-dct that uses truncated DCT for transformation.
Encoder enhancements
Slice-parallel mode gets a significant boost in performance, particularly in low-latency mode.
x265 now officially supported on VS2017.
x265 now supports all depths from mono0 to mono16 for Y4M format.
API changes
Options that modified PPS dynamically (--opt-qp-pps and --opt-ref-list-length-pps) are now disabled by default to enable users to save bits by not sending headers. If these options are enabled, headers have to be repeated for every GOP.
Rate-control and analysis parameters can dynamically be reconfigured simultaneously via the x265_encoder_reconfig API.
New API functions to extract intermediate information such as slice-type, scenecut information, reference frames, etc. are now available. This information may be beneficial to integrating applications that are attempting to perform content-adaptive encoding. Refer to documentation on x265_get_slicetype_poc_and_scenecut, and x265_get_ref_frame_list for more details and suggested usage.
A new API to pass supplemental CTU information to x265 to influence analysis decisions has been added. Refer to documentation on x265_encoder_ctu_info for more details.
Bug fixes
Bug fixes when --slices is used with VBV settings.
Minor memory leak fixed for HDR10+ builds, and default x265 when pools option is specified.
HDR10+ bug fix to remove dependence on poc counter to select meta-data information.

Linux x265 Install Instructions
# ubuntu packages:
$ sudo apt-get install mercurial cmake cmake-curses-gui build-essential yasm
# Note: if the packaged yasm is older than 1.2, you must download yasm (1.3 recommended) and build it

$ hg clone https://bitbucket.org/multicoreware/x265
$ cd x265/build/linux
$ ./make-Makefiles.bash
$ make

Mac OS X x265 Install Instructions
The latest Mac OS X 10.8 gcc and clang based compilers can build x265 using the linux instructions above. Xcode 5 with the most recent patches can build, debug, and profile x265.

Aug 9, 2017 Version: 2.5+6-d11482e5fedb OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 7/10 Functionality: 8/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 9/10

I'll second that, it has some time to go before it unseats x264. I'm sure it will be fine a couple years down the line when hardware has been adapted to it but at the moment the code just drains CPU power, and any video encoded in x265 is a massive decoding nightmare to process it. MX player on android plays it but not smoothly and powers seeps away from the tablet battery same as in any Windows based laptop even with a fast processor. I tried encoding a file in x265 and it was so SLOoooW! Chinese(no offense!) water torture springs to mind. X264vfw is still the tops for me!!!

Jul 1, 2017 Version: stable & nightly OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 6/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 7/10

Long way to go yet as h264 is still the king, but this pretender to the throne keeps getting better and better. Maybe somebody can develop a great GUI like Fairuse Wizard/AutoGK to work with it?

Jun 24, 2017 Version: latest revision OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 7/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 8/10

Let's make this clear h265 is nowhere near as good as h264 in terms of hardware compatibility, visually at high bitrates h264 is still superior and at low bitrates h265 oversmooths/washes out detail. Yes, it might be the codec of the future for 4k/TV presentations etc, but try processing this on your PC even with a super fast cpu and it takes hours for Joe bloggs! Plus you have go know what you are doing using this, most 99.9% are clueless and noobs not fan boys who are having an orgasm over every new build. Many years to go yet before it unseats h264!!!

Jun 23, 2017 Version: latest OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 1/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 5/10

Excellent encoder with really good compression efficiency, even with 8 bit. I have used x264 as well and finding x265 is improving and closing gap with big brother x264.

Job well done.

this doesnt work AT ALL, you dowload it, you execute it, and then a black screen opens and close in a fraction of second

Xvid style encoder were every preset is pleasing for the eye in contrast to x264 were only Placebo prevents eye cancer but there is one huge problem as it looks artificial as there is a film over it (others called it washed out)

Oct 23, 2015 Version: 1.7.0.374 OS: Windows 8 64-bit Ease of use: 5/10 Functionality: 5/10 Value for money: 5/10 Overall: 5/10

I have been using the stable version non stop with excellent results. Far more superior than x264 and this is only the beginning. A big thank you to the developers for this amazing encoder.

Oct 10, 2015 Version: 1.8.31 OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

Can't believe I'm the first to review such a great program here. The compression of this encoder is unreal and getting cleaner and faster as time goes on. By my own tests, 1.7 is about 33% faster than 1.6 which is amazing and hope further optimizations happen. x264 had to start somewhere and x265 will be no different.

Over the past month I have been encoding with it on high bitrate x264 files that I don't care to keep at their current file size, so I encode them with this with avisynth to retain most of the detail at a fraction of the size. I'm also doing this just to get a handle on this new HEVC beast.

All I need now is a HEVC TV Player...
