Great burner. Even better when you upgrade the firmware to make it a 4551 and enable DVD-RAM and labelflash.

Highly rated from SharkyExtreme.com
Never bought an NEC anything. I am happy with the burns and the speed it burns discs at. Not a single misburn in over 7 months.
Now if I could only find a black faceplate....

Works with Memorex dvd-r 16x and Memorex dvd-/+ 8x.

I recommend upgrading to the "Liggy's ND3550 Bitsetting Firmware 1.06" from http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3550/ You will also need to download binflash to actually install the firmware. You can get it at:
http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/disclaimer/1/5
Just extract binflash and the firmware file to a temporary folder, then run binflash (preferably in Safe Mode, or, at least, turn off your Anti-Virus and close down all other programs running). Then just upload the Liggy's firmware and shut down your computer when binflash is done. When you restart, your drive will bitset and recognize all kinds of new discs.

Excellent drive, by the way.

Superb writer . Quite, fast. Superb burns. No coasters. I use AnyDvd & Clonedvd2. Far and away the best media is Verbatim 8X+ burnt at 4X. Nero qulity scans of 95-97.

I use RitekG05 media, and dvd decrypter does not burn at the selected 8x, but burns at 4x (even gives a notice). Nero also does not burn at 8x. What am I doing wrong?

Have yet to try different media...

Great writer! Loves DVD+R DVD's. Does well with TDK 16X, Philips 16x(CMC)and Fuji 8x(TY). Zero coasters. Quiet and fast loading. 16X burns in 7 minutes.

So far, so good. It's a good, solid burner. I have burned about 200 discs so far with no problems, other than RitekG05, which I'll get to in a minute. I gave it a 9 because of the G05 problem and that it apparently lacks bitsetting. Other than its excellent reliability, it loads/unloads discs much faster than my LG-4163B. For somebody who needs to do a lot of disc-changing, like me, this is a SWEET feature!

On to the RitekG05 blank media problem: It definitely does not like RitekG05, which my other burners have no problem with. I have burned hundreds of G05s with other burners with very few coasters and, so far, the media has held up. On the one hand, G05 is widely considered to be of questionable quality; on the other hand, it's very common store-brand media sold under a variety of names, including sometimes Memorex. However, with the NEC ND-3550a, not only do failures occur, but you will not even get any reliable indication that burns to RitekG05 have failed; you have to find out whether or not it failed by verifying each file yourself. Do not rely on the "Verify Files" option in your burning software; use DOS' FC.EXE (file compare.) Often, your burner software will tell you that file verification fail, but FC shows no errors - or vice versa.
In short, this is a top-notch burner, as long as you can be sure you avoid RitekG05 i.e. cheap media.

I bought 3 of these drives to do multi burns all, of them perform good. I have notice when reading some DVD movies with Alcohol 120 when making copies, I would get a read error. When I select the ignor error box in Alcohol 120 everything seems to work out ok I did not see this problem often with my LG burner I removed. Bought all 3 of them under $35 each including shipping.

Great £28UKP burner, far outperforms my previous Sony/LiteOn £60UKP burner. Bought OEM so no software bundled with it but for the price I'm more than happy. Incredible read speeds on clean discs but only problem is it can be a bit iffy when reading scratched discs my other writer can read no problems.

Excellent burner....but dont use Memorex 16xDVD-R - the drive outputs incompatible media. Memorex 16xDVD+R works fine though.

Great burner! Fast, quiet, gives great quality burns. I got it at Fry's for US$60, came with Nero Suite v6.3, I think, I updated it to v6.6 now. I doesn't look fancy and doesn't have phones jack but I don't care for those. I still have a 1300A drive that ... still works great too, only in my old PC thou. I think some ppl may have probs with their drives over time due to smoking in the area where PC is as it DOES fog up drive's lens. The only reason I give it 9pts, it has no DVD-RAM support.

Installed 02-21-'06 in my Dell E510. This burner is faster than my LG GWA4164B and performs flawlessly with Fuji 4x & 8x, Maxell 8x & 2x, Verbatim 16x, plus Imation, Sony, Optodisc, and TDK 4.7g plus and minus discs as well as TDK +RW and Ritek -RW. Actually burns the TDK +R 4x at 8.08x peak speed. Does not like Ridata plus or minus DL (neither does my LG GWA4164B), but burns the Verbatim +R DL perfectly (so far, 13 for 13). Arrived with jumper in cable-select mode, but works better (much faster) in my Dell as slave with the LG as master. Unit is quiet and represents a remarkable buy at $38.00 + s&h. (Newegg).

Made Dec 2005 in Taiwan. Firmware 1.05. PIE spike of 202, quality score of 0 in Nero w/ MCC 004 burned at both 12x & 16x, scanned with both the Nec and my old BenQ, returning today :( Just reinstalled my old BenQ 1620 and scored a 96 with PIE at 6 :)

Bottom line, best writer on the market. I had a batch of 500 dvds that I had bought that were freezing when played in stand alone after being burned on a diffrent lg brand writer. Got this and next 100 I burned with it worked perfectly. It is not always about the quality of disks. The writer plays an equally important part. This is the upgrade from the NEC 3520 which is the highest rated write on videohelp. Pretty much the same unit if not for updated drivers. Look no further if you want the fastest best writer on the market

I use Verbatims 8X DVD+r's and burn at 12X. I consistently score 97s on CD/DVD Speed. I upgraded my firmware to Liggy and Dees 1Y5. I burn nothing but DVD+r as DVD-roms. I have yet to find a dvd player that will not play the discs. A great value at any price if you want quality. The only downfall is that it won't measure jitter.

Comments posted by GDack from Canada, February 19, 2006. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

For the money, I don't think you could ask for a better product than this burner. I've had no coasters. The thing is fast, more than quiet enough for me, and very reliable so far. It's also a good reader, getting data from disks even my best previous drive couldn't get. This drive definitely deserves to be in the top ten burners available.

Comments posted by dostatochno from United States, February 12, 2006. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Bought this for a friend of mine and had a chance to run some tests on it before I sent it away to him. It worked great, CD read test under Nero actually surpassed the 48X it has posted (not by much), a 16X Memorex DVD+R full disk took just under 7 Min (not bad). I will be replacing my old LG drive with this one soon. A very solid drive for a great price $52 CAN.

I just got this burner a few days ago and it rocks!!! I have been burned DVD-Rs and DVD+R DL successfully. Not only that, but I have been burning these at Maximum speed.

I have the burner mastered on the top of the secondary IDE bus and a DVD-ROM slaved under it. Absolutely excellent burner!!!

I've been a fan of NEC since the days of the 2500. This unit does not disappoint. I've used two spindles (100 discs) of Linkyo 8x Hub Printable (MCC) for full disc burns using Nero Recode (latest and greatest version 7.xx). It burns the Linkyo at 16x. I've also used 8x and 16x Ridata with no problem. All of the above are -R media.

I've used 2x and 4x -rw (Sony, Verbatim, Memorex) and Memorex 2.4 and 4x +RW (two different media codes each speed).

No coasters so far and I check each disc doing an "image copy" on a Toshiba 516 DVDROM in an emachines T2895. Every disc was good with on errors.

I can't say enough good things about the NEC drives.
