I had the same error of "Power Calibration Error" with version 1.10a and nero. I use genrirc dvd-r (PRINCO).
But if I reduce write speed from 4 to 2, the probleme is corrected.
Good luck

I've had it for 3 weeks and have burned a dozen DVD+Rs, both Sony and TDK brands. I have not burned a single coaster. I've used DVD X Copy, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and Nero 6.0 , without a single problem. Purchased it at BestBuy. Very happy with it so far.

Running on Win XP.

No complaints whatsoever. A totally hassle free installation and have had not had a single problem. Primarily writing to Ritek G04 DVD-Rs. I use all freeware for making my backups: DVDDecrypter for ripping, DVDShrink for re-authoring, IMGTool for creating an .iso image file, and DVDDecrypter for burning the .iso file. Very happy.

This was my first try at a DVD writer $139 after rebates. Backed up a few movie DVDs using DVD-Cloner on Memorex +R discs (10 pack with dvd cases $17.99 Best Buy) and the TDK +R that came in the package. Works perfectly with no problems.

Bought X Copy Gold and wouldn't work. TDK support is useless. Wouldn't buy another TDK product. Called 321 Studios and they bent over backwards to help. Finally got it to work by downloading Nero 6 Demo for using UDF writing. Then TDK disk wouldn't work on home DVD player. E-mailed 321 Studios and Frank Parrish, in tech support, researched the DVD player and recommended Imation DVD-R. Worked perfect. Would also recommend product.

After I flash the firm ware to 1.09, everything works as advertised. I used the Roxio's Classic Creator(came with the burner) to burn the dvds and they all play on my DVD player from Kones 3000. So far I have used Memorex 4X DVD-R, TDK 4X DVD+r and Hypermedia 2.5X DVD+RW with no problems. I like this burner.

I bought this piece of junk at Best Buy and installed it on my computer without incident. However, after I booted up the computer, it won't recognize the drive most of the time. I burned two coasters with the DVDs supplied in the box. I'm heading out the door back to Best Buy to return this doorstop.

I've had my TDK 440N for about a month and it's worked great. The first two discs I tried burning turned into coasters but I blame the software I experimented with for that. I'm using DVD Decrypter for ripping, DVD Shrink 3.0(beta) for shrinking and Nero 5.5 for burning. I use TDK DVD+R disks for backing up my movies and FujiFilm DVD+RW media for testing. I'm very pleased with this purchase and would recommend it in a heartbeat.

People are used to brand names, yupe, some are excellent some are worthless! I paid $120 for a Nec 1300D (Dual drive + and - disc) and I've done about 10+ back up movies, couple of VHS tapes transfer to DVD without a coaster so far (using DVD X Xpress, Pinnacle Studio 8 and Nero 5.5.10) you may want to pay more for Sony etc. it' up to you! Althouhg, all of the DVD burner now DOSEN'T like cheap media! I tried to save a dollard or two by using Comp USA 1x disc, it burned like a champ but when play back time...man...it played for 2 mins then it freeze for few seconds...then the whole things repeated over and over...well, take care and good luck guys!

I bought this TDK burner about 3 weeks ago and without checking the compatibility I had ordered Meritline HQ DVD-R media (100). Now I come to know that the burner doesnt support meritline HQ media. I read in this forum that applying the firmware patch will help resolve the issue. While trying to apply the patch I am getting the following error.

RichEdit1->Lines.Strings ?????????? : RichEdit ?????????.

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

I wish I would have read the other comments about this burner first. I wouldn't have got this burner. The burner is holding true to all the other comments about it. I'm currently waiting a RA to exchange this burner with the Sony DRX510UL. I really like TDK products but this is gets “thumbs down”.

I bought the 440N and created 25 coasters in 7 days. This drive was not compatible with the major software packages and even had trouble with the Roxio package shipped with it. I bought another just to see if would act the same, and yep- it did. I'm not messing around. I have a 3 GHz system and Asus P4C800 board & 1GB of Corsair memory. I don't need hassles like this. I returned one of the drives as it was inside the 15 day window allowed by the business. I am now in a squabble with TDK to take the other drive back. I bought a Sony 510A and have had ZERO problems! Shame on you TDK. I hope yor reading skills are better than your engineering skills.

Hi All,

made expierences using the TDK device. Bought SKY DVD-R media, nero 6 says "Invallid Media", Didn't try any other media up to now, which are good useable for DVD-R Movie Backups?
DVD+R worked very good and fast, I was suprised.

At first it was ok, i had no problem burning Memorex DVD-Rs, but it started acting up after about 2 weeks. I could not burn cheap DVD-Rs, would not recognise the dvds. Did the firmware update from 1.05 to 1.08 and now everything works fine. This is a very good buy ,even with the flukes.

To correct an error in my previous post... i replaced the drive with the Sony DW-U14A which is OEM equivalent of the Sony DRU-510A (not DRU-51A that I mistakenly posted). This DUAL format (+/-) Sony drive worked great and has 4X write capability to DVD+R and DVD+RW.

I bought this unit for $199 at Circuit City and had for about two days before promptly returning. The unit had recurring "data read errors" (mainly CRC errors) when using DVD Shrink to backup several of my kids' children's DVDs since they tend to scratch them up. At first I though that the orginal DVD was scratched too bad for backup; however, 5 out of 7 had the same problem. Most of them had few if any scratches and all played fine in DVD players. I did some research on www.CDRLabs.com and their review of this drive confirms that the drive does not do well with scratched or dirty discs. I quickly returned this thing for refund and bought the Sony OEM DW-U14A drive (from www.legendmicro.com for $189) that is the OEM version of the Sony DRU-51A. It read and backed up all 7 of the same disks with DVD Shrink. Be cautious if buy this drive to backup DVD Video.

Just a comment about East's post (see below) he said that the TDK doesnt support Nero 6? well im using the latest version of Nero 6 and it works fine? I think some of the earlier versions of Nero 6 required an update that was available from the Nero site for free so why East didnt try that is beyond me?

Comments posted by Hormski from Other, September 10, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

I bought this DVD writer pureley by fluke as the store was out of stock of teh model i wanted and offerd me a discount on teh 440n.

When i first installed it, it was rejected almost all cheap media that was until i flashed the firmware, now it work fine ive only wasted one disc and that was because it was scracthed and caused and error.

I use DVD shrink to rip and shrink and Nero or Copy 2 DVD to burn. For some reason copy 2 DVD only allows me to burn at 2 speed but this isnt really a problem as i tend to lean towards Nero as it is a more comprehensive package.

I would say im very happy with the writer and would advise anyone looking at it to seriously consider buying it.
