I have this unit running in an external enclosure with USB and Firewire connectivity. So far have only used it inder USB connection.

Had problems at first, first two attempts were coasters, but flashing the firmware to most recent version seems to have fixed everything and no problems since.

I just picked this up today, and have been running into a couple of issues. Maybe someone can help out.

1. Set up fine, and drive reads DVDs fine. However, none of my players want to play the DVD in the drive. I have tried both WinDVD and the Ulead DVD player that comes with the unit.

2. When I try to upgrade to the 1.4 firmware, nothing seems to pop up. Am I doing anything wrong? I have logged in to the www.rpc1.com site, but nothing happens.

I am anxious to get this going, and this is a little frustrating to say the least. I appreciate any help I can get

Thx

Got it with FW 1.17, worked perfectly.
Upgraded to FW 1.40 (A09 XL version), with Pioneer QuietDrive utility now it's also ripping up to 12x
Didn't try it at 16x burning, but up to 8x and double layer it works very well.

This drive is class, no problems at all, now burns xbox images
without problems too, I updated to the 1.40 bios from www.rpc1.com, I recommend everyone with problems trys the same.

I use Bulkpaq & ritek media.

Every rate below 9 for this DVD writer is BS. I have 109 already 6 weeks, and so far I burned 73 DVD's without any prob's at all.
30 of them are TDK (DVD+R 16x), 20 Verbatim (DVD+R 16x), 18 Verbatim (DVD-R 8x and 4X) and 5 (old batch) Princo (DVD-R 4X). Not even single coaster.
He is fast and silent. Also, no prob's with reading burned DVD's in other DVD readers (two standalone DVD players, and my old Asus DRW-0402P/D).
Shortly, not a sigle problem so far! Clean 10 here...

Very poor DVD+RW drive.

Out of all my existing media it will only burn to Verbatim DVD+RWs

A1PRO - FAIL
Ricoh - FAIL
Memorex - FAIL
Verbatim - OK

Even my first generation 2.4xRicoh DVD+RW drive had better compatibility than this junk.

Even with an upgrade to 1.40 I still get many compatability issues. Steer well clear of this drive until Pioneer sort out the firmware.

Easy installation and not finicky with lower quality media.

Update: New firmware version 1.40 fixes the compatibility problem (Dansai 852 plays, hopefully will make XBox discs now) but the burn interruptions still happen at all speeds ...

Wanted to replace my 107D since I can finally find 16x DVDR.

Burned almost 20 16x , no coasters yet.

Just got my DVD-109 and worked great right out of the box. Installed very easily with my DVD-105 and now have 2 writers installed in my computer. Burned 3 DVD's on the DVD-109 at 8x without any problems at all with Nero 6.6.0.6. I have never had any problems as I use Ritek disks and have not had one coaster in the 3 years I have used my burners.

I did update the firmware from Pioneer's site to the 1.17 version and had no problem doing that either. My experience with Pioneer has always been good and this purchase is no exception. I am very pleased with the DVD-109 and can't wait to get the price of disks lower to try out the Dual Layer disks. But until the price comes down, will continue to burn at 8x using Ritek.

Firmware problems (still as of 1.17) - AVOID until fixed. This new model is surprisingly selling LOWER than the A08/108 - and now I see why. I should have known better.

For one, this drive will not make a smooth burn at ANY speed. Its buffer underruns (and recovers with BurnProof) about every 5-30 seconds, despite being set up properly and operating in Ultra DMA mode 4 on a controller by itself. CD Speed shows the burst rate as 13900 KB/s. By contrast, my DVD-ROM drive only uses Ultra DMA mode 2, and tests as 2500 KB/s, yet the interface is still fast enough to read at 15X.

These are not speed shifts, they happen even at 4X-6X. I've had it lock up and coaster once as well. The buffer underruns show up in disc error/speed testing as multiple large spikes. My standalone players also stutter at these points if the bitrate is high. It's not just one defective drive either, see the forums for multiple reports of this.

Second, there seems to be a standalone compatibility issue as well. My older Dansai 852 player rejects ALL discs from this burner instantly. It never has a problem with discs from my A06.

Relegated to data use only until Pioneer fixes it. Useless for video the way it stands. I hope they restore my faith in Pioneer as the best brand of burner ...

Very quiet and reliable with media it likes (good brands), but maybe a bit young: with fw 1.17 Ritek 16X +R are still recognized at 4X only, and no overspeed for MCC 4x/8x.
I bought it hoping that it will last till DL is affordable since this unit burns them at 6X.

added the pioneer 109 to a 2nd computer- so far, so good- kind of finicky though- see listed below:

1) burns my high quality TY discs (FUJI 8X-made in Japan)in amazing time apx 7.5 mins (actually goes 12X). My HP420I (NEC OEM) on 1st computer takes about 9.5 mins. My other FUJI 8X batch (made in Taiwan ProdiscF1) takes 8.5 mins. on the pioneer.

2) for my 4X rated discs (Maxell & other cheaper brands) it takes about 15 mins- but the same 4X discs takes 14 mins on the NEC OEM burner?? Go figure? Maybe pioneer is not as efficient with with lower grade discs??

3) reads extremely quick compared to my NEC OEM- in about 7.5 mins compared to 10 mins for NEC. Some of my older stuff (few months) sometimes can't read on the NEC- but will read on my pioneer. THIS PIONEER reads flawlessly.

4)other quirk- pioneer only writes at 4X for my Memorex (RitekRG05) discs when they are rated at 8X's- but my NEC will read same discs at 8X's- go figure again???

I never had any problems with reading or writing on the pioneer yet- I have 3 toshiba- 1 Sony- & 1 PS2 DVD players-& all my discs play problem-free on those players (these DVD players are pretty new)- BUT some of these same discs seem to have problems playing on my friends players?? I don't know?? It's all about compatability & DVD player age-
Seems some of the earlier DVD players have more problems- A friend has a latest model cheapie $49 dvd player & my disc plays perfect on it. Moral of my experiences?? What might work for one person might not for the next......

In conclusion....as far as the pioneer 109 goes- its an awesome burner! for me anyways...I can't understand why some of the other people are having all those problems.

It's my firt DVD burner and so far 3 coasters out of maybe 40 or 50 good discs. I attribute the coasters to my learning curve and not the burner. So far so good.

had this pioneer a few weeks now the only coaster's i have had are from a bad bacth a disc which my 108 has a hard time burning to them , i am using nero 6.1.3.20.most of the disc's i have only burn at 8x and the 108 burn's then at 12x apart from that it is a solid burner .i have also tryed dvd+r and dl's and cdr's it works fine , hope that new firwares sort out the burn speed's on the disc's, or ye before i forget i am using firware 1.09and it burns clv on most things .i am not going to give a high score just yet has the media sucks a the moment only had verbatim dvd-+r burn at 12x on this wrighter . the dvd-+rw's work fine to only got 4x at moment . it seem to take a little longer to read a pressed disc at time do not now why . come on pioneer get your finger out with this wrighter there is 16x media out there let us right at 16x not 12x on the disc aspart from that it ok but not great yet like you would expect from pioneer (the pioneer 108 was the same when it came out )

Very surprised that the drive used Z-CLV to burn rather than CAV/PCAV for 12x and 8x writing. All tyhe information aboout the 109 is that it should use PCAV!

A bit slower than the 108 but still a good drive. Awaiting DVD-R DL media!!!
Pulled apart the plastic wrapping, popped it into an external 5.25" drive bay with usb2 & firewire.
Used usb2, plugged it in to my trusty laptop- which
recognised it with no drivers required, first time
-sweet! i thought.
(one of the few things i like about xp.)
Then burned 5 coasters.
Tried different media, check jumper settings, cables, etc.
Updated to latest firmware (1.09 as of 6-2-05)....
More coasters.
Updated Nero 6...coaster.
Ditched Nero 6.
Tried RecordNow Max...coaster.
Went to Jaycar Electronics bought a $23 firewire cable to suit my laptop.
Unplugged usb2, Plugged in Firewire.
Tried burning a straight TDK cd-r data disc, w/RNMax..coaster.
Went into buring settings in RNMax and reduced burn speed to minimum.......tried data disc again..
20 mins later...SUCCESS!!!
1 disc! Out of 11!

Basically, i've paid over $200 AUD for one of the "Best" branded burners out, and it burns discs at he same speed as my 8yr old 1x burner!

But on the up-side i CAN produce industrial amounts of cup coasters, in record time! :D
ALL of which i write "i bought a pioneer". :)
Your probelm is not the burner,it is your external enclosure. The chipset can't handle high speed ATAPI device.
Search around for a chipset bios update or send the enclosure company an e-mail and ask for their advice. Running DVD is different than Hard drives in an external enclosure.

I’m running Dell XPS with 3.4 GHZ processor and XP. I install the burner and make over a 200 copies of DVD-R at X4 and X6 burn rate. No coaster made to date. DVD's products were Verbatim, Memorex, Fuji and a bunch of other brands (which ever is the cheapest). I've had the same results with the +R brands - No coasters period. I've burned over 50 +RDL and no coaster. I don't know what these other folks are doing but this burner works great.
In installation I set the burner up as computer select and in minutes I was burning DVD's. I'm using Nero 6.6 and have no problems with the read/write speed or media. I use Adobe Premier Pro 1.5 for compiling video into a DVD and again the result was flawless. Me.

Started with a NEC 3520. All DVD+R burns failed. Traded in for the Pioneer. Perfect burns that play on all home DVD players that I have tried. Payed a little more for the Pioneer, but now I am glad I traded in the NEC.

I had the same problem as the person who posted the 1st comment. I burned about 6 coasters, tried four different brands of media, but had no luck with all of them. After that I figured it was a problem with the writer and exchanged it for another one. It turns out that the drive was defective, as the new one I got works just fine. It burns at 12x with TDK 8x DVD+R media, and for some reason only burns at 12x with Verbatim 16x DVD+R media.

I just got it and so far have burned 5 coasters. It is possible it damaged in shipping, but for now, I have not been able to get anything to burn. It reads nice.
