Do not buy this product. They have horrible support (live chat stinks, website stinks and phone stinks). The drive will not burn at a speed above 2x (if you get it to work at all).

I took the drive back to the store and will honestly never buy an I/O Magic product again. It will truly be "magic" if you are completely satisfied with this product.

I've had this for a couple of weeks, and it is working great. I/O Magic sells this from 2 manufacturers, BTC and Optorite. Mine was the Optorite DD0401 which is printed on the label on top of the burner. You might want to ask to open the box before purchase so you get a good one. Upgraded to the OEM 310 firmware and so far so good. I have it installed in an older Oxford 911 based firewire box. 4X DVD-R burns are good, and 32x CD burns also good (I always burn at 32x or slower, not the CD's max speed). Ripping at between 5.0x at the beginning of the disk to 8.6x at the end.

I bought it at Office Depot for $149 with $50 in mail in rebates and $20 off for a new Office Depot card. So $79 bucks!!!

So far it works good. It wouldn't work with my current version of Easy CD/DVD 6, but worked with the included one. I can't find a newer firmware for it. I've disc copied CDRW to CDR. I've written and erased a CDRW. I written and erased a DVDRW. It came with a RIDATA DVDRW. I ripped a movie with DVD Shrink and wrote it with Easy CD/DVD 6 and it plays perfectly on my Apex 1100 DVD player. So far so good............

IDVDRW8D. I bought this dvd burner at compusa for 119 after
the rebates. I tried to copy my home made dvd using nero 6
and roxio 6 and they both worked okay with the TDK dvd-r 2x.
It played with my pioneer, jvc, go live, panasonic dvd player but it didn't play with my sharp.

The first one of these I bought was manufactured in October 2003 and was made by Optorite. Has a headset jack, volume control and forward button in addition to the eject button. It came with Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD, Pinnacle Studio 8 SE, and WinDVD.

Another store had this drive on sale and the first store refused to adjust it's price so I bought one from the store on sale.

The second drive I bought was manufactured in December 2003 and is made by some company called Top Glory Electronics. The drive itself is about half an inch longer and only has an eject button. It also just feels cheaper. For software, this one came with PowerDVD XP, Roxio Photosuite 5, and Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.

Needless to say, I packaged up the newer drive in the old box and returned that one.

HELP

Just started using this burner.

The only main problem I see so far is that it is incompatible with CloneCD and CloneDVD.

When I tried copying with CloneCD it wouldn't go over 4x and when I tried opening the CD contents, it froze.

But when I tried it worh Nero 6, and DVDx Copy Platinum, it works just fine.

Although one thing I do agree with with other I/O Products is that the software that comes with this burner is total crap. The only good program that comes with it is WinDVD.
Also the instructions for installing it don't really do anything for you. It tells you what ports you need to plug into, but it refers you to your computer owners manual to find out what they are.

Another thing I liked is that there are no drivers to install :)

Summary:
This is a decent burner. Unless you have some basic computer knowledge, don't try to install it yourself, get someone who knows what they are doing.

This is a otorite DD0401 sanyo based burner, great deal at officemax this week for $150 with $50 rebate
Being a owner of a 4x optorite DD0203 after many firmaware updates turned out to be a good burner
