Had this drive over twelve months now. I use clonedvd with the Anydvd patch, along with Arita 2.4x +R disks. I haven't found a DVD player that they wont play on, yet ..... Tried them in alsorts of makes list too long to mention
Excellent drive is all I can say.

My drive came as a Buslink oem ( Memeorex sells the same drive) the Videostudio software sucks, as does the neo dvd. I hvaw the Ulead DVD movie creator, dowloaded the patches, works like a champ.

Couple of small software bugs, but works great. Now I have to buy aDVD player that the disks work on.

Just picked up this drive yesterday for $36 (after rebate). Backed up a couple of my DVD's (DVD-5 & DVD-9) with no problems at all. Using DVDShrink 2 and Nero 5.5.10. For the price, I couldn't pass it up. Good jump for me into the DVD+R/RW World.

I first bought this drive in december, the drive lasted 2 weeks before it developed a fault.I took it back and got the same drive as a replacement.my replacement drive also broke down 2 days ago, this time i asked for a refund.between the the 2 drives i only burned about 30 dvds.On my past expierence i advise anybody to stay clear of this dvd writer.I purchased the dvd-r/dvd+r sony dual format drive which is much better.

Got this drive today.

Had a little trouble in knowing what i was doing at first and suddenly got a BSOD (win2k havebt seen one of those for months) was ready to give up on the drive after that one little incident.

Glad i didnt as i have now used both disks, the rw first to test a movie i had ripped onto hardrive using dvdshrink (great proggie highly recommended:) and then tried it in my crappy standalone player that plays everything, it worked! now copied it to the +r disk and still works, very happy upto yet but would have liked a little more speed.

I was going to buy the Nec 1300a +rw +r -rw -r drive but being impatient and seeing this was £50 cheaper i thought id have some of that at £160 from Dixons uk.

Hope it does as well with other brands of media then im really happy :)

9 out of 10 cause nit as fast as a 4x

Had this DVD+R/RW for about a year now and not really used it much, cost me £299..then dropped £100 about a month later (PCWORLD) grrrr. But now the media has dropped in price i cant stop using it..
Iam using datawrite DVD+R media at the mo (The Yellow And Black ones) used silver ones too... had only 1 trashed in over 50 burns... copys DVD movies in an hour and half using smartripper/DVD2ONE/Nero had no probs playing on my 3 year old sony...that apparently sould not be able to play CD/DVD writerables...nice one datawrite! Plays a tad fuzzy on my cheapo ASDA Rowa DVD but not to distraction.
I can recomend this DVD+R/RW, its slow but it very reliable. Cheers Ricoh!!

hope media drops in price again soon...same as CDR's...

I finally bought this after deciding I needed larger storage than CD-R for digital and video back ups.

I have a basic digital camcorder and got the DVD to archive my digital video. However I prefer window media video, rather than MPEG, captured on studio 7 as full quality avi, then edited with fades and clips etc. then saved as another avi, then using windows media encoder 9 (only works on xp) to create an archive file, called VBR97 (bit rate seems to vary 8000 to 15000. I crop it to widescreen, and deinterlace the video. the result is about 4.5gb per hour, larger than mpeg 2 dvd, but vastly superior in quality, zero frame rate drop out, and no simering or hazinesscompared to DVD MPEG 2. I aim to play my video back via a TFT/Plasma screen soon when they fall in price. Look up windows xp media centre pc's.they are the future.not sep DVD players. Until then I will also make MPEG 2 DVD, but keep the WMV version for long term.

VBR 75 95 97 AND 100 are the 4 options, Windows media encoder allows. (its free from microsoft). VBR 75 (5000 KBPS AVERAGE) gives 120 min per DVD, 95 (9000KBPS) gives 100min, 97 (12000KBPS) gives 60 mins and 100 (18,000KBPS) gives me about 33min opwer DVD, ASSUMING ITS CROPPED TO 1.78:1 FOR WIDESCREEN ADN ALSO DEINTERLACED. The only draw back is it takes my p4 2.4ghz, 6 times as long as real time to convert each avi to wmv. I leave it work over night. Also 2gb is the max file nero allows u to copy over to a DVD as back up.

MPEG 2 DVD in local stores at 9000kps eg nero simply aren't up to a good enough quality on a plasma screen to make a plasma screen worth the money, though on conventional TV they look good. On My Computer monitor 19" the WMV beats the MPEG 2 hands down.

My Ricoh mp 5215a-dp cost me £182 including del within 48hrs from DABS, thou I saw it yesterday at £133 as bankrupt stock supplied by one of the DVD media companies.

so far it has burned on RICOH +RW with no errors, also SVP DVD+R with no errors. The SVP discs are made by Ritek and cost £14.60 (Inc delivery)for 10 shrink wrapped from SVP.(WEB WWW.BLANKDISCSHOP.CO.UK)

My MPEG 2 and WMV video play back effortlessly,on my PC as do several 1000 digital pictures now safely backed up.

RICOH +RW DVD MPEG 2 burned on supplied nero 5.5 has played on all "new" for sale shop DVD PLAYERS I have tried. It doesn't play on 2-3 yr old ones eg my old Tosh 2109.. but then for £99 richer sounds sells brand new ones.

The software supplied is basic, eg the video editing is poor compared to studio 7. The NERO 5.5 burner is good though I prefer the ulead dvd free trial I have for menus and front screen designs.

This DVD burner seems excellent value for money. My advice is play around with a single DVD+RW until you are sure what you are doing.

Brilliant! Had a problem with Nero, so used CopytoDVD instead to burn my DVD's. Works every time. No longer trial copy to RW first.

Comments posted by MALLET from Other, April 01, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Absolute brilliance !

To the guy who last posted, i use Datawrite DVD+R's (the cheapest i can find anywhere) and they work 1st time every time.

I rip with Smartripper
I compress with DVD2one
I write with Nero 5.5

I don't even bother with DVD RW's because i know it will write first time everytime.

E-mail me if you have any problems after trying the above.

Bought this drive from PC-World and found it to be a good reliable drive so far. Only written DVD+RWs and cdrs. The DVD+RW play fine in my old Pioneer DV-515.

This is a great burner. I've burnt over 30 DVD+R (Verbatim) movies without a hitch on my Mac Dual 800 G4, OS X 10.2.3 using Roxio Toast 5.2. The disks played flawlessly on 2 standalone Panasonic, and a Sony DVD player.

The only issue is the Superdrives (Pioneer 104's) in the newer Macs can't read the DVD+R media.

This is just the most amazing drive I've seen... :) Ignore the bundled software. Would you pay another $50 to get something else? I wouldn't, since I already have great softies.

Picked one up yesterday at the Dixons in Uxbridge, and must say have been very impressed with the results. The JustLink really does live up to its name (didn't drop out when used in a laptop docking station, which wouldn't burn CD's reliably at 8 speed!). Took about 28Mins to write the disk (I think there's a bug in Nero 5.5.10, as it reckoned the disk was 240% complete when it finally spat it out :) ).
DVD+RW's worked without issue in my PS2, and on an old DVD player I keep kicking around for novelty value. Definitely worth the £199 they're asking for it!

but the rebadged memorex justlink model from E-bay for $225, didnt install any of the software, using dvdx copy and nero, this thing is the bomb, between x copy and nero it takes 45min to copy/burn double if the dvd needs 2 blanks, still not bad. have not used the cd burning cause i got a 24x liteon for that, this thing has made great palyable dvds from verbatim, memorex and ricoh, dvd +r and +rw,
havent flashed it yet and not sure i will. highly reccomend it after about 2 mos i cant find a flaw.

Bought from PC world for £199, usaully I avoid the Dixon's group but this price is fair (at least, at the moment it is).
Had no problems installing in a dell 4100, everything worked first time. I use Premiere 6.02, along with a DV500 card. For DV authoring, after much playing around with various demo's, I decided on ULEAD DVDWorkshop, this seemed to offer a good set of features at a reasonable cost. Didn't bother with the included software, but this may be OK for people with basic requirements.
Only Issues I have had have been with DVDWS, boy this is buggy! Had to upgrade from ME to WIN2K to get it to work at all. Have played with creating MPG2 using DV500/Pemiere and importing resulting mp2+wav files onto DVDWS, as well as using DVDWS inbuilt encoder on "raw" avi files. I can't see any difference in quality thus far.
I create a DVD folder first then use Nero to burn, mainly so I can easily make additional copies.
Have burnt DVD+R from Datawrite and DVD+RW's from Ricoh and imation. No problems at all playing in Toshiba 220 or Pioneer 626D. Menu's don't work on my rather old PC Samsung DVD rom drive.
Pretty good drive all in all, works as advertised. All I need now is for PCworld/Dixons to sell media at a reasonable price. Oh, and that new Canon DV GL2 camera would be nice too . :-)

I have this burner flashed with hacked Firmware Version 1.51.
Regionfree. No problems yet.

Bought this recorder before xmas 2002 from Dixons for £200 (other PC shops are STILL selling for around £270!!).
What a great piece of equipment.
I've used Philips DVD+RW that I bought with the Ricoh from Dixons (5 for £35, which I believe are now down to £30).
Bought Datawrite +R's, which seemed to be ok, but I'm now using Traxdata +R's, and they're excellent.
By the way, these are playing back in my 'old' Sony DVP-S715 which is almost 4 years old, flawlessly!
Keep up the good work Ricoh!

I have not had any problems with this drive.

It will copy/write all I throw at it and I'm only using a PIII450.

I would highly recommend this to anyone and the price is so cheap..

Comments posted by RayZorb from Other, January 08, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

I'm quite satisfied, works flawless. I have tried all available DVD+R and DVD+RW brands without any problem.

It also writes 870Mb (99min.) CD-Rs (‘Melody’) flawlessly.

I haven’t tried to re-flash the firmware to make it multi-region though. I use an Asus DVD reader, which has RPS-2, but can be reset physically.

Definitely worth the money. I’d give it 10 if the region setting could be reset like on the famous Asus DVD players.
