this drive came in my packard bell notebook, i updated the firmware early-on. no reason other than there was a newer version than what i had. it has 1M34 firmware on for the last 2yrs, the only bad burns come when i move the laptop when its burning. i have used many different types of media, cheap and nasty to daylight robbery expensive. all good burns. only downside to this drive is its 1x and -r only does anyone know of a firmware to make this drive more compatible? Folks, I have a question. I use sony digital 8 camcorder TRV730. When i record the movie and run it from the camera to TV the picture quality is great. But when i write the DVD, its bad. please read below to know what i do... I download the movie on to my HP Pavillion desk top. Edit the movie with pinnacle software and make an avi file. Finally write the avi file on to a DVD using internal DVD writer with NERO 6 software. When i play that DVD there is a reduction in picture quality to almost 50%. Is that because of transcoding? or because of DVD writer quality? Is there any way to improve the picture quality? (Software or hardware) Thanks Tom trk111@yahoo.com Comments posted by Tom Scott from United States, January 31, 2005. Rated this writer No rating. |

Have not been able to burn any DVDs with Roxio 5 Platinum or Roxio ECDC 6. Burn always fails. Have updated the firmware with no change. Drive always burns CDs fine. I am going to try Nero 6 and see if I have better luck. The problems may be Roxio and not the drive. Comments posted by Diver Dan from New Zealand, September 29, 2004. Rated this writer 2 of 10. |

Came installed in a Satellite Pro laptop. With FW1330, would not recognise 4x (even 1/2/4x) DVD-R media. With FW1333, it recognises most discs, but only works reliably with good, branded media: TDK, Verbatim, Traxdata(!). Datawrite, Datasafe, Princo, Bulkpaq, etc. will complete writes, but are then not readable, even in the same drive. Comments posted by Damian Skeeles from United Kingdom, March 29, 2004. I have a Gateway laptop with the Toshiba SD-R6012 DVD burner. I've had it for two months with absolutely no problems. Not one coaster!! My only gripe is that I have not been able to find a firmware upgrade for it. The current version 1G32. (I assume G for Gateway) Comments posted by eMARTY from United States, February 19, 2004. Tried to Use EMTec DVD-R: With Firmware 1332, Drive froze with 5 out of 6 Media (Nero and DVD Decrypter). With Firmware 1337 7 out of 10 Media were recognized and burning was started, but about 50% failed with errors. No problems with Firmware 1332 and Sony DVD-R, Maxell DVD-R, Pioneer DVD-R and DVD-RW, Verbatim DVD-R and DVD-RW. Will try more media with 1334 Firmware. Only fails until I've use Verbatim DataLifePlus 2X. I've try Princo (cover white), burn ok but errors reading after 50% of the surface. Try Ritek (G03)...A disaster, can't burn after 6% progress. So imagine reading the DVD... Verbatim DataLifePlus : 5 success, One fail burning with IC7 (trial version). Success with DVD Decrypter burning .ISO Comments posted by Louis from Other, April 15, 2003. Rated this writer 5 of 10. |

This DVD Recorder is found in TOSHIBA (and SONY) notebooks. Suspect that once I stick with reliable blank media, that I will be very happy with the drive. Still some testing required, so I am giving the drive a lower rating for now. TEST RESULTS: Toshiba 2450 Notebook DVD Decrypter DVD2ONE NERO 5.5.10.15 PRASSI PRIMODVD 2.0 2 VIVASTAR "noname" DVD-R 1X 1 RITEK "noname" DVD-R 1X 1 VERBATIM DVD-RW Both VIVASTAR DVD-Rs are coasters. The burns completed successfully, but pixelate and lock up less than half way through. (Movies: SHR*K, M*MMYR*T*RNS) The RITEK DVD-R is perfect; burns and plays back on Standalone TOSHIBA, NORCENT, and on PC DVD-ROM. (Movie: M*MMYR*T*RNS) The VERBATIM DVD-RW burns successfully but only plays back in its entirety on PC DVD-ROM. Locks on TOSHIBA standalone (as expected), but also locked on NORCENT (UN-expected!!). Had one fail in only a few weeks use. I have tried the following three media types, only one with reliable success. Optodisc DVD-RW (OW470-000):1 Success 2 not recognized 1 froze while burning. Memorex DVD-RW: 1 Success 2 others not recognized by drive Verbatim DataLife Plus DVD-R: about 30 successes, only 1 coaster and that was my fault.
